What does my bedroom need to be less bla?

Recently painted our bedroom, I live the colour, it's just the right balance between colourful and calming IMO, but somehow it seems a little flat.

I'm not sure what the room needs, maybe some plants? An accent colour? A statement or two somewhere? All ideas gratefully received.

I'd paint the white if the ceiling on the window and door walls down so the blue is a uniform height.
The line of laundry basket bedside table, bed and chest of drawers looks a bit cluttered. Move the laundry basket.
I'd consider a matching pair of bedside tables and maybe matching lamps and move the drawers to the space between the hall and the (I assume) bathroom or the chair area if space permits, it's hard to tell on the picture.
I'd make more of a gallery wall rather than having the pictures dotted around. You definitely need something on the bed wall so possibly there would be good.
Curtains would look great or maybe lots of flowy white voile.
Definitely new bedding.

If you want to add colour I'd go for orange or yellow if you want bright or maybe navy or dark grey if you prefer darker colours. However adding more plain white could look really fresh with the bright blue too. It depends how you want it to feel.

Apolloanddaphne · 18/06/2020 10:54

It needs an accent colour - raspberry would be good. Also pictures on your walls, nice bright bedding. It just needs more finishing touches.

MiniTheMinx · 18/06/2020 10:57

I think you also need a rug.

Turkeydrumstick · 18/06/2020 11:01

Love the colour. I think it needs curtains, maybe a rug and then a throw and some scatter cushions on the bed to finish it off

goingoverground · 18/06/2020 11:04

Crisp white bedding would lift the room. The bed is the largest thing in the room and the bedding is neither a good contrast nor match for the walls. If you don't mind the faff, cushions and a throw on the bed in contrasting textures and contrasting or toning colours.

It's all very horizontal, there is not much vertical variation, the furniture is all of a similar height. More artwork on the walls and a taller lamp or a standard lamp, maybe a tall plant would help. There isn't really a focal point for the room. You need something that stands out. It could be the bed/bedding or a dramatic piece of art (or gallery wall) or a bold mirror or a statement piece of furniture/lighting, even a big plant.

I think the pictures you have are too dark for the room. You could group them with some lighter pictures in different shades of blue or black and white if you want a restful look. Or you could swap them for something more colourful if you want a brighter look.

ttigerlilly · 18/06/2020 11:07

Love the colour! I think a couple of lovely green houseplants, some fairy lights, and an art print or two on the wall would look greatSmile

InterestingIris · 18/06/2020 11:09

Paint the bed headboard white.
White bedding with matching blue accent cushions.
A white blind in the window, inside the frame-just pulled down a few inches to soften the window.
A white tall lamp in far right corner.
A picture (white and light blues) above the bed.

sarahc336 · 18/06/2020 11:10

I think a couple of plants would look lovely against the blue. I wonder whether your black photo frames should match more the wood of the bed, the blue doesn't seem to go as well with the black, it does look good against the wood though. Personally I think more of a pure white bed sheet and white curtains to make the blue stand out? Possibly some more prints or a mirror or shelving on the wall behind the bed to break that wall up a little?
I think the rooms almost there it just needs a few little tweaks xx

DustyMaiden · 18/06/2020 11:15

A pig shelf definitely.

Cushions on the bed in a different colour. Roman blind at the window. Better lamps and some artwork over the bed

CarolVordermansArse · 18/06/2020 11:22

White headboard, a more delicate style, that one is clunky.
A throw with the colour of the walls in and another colour, something warmer or brighter, no need to buy new bedding.
No plants, they are not good in bedrooms unless they are purifying ones but even then they are not good for sleep.
Change handles on doors.

CarolVordermansArse · 18/06/2020 11:22

I want a pig shelf.

Legoandloldolls · 18/06/2020 11:29

Curtains or just voiles. You wouldnt need to change the blind. Maybe a coloured cushion, trow scattered on the bed and chair?

