What does my bedroom need to be less bla?

Recently painted our bedroom, I live the colour, it's just the right balance between colourful and calming IMO, but somehow it seems a little flat.

I'm not sure what the room needs, maybe some plants? An accent colour? A statement or two somewhere? All ideas gratefully received.

That's lovely @mummmy2017 I really like the wooden lampshade, definitely some ideas to copy from that

And really nice wardrobe @tattiepants, I totally get the idea now. OK, will look into that too! I think we still have some paint left. It's just a cheap Wickes one btw, Bluebird I think

I know mustards, burnt orange etc are fashionable, but if you don’t fancy those colours how about royal purple? Bed linen, blinds, etc, kind of rich velvety purples? Might be too dark with the paint, difficult to tell on screen.

I would paint the wardrobe doors to match the walls but no beading etc.

I'd add plain white curtains or the wall colour and white if I found them.

I'd get nice sized bedside tables in the same wood as the bed.

All the black framed art would be removed and I'd go for white frames to bounce off the blue colour.

The laundry basket would be moved and all the stuff in the corner sorted out.

I would put a nice mirror on the bed head wall or mirrors just above each bedside table for light to bounce around when lamps are on. With new matching table lamps on the table. I'd move the sonos lamp.

What is your ceiling light like?

Paint the bed frame white, put laundry basket inside the wardrobe. Plain white bedding and floor length white curtains. Match all the handles.

bobbikato · 20/06/2020 14:20

I would of painted the wall around the window white to match long white silky curtains with green potted plants on the window sill .
a nice ottoman below to serve as a seat .
Could also put some coloured medieval stained glass in the top parts of the window - for a nice prism sun/ moon light patterns on the walls .

Radiator cover with some plants on the window sill. I'd also put some big square cushions on the bed.

notso · 20/06/2020 16:46

I definitely think you should square off the blue, that weird shape around the coving would drive me mad.

DP is going to read this tomorrow, I'm excited to see what we can agree on! I've started looking for bedside tables already, that's a definite one we're going with.

We're also going to play around with the furniture and try some rearranging.

The art is staying, DP loves it. It's hard to tell from the pics but they're nice pics and they're embedded with some kind of paint which absorbs light throughout the day so when it's pitch black, as we're falling asleep, the paintings shimmer with light and show eg the sea, a campfire. I'm blind with contact lenses out so never see this, but DP likes watching as he falls asleep. Not sure if the pics would work in white frames? Might suggest that.

Lamps is one of the sticking points, we don't need two Sonos ones, and they're too pricey to buy just for show, so I think we'll be mismatched. I'm going to just live with that, sorry MN.

Plants on shelves are another definite yet, and DP loves the small bookcase idea.

Armchairs are a sore point as apparently I will just use one as a dumping ground and it'll become covered in clutter. The one we currently have is an old family one, a nursing chair I think which I recently recovered for the living room then decided it didn't fit. I'm not sure what to do with it so it's sitting there for now, but it is too low apart from anything else. I'd love a bold statement chair, but a) clutter as above and b) I don't know what colour.

Curtains, I'd love a floaty voile type effect, think DP would go for it, but I'm not sure that over the ugly white blind would be good. That one needs more thought from us.

And big cushions on the bed... I'm inclined to say that's not really me. I tried in the spare room and I'm not convinced. I am into knitting though, maybe I could knit some chunky covers for cushions we've got hidden in a drawer. But again colour??

So basically bedside cabs, plants, bookshelf, and furniture tetris are a go, the rest is in the 'thinking' pile. Might try and find a way to put the laundry basket in the en suite, that would make sense... And we have a floor lamp looking a home

Absolutely do not paint the bed!

The bed frame is lovely. White will ruin it and make it look like cheap. The room needs texture dont take out the texture!

I agree that matching bedside tables will help, in a similar wood to the bed. A throw for the bed.

I also think you need some new pillows, the pillows look sad and flat which makes your bedding look flat. Puffed up pillows that are more vertical will make the bed look more made, then add a throw.

I think a rug, a shelf and some plants. Also some books.

CountFosco · 25/06/2020 15:08

I think it's a lovely room and a lovely colour, I think you just need to be a bit braver so everything looks like a deliberate decision. Emphasise the things you love and use colour to 'hide' the things you don't e.g. completely agree the wardrobe doors should be painted the same blue as the walls (but I wouldn't do beading to imitate panelling, that just looks naff, real panelling is lovely though), I'd paint the radiator to match the wall as well or replace it with a fancy beautiful one. Personally, I'd also take the blue all the way over the ceiling since you love the colour, it will feel cocooning. Yes to the laundry basket going into the en suite. I'd put all the paintings either above the bed or above the cute chair but if your DH likes them where they are so he can look at them in bed that's fine, it is your room. Chair should be pulled out a bit (I think it's lovely) and maybe have a lamp or table or small bookcase or big mirror next to it, did you say you had a standard lamp that could go? I'd go full length blue curtains, but think about how any pattern on the curtains goes with the pattern on your duvets and chair, maybe white will be easier with that duvet (which I think is pretty). I don't have an issue with the mismatching lamps but if you want to be really fancy the rest of the things on the bedside table would all reference each other in shape or colour so it looks a bit designery. Difficult to do in real life unless you are scrupulous about hiding things you really need there in a top drawer. Now, those white chest of drawers, are they solid wood or IKEA type cardboard. If solid wood paint one mustard and one a toning blue (from your painted door knobs which are very cool) and rearrange around the room as a PP suggested. How much storage space do you need on your bedside tables? What about something rattan? I agree with PPs that dark wood will add warmth and feel more modern than all the painted white wood. Don't have tons of pillows and cushions on the bed if you'll find it annoying but a textured or colourful throw might be useful and attractive.

@CountFosco you are without doubt my favourite Internet human this year. Thanks for your lovely words and excellent ideas. I'm on the case looking for bedside tables, and the rest is all on the 'to discuss' list.
We actually have some matching bedside cabinets from the same maker as the bed, but they're in another room, so they'll be good to test the look out, but ideally I'd like something old / vintage for the bedroom rather than the other ones, plus I don't want to make the spare room look mismatched! Might put a pic of that up next 😜

Why thankyou Smile. If you like vintage have you looked on Vinterior. It's my latest obsession. Everyone I know says they are saving money with lockdown, I just seem to be spending more on furniture than I ever did on clothes/nights out/petrol/children's activities and I have so many wishlists on Vinterior it's ridiculous!
