I'm really keen to have the ceiling in our (large) spare room painted chocolate brown. A nice, warm brown. The walls are taupe. I'm going for a warm, cozy vibe. So far I haven't found the perfect chocolate brown.

So I'm hoping someone here has a (chocolate) brown ceiling and won't mind sharing a picture. Thank you!

So I have giggled at some responses but @SweetAlmondOil - have a look at F&B Charleston Grey IT IS NOT GREY in any normal sense of grey ) - it is a sort of warm soothing mid brown colour but no orange / red tones. - definitely less dark than chocolate brown but dark enough to be definite. Also does not look like 20 years of nicotine.

Oh I do admire your style & thank you other posters for a giggle - I have never seen a suggested colour scheme described as monstrous before.
but I am glad I have

@SweetAlmondOIl - I think I see where are going and do have a peek at Charleston grey - seriously I do not think anyone would call it grey it is definitely a brown. Otherwise F&B Tanner's Brown is very very definitely a very dark brown but again without the Cafe Rouge faux nicotine styling.

Best of luck & do let us see the ceiling once done

OK. I shall go to the local paint shop and get a few samples. I will then post pictures here for voting. How's that? :-D

Love it, in the right room.

There you go. Not that mad, am I?

I for one look forward to seeing your choices and voting, too!
I agree brown can be tricky but I will not succumb to irrational hatred for the colour of chocolate, tree bark, autumn leaves. Crack on SweetAlmondOil.

Beautiful brown things. That's a brown fish owl. He's feeling very hurt and insulted. Grin

Oh but - how much nicer does the blue bathroom ceiling look that the brown ones... imo of course.

I shall look out for picture updates OP!

SweetAlmondOil · 14/10/2020 12:54

I'll be going to the paint shop next week. Then I'll post pictures of swatches. Once we've voted on the swatches I'll paint swatches of the shortlisted colours on the ceiling and post pictures of those. Heck knows what colour the ceiling will end up!!!! :-D

More important to decide whether you are going matt or silk thinking about it.you would need immaculate ceilings to get away with silk i think

SweetAlmondOil · 14/10/2020 14:35

matt. Definitely matt.

I have a red ceiling in our dining room it only works because it's 3.5m tall, a really big room, the ornate coving and ceiling rose is brilliant white and the walls are a very warm smoky grey. It also has a huge bay window bringing lots of light. It's warm and cosy as well as dramatic but the same colours would look awful in a smaller or darker room.
Dark ceilings can be tricky to pull off.

wonkylegs · 14/10/2020 14:42

It's a very dull grey day here today so about the worst kind light for pictures but here it is

@MillieEpple

I cant imagine a brown ceiling I like the idea of nice rich colour though have you got a picture of the wall colour. I can't really place taupe
Here it is. The sun's on the other side of the house (it's actually overcast atm) but here is our taupe wall colour.

It is less Mole than expected.

Which brand is it? Their websites often suggest colours that go well. The charlston grey sounds good from F&B. Dulux suggests dusted damson as a nice tsupe combo.

BasiliskStare · 14/10/2020 17:41

Yes I am with @MilleEpple - I think Charleston Grey - dark but not chocolate would look good - it's a forgiving colour in that I cannot think of much it would not go with.

Bluntness100 · 14/10/2020 17:46

Some dark painted ceilings can look great, dark red, dark blue, dark green, if it’s the sort of period property to take it.

Chocolate brown though is a very niche taste and personally I’d not do that,

CountFosco · 14/10/2020 17:49

@wonkylegs That's very similar to PILs red ceiling, love your grey walls with it. It looks fab in the right room.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/10/2020 19:39

@CountFosco

We have a mustard ceiling with lighter walls in our sitting room (previous owners choice) and I hate it with a passion. Yellow is my least favourite colour though, makes me look ill.
Mustard should only ever be used sparingly as a condiment, not a main course.Grin
RogueV · 14/10/2020 19:40

I’m not feeling it op

pallisers · 14/10/2020 19:44

both my dds' rooms have painted ceilings. dd1 has a deep navyblue ceiling with lighter blue walls and dd2's is a not very deep purple/violet with a paler shade on the walls. We have high ceilings and white trim. they look great.

I couldn't go for brown though (mind you I wouldn't go for taupe either - not my thing)

Lolaloveslemonade · 14/10/2020 19:45

Not nice OP

I think you could get the cosy/dramatic mood without the fecal ceiling if you took the taupe wall colour onto the woodwork – paint your skirting, architrave and door taupe too. If you’re feeling it, do the ceiling and coving taupe too though I quite like some previous suggestions like aubergine – but you definitely need to commit and do ceiling and coving dark, woodwork wall colour. Otherwise with all the white bits it’ll look a bit bitty and half-hearted.

Or what about a GOLD LEAF ceiling?

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 14/10/2020 20:23

@CountFosco

Someone above mentioned the Mad about the House blog, her sitting room is dark brown and it doesn't look poo like at all.
That's the best review of a decorating scheme I've ever read Grin
CountFosco · 14/10/2020 20:56

LOL. I was getting annoyed at all the comments about anything brown looking like poo. I never look at brown things and think oh that looks a bit poo like. Just be careful with any pine room perfumes OP, you don't want eau de toilette Wink

Anyway, Mad about the House woman actually has a gold ceiling in her office so you could check that out on the blog.

BasiliskStare · 14/10/2020 21:14

I love this thread - I have relatively low veiling so would not work but I can see how a dramatic ceiling could work though I agree with @Lolaloveslemonade that colour isn't a great look. As @ErrolTheDragon says by and large mustard is a (lovely) condiment - not so much a ceiling colour. I do like @chickenyhead 's brown painted photographs - I am suddenly a convert. Grin

BasiliskStare · 14/10/2020 21:16

ceilings not veiling - that would be a different thing - wafting through my house with a low slung chocolate brown veil
