Sofa regret - help me style

Recently replaced a 25 year old sofa. Spent ages looking at different options. Decided on a Cotswold company sofa. I love the design but feel like I’ve made an huge error with the colour. I really wanted a green but when I visited the showroom with my friend she thought the green looked too dark. Suggested a teal colour which I liked but now really wished I had stuck to my original moss green colour. It feels too blue in the room and every time I look at it I feel shocked how blue it looks. So disappointed at myself as it was such a big decision. Everywhere I look there are lovely green sofas. I have attached a photo - any tips on how to look less blue!

this is why I don’t discuss home furnishing purchases with any one else, including my husband because I end up compromising and then feel disappointed with the purchase

That said, It looks lovely and comfortable, but definitely looks blue rather than green or teal.

do you have green cushions that might help make the green tones come out more?

Forgottenidentity · 02/11/2025 13:13

Thanks @SheepShankers. We are very happy with comfort and design but yes definitely wished I had stuck to my original choice. My friend said my choice looked like a snooker table 😞. Here is the colour I would have chosen. I will try adding some green cushions

I think you’ll have to layer it with moss green and ochre/mustard throws and cushions. Different textures so mohair style, open knit, velvet, boucle etc. Maybe a patterned rug. Do you like William Morris? Habitat at Argos have some lovely textiles at the moment that incorporate those colours along with your teal. (Assume colours in photo are accurate and it’s a smokey teal?)

uberalice · 02/11/2025 13:16

Much prefer the teal. It's gorgeous and a very versatile colour. You could try adding some green cushions or other accessories.

Wanttobeanonhere88 · 02/11/2025 13:19

I also much prefer the blue to the green. I agree with your friend. It’s a lovely sofa op

Offcom · 02/11/2025 13:21

It won’t help during the daytime but if you don’t already have yellow lightbulbs (rather than white), that might make it look a bit more green after dark.

Think the colour is great myself, and the cushion in the photo works really well. But totally get the disappointment in a purchase you’re going to have for ages.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/11/2025 13:21

I think the one you’ve got is lively! I’ve got a dark blue sofa and it’s covered in opulent printed velvet cushions in blue green and yellow. What other colour have you got in the room?

Here is my choice

I much prefer your blue sofa to this colour sofa.

Arrrrrrragghhh · 02/11/2025 13:29

I love your green one ( nothing like a snooker table) although your blue one looks fine. It’s not offensive but it is dull.
It’s quite cold and grey so I would go strong oranges. Quirky styles.
I think it will work brilliantly in both summer and winter too.

If you can’t return the sofa you’ll just have to reframe your thinking. The only thing about the green is that it could look a bit “elderly persons home” if not styled well. That green velour look.

Homegrownberries · 02/11/2025 13:33

I love the one you've bought. I think that the issue is less to do with it looking too blue in the room and more to do with it not being the idea you had in your head. Adding green accessories won't help. It'll make the blue stand out more. I think you'll need to lean into the blue so it looks like a deliberate decision. How about this throw from Laura Ashley?

No advice but I much prefer the one you’ve got

The red in the pillows isn't helping. Pinks or burnt orange would work far better, or you could try some greens too.

Do some image searches for teak sofas to see how they are styled and try to replicate something you like

diddl · 02/11/2025 13:43

From the pic posted I much prefer what you have.

The green looks very nondescript!

That said I always think of teal as a bold colour & what you have just looks blue!

I like the cushion on it especially the dark red!

Nourishinghandcream · 02/11/2025 13:45

I know it is just a photo but yours looks almost grey rather than blue (on my screen anyhow).☹️
As PP's have suggested, do what you can with cushions and/or a throw to help you welcome it as unless you are willing to replace or recover it, you are stuck.

When we bought our sofa & chairs a couple of years ago (a huge, corner set) we went bold and went for a dark crimson/ burnt orange. People were surprised when we said what we had ordered and even my OH was beginning to doubt our decision but the reality is that we LOVE it and it is so warm & inviting. Being a bold colour, we have just added some plain cushions whereas in the past we have used cushions to ADD colour.

The morel of the story is, go with YOUR gut feeling rather than the opinion of others or what the current trend happens to be.
You are the one living with it after all.

Whatabouterytoutery · 02/11/2025 13:46

The sofa is lovely but it does not go well with the walls or carpet. I much rather the blue colour but I’d definitely change the wall colour at least and I think it will be absolutely gorgeous.

rumred · 02/11/2025 13:46

You've got buyer's remorse. Most of us suffer from it. Also you're adjusting to something that's new after 25 years of the same.
Give it time.

monty2020 · 02/11/2025 13:51

Dark green throw and cushions in dark navy, emerald green and mustard velvet preferably for winter. The cushion is making the sofa old fashioned looking. Here’s also some ideas https://covermycushion.com/pages/cushion-ideas-for-blue-sofa

lalalapland · 02/11/2025 13:51

Agreed. I think teal and pink work lovely together. Red and teal/blue isn't a good combination.

I would have gone green over blue too. However the blue is really nice too. Cover it with cushions, throws etc and you’ll be grand, it’s done now.

Sidebeforeself · 02/11/2025 13:56

That’s not teal though . I really like it and Im sure you’ll quickly get used to it. I would add green cushions, rug , lampshades so the blue is “framed” by the colour you want.

@lalalapland I always think teal and pink gives off 80s Miami vibes ( Golden Girls for those of us old enough to remember!)

Luciansmum6 · 02/11/2025 13:57

You could change the wall colour? I remember when I had creamy magnolia type walls and I was redecorating with a duck egg blue when I first rolllered the paint on next to the cream it looked horrible! I was shocked at what a huge difference it made. When luckily I persevered it turned out lovely. I think the blue is nicer than green

lemonraspberry · 02/11/2025 13:58

The sofa is lovely but maybe looks more blue now as the cushion has quite a few blue bits in it. Add green, orange and maybe a reddish cushions (opposite side of the colour wheel) and it should look really nice.

Luke all styles, it comes back around! Burnt orange or mustard are options. The red is giving a dated 90s vibe.
