Show me your brown ceilings

I'm really keen to have the ceiling in our (large) spare room painted chocolate brown. A nice, warm brown. The walls are taupe. I'm going for a warm, cozy vibe. So far I haven't found the perfect chocolate brown.

So I'm hoping someone here has a (chocolate) brown ceiling and won't mind sharing a picture. Thank you!

I cant imagine a brown ceiling
I like the idea of nice rich colour though
have you got a picture of the wall colour. I can't really place taupe

nancybotwinbloom · 12/10/2020 17:17

Op I like that picture you posted it did look homely but I'm not brave enough for that and my house isn't big enough

It's not a well defined colour. According to Wikipedia 'The name originally referred only to the average color of the French mole' .... I think most people mean something a lot lighter than any mole I've ever seen.Confused

Here's some taupes...

Dusky blue: farrow and ball

Could you do a pink if you really want something warm? Possibly F&B calamine? Or a sage green?

IveNameChangedAgain2020 · 12/10/2020 22:05

Hi OP. I love this thread. You are SO going to paint your ceiling brown. I would never in 1000 years but if it doesn't work out you can always paint over it?! Just get it out of your system and just do it Grin

SwimmingOnEggshells · 12/10/2020 22:30

I'm laughing out loud at some of the replies on this!

But in all seriousness, I would go with an aubergine or a wine colour. They'll be just as warm as a brown and less... fecal looking :)

CountFosco · 13/10/2020 07:30

Someone above mentioned the Mad about the House blog, her sitting room is dark brown and it doesn't look poo like at all.

ageingdisgracefully · 13/10/2020 07:36

I'd also go for a dark aubergine rather than brown. I think brown is hard to get right in any scenario let alone on s ceiling where it's going to be harder to paint over.

There's a colour by F and B called Paean Black - a very dark aubergine. Cosier than brown and less "dirty protest".

PurplePansy05 · 13/10/2020 07:39

I think that's a terrible idea, sorry.

It would forever look as if it was recently plastered/damp/stained. Not to mention the room would look v dark as a result.

user1493494961 · 13/10/2020 08:03

We had a yellow ceiling in the 70s, it made the room look all sunny, but it was of its time (it perfectly matched our 70s wallpaper and carpet!).

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2020 09:49

Some shades of yellow might work in some situations though probably not with taupe. I'm still delighted to know it's the French word for 'mole' but it's making me imagine the OPs walls covered in quite dark dull brown flock.Grin

VanillaSpiceCandle · 13/10/2020 10:33

I think the idea is great - it’s just the colour. I think any other colour would look better than brown apart from maybe a dark grey. Can you pick out the underlying tones in the walls and choose something else? But then again it’ll be totally unique and you can always just repaint over it if you change your mind. That wasn’t very helpful, sorry!

PragmaticWench · 13/10/2020 14:33

What about a mustard/gold ceiling, so a warm colour, and lighter walls?

SweetAlmondOil · 13/10/2020 15:50

I'm not sure. Would mustard, or aubergine say 'chalet/wooden lodge'?

OP posts:
Alternista · 13/10/2020 16:13

I don’t think a painted brown ceiling says “wooden chalet”, I think it says “there’s a terrible stain up there we couldn’t get rid of” Grin

But, who are we to say?! If it makes you happy, go for it :)

MillieEpple · 13/10/2020 16:43

You could wood clad it - sauna style

SweetAlmondOil · 13/10/2020 16:54

The wall behind the bed already has wooden-clad wallpaper that looks like 'rough' wood (lovely I promise. Anyone who's seen it thinks it's real wood - the key is in the paper not being shiny and having some texture).

A magnolia (yeuch) ceiling (in a house of average height ceilings) REALLY pulls the ceiling down. I had this in my own house and painted the ceiling matt white, in order to raise it. I mention it because I discovered that you don't need to go that dark to visually lower a ceiling.

EmilySpinach · 13/10/2020 19:25

I understand the thinking but brown is awful. Maybe F&B Brinjal.

AfterSchoolWorry · 13/10/2020 19:26

Has anyone mentioned 'dirty protest' yet?

CountFosco · 13/10/2020 23:01

We have a mustard ceiling with lighter walls in our sitting room (previous owners choice) and I hate it with a passion. Yellow is my least favourite colour though, makes me look ill.

PickAChew · 13/10/2020 23:06

Wouldn't it just look like you're a really heavy smoker?

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 13/10/2020 23:19

My childhood home, when we moved in in the early 80s, had dark brown on at least one wall in every single room. It was awful - brown is a colour to be used sparingly, and preferably only the natural colour of actual wood. Brown paint is not nice to live with.

I did know someone who painted their basement hallway, including the ceiling, navy blue, and it was surprisingly marvellous.