I think its lovely

Franticbutterfly · 18/06/2020 11:32

It definitely needs warming up with fabrics or different textures. A lamp shade instead of the Sputnik light, curtains, a throw, cushions, new pillows make a bed look bouncier, larger lamps with a fabric shade...when you use shinier materials the light bounces around in a way that doesn't feel cosy and relaxing.

Squidwitch · 18/06/2020 11:32

A pig shelf to put my lindor on so toddler thieves can't reach.

Your room is lovely, I can only dream of being able to walk round a bed in the normal fashion, not sideways.
Buy Def needs colours, new duvet cover and gorgeous vibrant blind in a deep fuschia blowsy modern floral

anothermansmother · 18/06/2020 11:42

You need to make more of the window, like others have said add curtains. I wouldn't add more of the wall colour as you've painted every wall in it, so try a contrasting colour in soft furnishings. Also make more of a feature of the wardrobe doors, they're very flat and the handles are dated. Also the bedstead looks very orange against the blue of the wall, so either paint it to match the other furniture or buy a new one. It looks like a lovely big light room.

NagaisAce · 18/06/2020 11:50

Haven't readcre0lies so apologise if already said.
Curtains
Accent colour - mustard
Paint your headboard white.
Rug.

Hermano · 18/06/2020 11:50

Lots of really good ideas, huge thanks! I'll go through these in detail and tell DP changes are afoot

A few points answered.

I think we're keen to keep the bed as it is, I love it and wouldn't want to ruin it with a bad paint job, plus it's fairly new so I wouldn't want to change it irreparably to fit the walls which might change again in 5 years. Maybe some other accents in naturals, eg plants, would help the wood blend in more

The wardrobe handles are newly painted by me in an attempt to be stylish! Close up pic attached. Are they awful or more OK when you can see them properly? Hard hat on ready to be told they're awful 😂

The bedding is actually a nice (IMO) runt which blends nicely with the walls, I think the pics don't show that. Close up also attached. Bed looks weird and flat because we're too hot for a duvet at the moment, it's normally a bit puffier. We have another set of bedding in a chartreuse (Scion Mr Fox) which gives a different colour but really jars with the new walls I think.

A little bookshelf and plant is a great idea, I like that.

Lamps... The weird sputnik one is a lamp with an inbuilt Sonos, it's brand new and is DP's favourite thing in the world so it's staying I'm afraid! Maybe a nice plant there will hide it a bit?

Main things I'd do.
Paint headboard white
Replace washing basket for white or move it out of room.
White curtains and bedding with coordinated cushions /throw for a fresh look, or patterned bold bedding if you prefer a more statement look
Can the chest of drawers by the bed fit where the chair is? If so loose the chair and put the drawers there with something nice on it or some art on the wall in that corner.
Move the picture on the right of the bed to above the bed.
Get matching bedside table and lamps.

Ok, I am going to say it - NO cushions or throws unless you actually use them.

I find all those 'dressing the room' stuff from TV designer shows is rubbish to actually live with.
No radiator covers, they are twee and block the heat.

I think at the moment it is veyr plain. It needs, as PP said, something else, some texture. But whatever you put in, make sure it is something that works in your lifestyle.

So, if you like reading, add a bookcase with maybe a plant or an ornament or two.

If you like pictures, or have some great photos to go up, add some pictures.

if you are a clean line/minimalist and the idea of cushions/pictures and ornaments is an anathema, then add a large rug, and curtains, or colour on the bedding to add a second dimension to the room.

I love the walls, but I would curtains with that colour in in some way, they could even just be the wall colour + white, that would tie it all in, or you could add another colour to the mix and then more pops of that round the room.

Justgivemesomepeace · 18/06/2020 11:57

Ok seeing those knobs I'd pick up the mustard and blues in cushions/throws on the bed with white bedding. If you are keeping the bed I think you really need to change the white chests by it to a similar wooden style. They really don't work together. Then the washing basket would look better too.

nubeejinnings · 18/06/2020 11:59

A rug, some pictures and a throw over the headboard if you don't want to paint it, or some nice fairy lights.
