What does my bedroom need to be less bla?

Recently painted our bedroom, I live the colour, it's just the right balance between colourful and calming IMO, but somehow it seems a little flat.

I'm not sure what the room needs, maybe some plants? An accent colour? A statement or two somewhere? All ideas gratefully received.

Paint headboard white to match other wood. Standing lamp in dark corner. Mirror. Snuggly rug.

anothermansmother · 18/06/2020 13:23

The wardrobe doors need either texture or colour (although this could date quickly) the handles look lovely close up. Something like this? Easy to do as you just add pieces to the existing doors and paint.

I think to me the mismatched furniture makes it look a little "students". If you're not willing to paint the bed frame (although I would) you could look at getting natural wood bedside furniture. Definitely consider a radiator cover (I don't know why a PP thinks they block heat; ours certainly don't.) Also a black wrought iron curtain rods with pale drapes. Your room has real potential, it just needs to be "finished".

Fozzleyplum · 18/06/2020 13:35

I think it needs white cotton bedlinen and a really good quality patterned throw. We get ours from Melin Tregwynt and Anta.

goingoverground · 18/06/2020 13:47

If you don't like the wardrobe doors, you could add beading "panels" on them to echo the room doors and traditional big, round door knobs in the same metal as the room handles or coloured glass.

Paint the bedi would paint the bed white, gu'd paint the bed white, get a large rug that sits partly under the ebd. A large arteork above the bed. If you can afford it seap the radiator for one if thos d cast iron ones (only because I love them!)

Dazedandconfused28 · 18/06/2020 14:11

OMG - the typosShock sorry!

It meant to read:

I would paint the bed white,m, get a large rug that sits partly under the bed. A large artwork above the head of the bed. If you can afford it swap the radiator for one if those cast iron ones (only because I love them!)

And yes to matching all picture frames & check what height you should be handing them. A bright armchair might complement the wall colour & add depth.

Dazedandconfused28 · 18/06/2020 14:13

I think re hanging the art could help too.

@Dazedandconfused28
Thanks! I'm stealing that, DH is 6"4 and puts everything to suit his eyeline. I'm 5"3 and almost have to crane my neck to see anything.

The colour on the walls looks similar to Little Greene Tivoli. This link has some suggested colours to complement or contrast. Might help you decide on accessories etc.

I don’t like it, sorry. Albeit your style it isn’t to my taste, but at the same time I don’t think you’ve pulled it off. It is bland.

I don’t like the mismatched furniture (both style and colour). This might sound rude but your furniture looks a bit basic, it sort of reminds me of a teen boy’s room where a basic set of furniture will do?

I’d keep the window wall clear, so remove the picture and add curtains or blinds. Is that a laundry basket in the window corner? Obv get rid of that. Don’t really like the chair there either.

The bed wall has a lot going on. You need matching end tables, put the masses of stuff in the end table drawers. Get matching lamps. Put the hamper in the en suite or hide it in the wardrobe?

I’d move your all pictures to that small section of wall between the hallway & that door (where you already have one hanging). Get a large plant to sit there.

You need to repurpose your wardrobes to fit the chest of drawers in, you don’t actually have that much free floor space as all your walls have doors/window/bed etc so there’s not a great spot.

Appuskidu · 18/06/2020 15:11

Curtains, definitely!

Can I ask where you got the bedside lamp to the right side of the bed from? @Hermano

longtompot · 18/06/2020 15:26

It's a lovely calm room and the colour is gorgeous.
My suggestions are...
Can you get a bigger arm chair and create a reading corner where your current chair and washing basket is?
Pictures on the walls, shelves with some ornaments and trailing plants would help. Also helps with regards to air pollution, plants that is.
A rug, and if you can stretch to it, a big one that goes under your bed and out around the edges, like in this photo, though not that rug, unless you like it.
Curtains will also help.
Just try and get a bit of 'you' in there, so some ornaments or hanging things on one or two door handles. I have my ballet shoes hanging on the foot my bed frame which I wore for my wedding. I also have a fabric heart on the head of my bed frame.

I think different bedding would go a long way. And some scatter cushions.

Definitely get curtains

Clear away the clutter from the bedside tables

TheVanguardSix · 18/06/2020 17:00

artwork above the bed and around the room
a mirror on one of the side walls
Good lighting or at least a different ceiling lamp (see Sinnerlig from Ikea)
Visit the British Blanket Company online for a beautiful throw on the bed
and look at Myakka for some lovely cushions to throw on the bed

Heathcliff27 · 18/06/2020 17:12

Going against just about everyone as well, sorry Grin

Heathcliff27 · 18/06/2020 17:13

Ooops too soon. I avoid blue because I always feel it looks cold. However if you like it great, i agree wall art and big contrasting fluffy throws, cushions etc would cosy it up

Posypetal · 18/06/2020 17:15

It looks a bit student, the mismatched furniture doesn’t do it any favours so I would focus into hay first.

New ceiling light put in, shutters or maybe curtains? Plants.

I think your bed could be made to look a bit more cosy. More pillows, cushions, white bedding etc.

You asked! Grin

Hermano · 18/06/2020 19:14

Right, 100 posts and almost all of them positive with great suggestions. This thread has been a huge success. Thanks for all the input. I will have a think about all of these, work out which fit us / me, and start implementing! V interested that a lot of people think wooden furniture rather than white, I'll look for some pinterest etc pics and see what I think.

Artwork yes - definitely need. Bedding... I'm not sure, I'm going to mull this over. Ours is only 4 years old, which in my mind is still fairly new Grin. I have an aversion to anything pink so I'd have to pick something which avoids that... And I'm not keen on plain white, so maybe a bold throw would help pull it together.

The lamp was actually from IKEA, they did a collaboration with Sonos.

Floor - I agree a rug might add something, I'm hesitant to choose a rug when we've still got the manky old carpet which was here when we moved in, it's one of the last things which needs replacing and I haven't begun to tackle that one yet, too many decisions!

And yes, the furniture is all studenty. We bought it about 12 years ago for our first house together. We've moved and moved and now we're slowly replacing things with nicer items for the long term.

And the comments about the need to decluttet the side tables. All I will say is you should see them normally 🤣

Huge thanks, this has been great

OP for the wardrobe doors, you could get a local joiner to make some simple ie not fussy panelled doors or you can buy beading in B&Q that sticks on and gives the look of panelled doors. I still have the original fitted wardrobes in my room from when we bought the house but I’ve painted them the same colour as the walls. They were previously white and the contrast with the walls made a feature of them, now they just sink in and you’d never know they were yellow melamine underneath!
