Show me your brown ceilings

I'm really keen to have the ceiling in our (large) spare room painted chocolate brown. A nice, warm brown. The walls are taupe. I'm going for a warm, cozy vibe. So far I haven't found the perfect chocolate brown.

So I'm hoping someone here has a (chocolate) brown ceiling and won't mind sharing a picture. Thank you!

OK. Thank you guys. I think I'll need to rethink that. Maybe I'll get a few paint samples in varying shades of taupe and try that. I'm keen to have a 'warm' ceiling and one that's darker than the walls. But whereas I'm quite good at visualising the end result, this would be a big change, I've never had dark ceilings, hence my post. I will try a few lighter shades and see what works. Thank you :-)

My ILs have dark ceilings in all their rooms. It's a period property with very large rooms and the ceilings are about 15' high. The walls are all light colours that tone with the ceiling (so e.g. they have a dark green ceiling in the sitting room and very light green walls) and it looks fab.

We actually have a navy ceiling in our downstairs bathroom, it tones with the wallpaper but there is a south facing velux roof window and pale tiled floor so the room doesn't feel dark. It feels much more considered than a PBW ceiling would in the same room and I adore it.

OP I think it sounds like it could be fab. I've found a few on google and they look fab. And far more stylish than a bloody feature wall. And what's the worst that can happen? You need to paint over it.

The big things will be are you going to make everything dark and snug or are you going for a contrast with lighter walls (a very light pink might be nice) and furniture and floor. And I think you have to be bold and really go for it whichever of those choices you go for.

The floor is cream carpet. The walls are taupe. On one wall opposite the large windows there is a run of IKEA Pax mirrored wardrobes (about 3 metres worth of) that reflects the light. So the room is very bright. Hence why I think it could take a dark ceiling.

I've got a dark red ceiling. Want pics?

Dollywood · 12/10/2020 15:16

How about a dark plum or aubergine?

SweetAlmondOil · 12/10/2020 15:18

Gosh yes please! Because never in a million years would I have thought about red but it would go really well with the taupe. Thank you!

@SweetAlmondOil

Can I stomp my feet because everyone things it's a crappy idea???? I know it's unusual but it's a very large room, and the ceiling is quite high. I'm trying to achieve something similar to this picture - don't you think it's lovely and cosy?
This looks like sitting inside a very expensive cardboard box 🤷‍♀️
SweetAlmondOil · 12/10/2020 15:18

@Dollywood I was planning on using a warm colour. I love the ones you suggested but wouldn't they give the room a cold vibe?

Have a look at the Madaboutthehouse blog - she loves a coloured ceiling. Not sure any of hers are brown tho.

sarahc336 · 12/10/2020 15:20

I think I know what your trying to achieve but in reality I think it'll make the room look more dark rather than warm and cosy. Better off having brown on the walls with a white ceiling I think op x

Oblomov20 · 12/10/2020 15:21

No. Just no. Other dark colours might work, that grey was nice. But brown is fucking vile.

cataline · 12/10/2020 15:22

Dark ceilings can be great but chocolate brown is a colour that should never be used as a paint choice!

There are so many other lovely choices out there.

Maybe take a look on Instagram or Pinterest?

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 12/10/2020 15:24

Step away from that idea, OP, it will look like a dirty protest from the Maze Prison in the 70s.

giletrouge · 12/10/2020 15:28

Here. Not brilliant pics and prob not your style (not style of house I mean) but I love it - I love strong colours and fashions be dammed!

@giletrouge Thank you very much for sharing those pictures. It looks quite orangey in the images. Is it that shade IRL? Or a cooler red? I love the idea of a dark cherry red, although I wonder if that would make it look like a pub...

No it's the lights making it look orange. I'll try and get a better shot, hang on.

That's a gorgeous red! I'll definitely add that to my list of swatches. Thank you @giletrouge

I had a student flat with an orange ceiling, partly sloped. I learned how to paint, and even that undercoat was a thing, to avoid needing too many coats of my chosen colour ('Apple white' iirc, suited the room much better). No idea if the previous occupant had thought 'warm and cosy' or if they were just odd. Still not as bad as drab browns.

PegasusReturns · 12/10/2020 16:03

Hague blue or railings might work (not if you have beams though IMO) if you’ve very high ceilings and some ornate plaster work to offset.

Brown should be avoided at all costs.

Legoandloldolls · 12/10/2020 16:06

I like the copper, gold tone in the Victorian high ceiling room pic.

giletrouge · 12/10/2020 16:07

I can't remember what it was (anyway it was years ago) but I've just had a quick look round and I think this is close. Glad you like it!

Dark ceilings are depressing and oppressive IMO.

Sorry

SweetAlmondOil · 12/10/2020 16:13

@PegasusReturns I like both but I really want a warm colour...

@giletrouge thank you :-)

Everyone: imagine warm, cosy log cabin. That's the look and feel I'm after. Greys or blues won't really work...
