What does my bedroom need to be less bla?

Recently painted our bedroom, I live the colour, it's just the right balance between colourful and calming IMO, but somehow it seems a little flat.

I'm not sure what the room needs, maybe some plants? An accent colour? A statement or two somewhere? All ideas gratefully received.

The duvet cover is pretty, but I don't think it goes with the walls. It is a washed out version of the walls, and you need the actual wall colour, a bit bolder on the bed.

Put chair (with bright throw and cushions) where hamper is, get smaller bright (teal or accent and metal?) bedsides, put white chest to right of radiator hiding hamper in corner to left of wardrobes, maybe paint bed white or deeper blue or contrast accent depending how valuable the wood quality is, stronger pattern on bedding in white and wall tones. White blackout blind and simple pattern curtain panels floor to ceiling.

You can easily bring it all together with soft furnishing: Curtains or a blind, cushions and a throw or blanket at the bottom of the bed. I'd also consider painting the furniture, getting a pair of matching statement lamps and a set of pictures above the bed.

Pig shelves and runt bedding. Grin

I think mustard is a great choice OP.

Ok seeing those knobs I'd pick up the mustard and blues in cushions/throws on the bed with white bedding.

Agree.

I’m glad you aren’t going to paint the headboard. It would ruin it.

Change of bedding and I’d probably put some dress curtains up

This is so much fun getting all your ideas! Thanks

Do you spend time in your bedroom other than to sleep at night? I've never really understood the need for so much stuff in a bedroom... it's not like a living room where you may have guests in and it needs to look nice Grin

Hermano · 18/06/2020 12:05

All my rooms have some variation on mustard or orange as the accent colour, often paired with teal or a marine blue. I was hoping to go different here, I was thinking maybe shades of mocha as a low key accent? But maybe mustard is meant to be

And the person who said to modernise the wardrobe doors, yes! I hate them. However I have no idea what nice wardrobe doors would look like? I even started a thread on it once but noone replied. Vvv keen to see pics of doors which would work here

Another vote for a mustard throw/blanket. Personally I think the headboard is too nice to paint (dark wood adds warmth to the room) and would look at whether you can do anything with the blander white furniture. There’s a lot of white with the cupboard doors, trim, ceiling, blind etc so if you can add some interest to those through changing the handles, painting (there are primers that allow you to paint on almost any material) or stick on wallpaper/decals that would liven the room up.

ScottishStottie · 18/06/2020 12:09

I like the design on the wardrobe handles, but i think the shape (flat circles) looks a bit dated imo. Longer bar style ones would work better i think.

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 18/06/2020 12:10

My bedroom is a very similar colour, and I also love it. We have quite a lot of pictures, including a big one above the bed, a large bookcase and curtains similar to these: www.pinterest.com.mx/pin/537054324304535386/

The mix of dark teal and strong pink really works (I think) and allows us to use bedding with similar pinks in it.

AudHvamm · 18/06/2020 12:11

Just seen what you said about mustard, you could take any of the other colours from those lovely door knobs instead.

ScottishStottie · 18/06/2020 12:13

You could get wodden slatted wardrobe doors that might tie in the wood on the headboard? Not sure how that would look with the other doors though.

LockdownWaistline · 18/06/2020 12:26

Going against the grain I really like it!! The colour is amazing, what's it called? I'd prob go with darker contrast bedding or maybe curtains?

IdblowJonSnow · 18/06/2020 12:30

I love it as it is. One thing that jumped out a bit was the radiator, one of those deep old fashioned ones would be lovely. But guessing you wont want to fanny about with that now it's all finished. But maybe it could be painted blue?
I'd just go for a few cushions, nice chair and plants etc. (Oh and iron your bedding!!) Very unmumsnet I know!
Really like the nobs! Grin
Enjoy your room, it's really lovely.

ishouldtryabiteachdayy · 18/06/2020 12:46

Pictures need white frames or frames to match headboard even better. I don't think your pictures are in the right position.

Curtains even if just for show. Could you match the bedding or go for pop of mustard, grey and even blue if you can match it , nothing to ott as it's tricky with patterned bedding. I'm a fan of plain bedding and patterned curtains myself !

A feature arm chair would be nice.

I like the knobs and the bedding.

Posted some ideas..

Matching lamps and bedside tables

ChipsyChopsy · 18/06/2020 12:54

I think it depends what you want. An eclectic, cool, interesting bedroom. Or a minimalist, plain, soothing room.

The answer to this will dictate a lot. The mismatched furniture that people are picking up on is more of an issue in option two than option one.

The head of the bed needs to be more of a focus I think. If you don't want to change the headboard, you could add a shelf above it (maybe one of those picture shelves to change things around easily), and prop a couple of eye catching prints and maybe a trailing plant on it. I like to dress a bed with pillows standing up to give height, a set of large square ones, then two sets of regular pillows, a couple of smaller throw cushions and at least one throw at the bottom of the bed. If these coordinate with the chair it will feel more professional.
If you have a functional blind for the window, maybe you could add a rail with a light voile or linen curtain, pulled to one side with good length to puddle on the floor.
I'd change the lamps to make more of a statement and make sure that they match. If you can't stretch to changing any furniture, I'd change all the knobs to more interesting matching ones.

indecisivewoman81 · 18/06/2020 13:01

I think it needs soft texture to make it cosy. Something like a fluffy sheepskin style rug in a warm oat colour, a thrown on the bed, a big tall leafy plant in the corner. Maybe move the little cheat of drawers from the side of your bed and have a little table there instead with a lamp and a couple of trinkets.

Menaimum · 18/06/2020 13:12

If you love the bed and hate your wardrobes get your bedsides to match the headboard and paint the wardrobes entirely in the wall colour and they'll disappear. Continue your lovely accent colours from knobs onto wardrobes and bedding. Throws add interest and are useful but decorative cushions on a bed are a dusty PITA.
