Any help please, I’ve messed up so badly

We went to check in on line on Thursday (to depart Friday) and realised our kids passports have expired. It’s just unbelievable disorganisation and general uselessness on my part. My mum booked the holiday - it is her 75th birthday today. And me and the children are not there. My husband has gone, as the villa is remote and she can’t drive over there (Italy) so it was a choice between that or cancelling. Mums oldest friend (64 years long friendship) died unexpectedly two weeks ago and she desperately needs this, so cancelling was not an option. Since Thursday night I’ve been in rallying mode. The kids have been out having fun non-stop, brave face from me. Harry Potter sleepovers etc. then I’m awake at 2am desperately trying to stave off panic attacks. I feel so awful and so exhausted. Appointment is first thing tomorrow at the passport office for the one week emergency service. Does anyone have any clue about how I can secure these as soon as possible? I’ll then have to sort flights and stuff. I know in the grand scheme of things there are a million worse situations to be in but I’m devastated and exhausted and autistic and after 72 hours of wearing the fixed ‘mummy will sort it’ smile, I’ve run out of everything

Says who? My insurance policy states everyone over 16 needs one, in fact Compare The Market states it's still the case.

apologies
i was wrong

bur i have claimed multiple times over the years on travel insurance and never once been asked for it!

What a lovely post by @softsummerrain sums it all up.

Franjipanl8r · 11/08/2024 15:21

I don’t really see what being autistic has to do with fucking up a holiday. I’ve fucked up a holiday before and felt exactly the same as you and I’m not autistic. This is just a normal part of being a human, we mess up, we get stressed, we learn and then we don’t mess up the next time. Stop giving yourself such a hard time. This isn’t a you problem it’s just life.

It sounds very hopeful that you'll get the passports quickly OP. Meanwhile, you seem to have done everything else you can to be ready to jump on a plane the minute they arrive.

In the meantime, continue making it an adventure. Do practice check ins. Guess the weight of the suitcase. Eat pizza/pasta for dinner. Learn to say hello and thank you in Italian. Have a red/white/green dressing up day. Make a scrapbook of the pre-holiday adventures, that the kids can finish when you get there. Send lots of funny pics to Dad and Gran.

Love these ideas!

I stand by my post. No matter when the OPs mum made the booking it is not her job to check that all the family's passports were still in date! HTH

Yes, I know. I wasn't disagreeing with you. I quoted your post when adding mine as if to say "Yes, That's true and what's more ..." etc.
Sorry, I really should've either made that perfectly clear or just not quoted you at all.

DogJog · 11/08/2024 15:38

Hope it goes ok tomorrow OP and you all get on holiday soon. I'm still laughing about the PP booking DC on a different flight 🤣

nosleepforme · 11/08/2024 15:47

Well I highly suggest you take passport pics along with those documents or you will not be able to renew.

diddl · 11/08/2024 15:57

Fingers crossed for you Op.

We would have had to cancel/postpone unless it could be guaranteed that my husband only had a couple of days with just my mum!

I don’t understand how this happens. I’m autistic with ADHD. Which means I have to work incredibly hard to keep things together… but I’m 35 now so I know about it, I know what happens and I know I have to be on top of it. When I book a holiday, or my kid’s dad books a holiday for them (we are split and passports are kept at mine), I will go and look at the passports at the same time. Because I know what I’m like so it’s like in a column together in my head “book holiday and look at passports” like it’s one task.

When you’re ND, you need to have coping mechanism. How do you not look at the passports?

What a peach of a human you are

Rosecoffeecup · 11/08/2024 16:14

It'll be a story to tell and laugh about in a few years. I hope your mother and husband have an enjoyable week - do they spend much time together normally? They'll be best pals by the time you get there

boredaf · 11/08/2024 16:24

Oh OP. Please don’t be so hard on yourself (although I appreciate it’s much easier said than done!!). It really is one of them things, we all make mistakes wonder how we’ve managed it!

To put a positive spin on it, at least you’ve found out now and have a fighting chance of at least of having some time on holiday. You haven’t turned up at the airport with out of date passports, at which point you really would have had no options, you’ve found them just under a week before you’re due to fly. With a bit of luck, you will hopefully get some time away. Fingers crossed for you x

The photos will have been submitted online during the application so no need to take any with her

Yes, countersigning is done 👍🏻 I never took my husbands name officially - it doesn’t say to, but should I take my marriage certificate if my name is different from the children? It’s a renewal not first time, but I just don’t want anything to go wrong

Bring everything !!!

Would you consider getting an app or software to help you with lists before a holiday in future ?

I use KanBan Flow and it’s AMAZING. Best of luck x

No, I was so desperate to get out by then that we risked it. Worked it out from the latest time the post would deliver + airport travel + 3 hours. Postman delivered bang in the middle of the four hour window, so had two pretty anxious hours, but totally worth it
