Sofa regret - help me style

Recently replaced a 25 year old sofa. Spent ages looking at different options. Decided on a Cotswold company sofa. I love the design but feel like I’ve made an huge error with the colour. I really wanted a green but when I visited the showroom with my friend she thought the green looked too dark. Suggested a teal colour which I liked but now really wished I had stuck to my original moss green colour. It feels too blue in the room and every time I look at it I feel shocked how blue it looks. So disappointed at myself as it was such a big decision. Everywhere I look there are lovely green sofas. I have attached a photo - any tips on how to look less blue!

The red in the pillows isn't helping. Pinks or burnt orange would work far better, or you could try some greens too.

Do some image searches for teak sofas to see how they are styled and try to replicate something you like

i really don't agree at all with this- the brick red in the cushions looks fab..sofa is more a blue-grey than teal

TeaRoseTallulah · 02/11/2025 14:01

Remove the cushions as the reds in it will make the blue look stronger.

You could try a green throw over the arm , it's not what I would class as teal so if the colour in the photo is true it should work.

We all have different tastes. The cushion looks dated to me. Like my mums style when I was growing up I guess. Red is a very bold colour choice in any room

Princessfluffy · 02/11/2025 14:04

I would paint your walls in a terracotta colour OP then everyone will be jealous of your gorgeous new living room

AGreenWitch · 02/11/2025 14:05

I'd look for a throw that allows you to introduce all the colours you want to see. Sort of like this but less blue and more of the other colours you want to introduce. link

If you add a throw with the right mix you can then introduce whatever you want colour wise, the throw will join it up.

I think the colour looks ok btw, I know it is hard when you have something in you mind and you don't get it, but you can do a lot with it.

Yes it does to me too, it's giving ikea vibes from when I was a teen.

Windywalks · 02/11/2025 14:06

Try and return it or sell it for the green one

🤣

Whatever the colour choice, it should be muted/dusky rather than bold or bright (unless OP has maximalist taste - then bright colours could look fab)

I think red and teal look great together but that sofa - from the photo - isn't teal. I'd put the sofa into chatgpt and ask it to show potential colour schemes for your room.

Pepperedpickles · 02/11/2025 14:23

I find it so interesting how different we all are. That’s why - too late now- but you should never ask for opinions on home stuff. Just go with whatever makes you happy. Personally I much prefer the green and I’m sitting here absolutely 😳 at the suggestion of painting the walls terracotta to go with the blue sofa. No thanks. But each to their own!

Hermyknee · 02/11/2025 14:24

Paint the wall behind the sofa the colour of the sofa you liked. Or the same green as in the cushions.

I also much prefer the blue to the green. I agree with your friend. It’s a lovely sofa op

I'm the opposite, much prefer the green.

I would do that. I find if I don't like something initially, I'll never grow to love it and it's best to get rid of it than try to make it work.

Loobyloo68 · 02/11/2025 14:53

I have teal sofas that are more blue than green, I painted the chimney wall dark green and got dark green curtains. It looks really cosy

I think that moss green sounds nice but the pic Op posted just doesn't match up to it for me!

I agree.

It has a similar tone to mine. My living room is cream and green blue tones

Thanks so much everyone . Some really useful advice. I have definitely learnt my lesson about going with my gut feeling. Unfortunately returning isn’t an option as made to order. I think I would loose too much money too if I sold it. I think I will try adding some dusky pink cushions to see if it looks better. Cotswold company do sell some that I think would work.

the colour you have bought is much nicer than the second photo you posted. That doesn’t look “mossy green” but more like a bland sage-type colour.

If you put green cushions on the teal sofa it will make it look more blue and less green. You need to add dark red/ rust/ dark pink colours to make the greenness in the teal shine out more (using the opposite colours to green to create the contrast to make the green of the shade more prominent).

If you don’t like such colours then some navy blue cushions or even a brighter blue would again make the greenness of the teal as opposed to its blueish tone stand out more.

This is also very interesting in terms of how different people perceive green vs. blue and where the boundary lies:

https://ismy.blue/

I find this fascinating. In some ancient languages there was no word for green at all and people called trees blue, or vice versa and the sky and sea were allegedly green.

MarbleHunt · 02/11/2025 15:47

For me, anything with some yellow in is by definition a shade of green, not blue. But others seem to draw the line somewhat differently on average according to this test.

Teal is a type of green, it’s just less-yellowy green!

Controversial, but if you like green you could paint the walls green, then the cushion ties the walls and sofa together. I love a green room, looks much cosier than cream.

This is so interesting! Shows why me and my husband don't agree on blue! Although I'm assuming he's the one in the wrong here since I'm in the middle 🤣 I'll be sure to tell him

It's a painful lesson, but I'm adding my vote to preferring the sofa you have. The one you wanted, and I'm sorry you didn't get what you wanted, isn't green but more greige.

Cosyblackcatonbed · 02/11/2025 16:05

I really like the colour, I don't like the cushion though. I would go for a cushion without any blue it in and less busy, perhaps picking up other colours you have in the room.
