Barcelona was a big disappointment to me,couldn't see or feel the charm that everyone went on about.

Seattle also...was expecting a fab place that was voted number one place to live a while ago.Just another big city..nothing special imo.

What cities did you find disappointing?

I was talking about Vienna.

Kewcumber · 13/02/2008 20:56

apart from the opera house (and youcan get a decent opera house in any big city) I didn;t think viense architecture was that great. all a bit germanic for my liking.

I knew I'd think of one. I don't like Venice. It gives me the creeps.

I think it might have something to do with the film, 'Don't Look Now.'

Vienna is very big. Unless you really know what you're doing, it can seem extremely dull. Salzburg is truly gorgeous, though.

msappropriate · 13/02/2008 21:01

I liked the variety the medieval bits , the baroque bits, the art nouveau stuff and the funky arty stuff

Munich
Brussels
Lisbon
Frankfurt (spent a year there), although that wasn't a disappointment as such because everyone had warned us that it was very dull and odd.

Alibobster · 13/02/2008 21:25

Barcelona - although I was 5 months pregnant at the time possible would have enjoyed it more if I was sampling the local brew! MuffinMclay, love the name - have just been reading HairyMcLary to ds tonight

Millarkie · 13/02/2008 21:39

Auckland (reminded me of Bournemouth for some reason)

TheDullWitch · 13/02/2008 21:42

New Orleans: a theme park. (before it was blown away obv!)

Barcelona: just traffic traffic, no green spaces at all (they sold them all to the developers)

Venice: also a theme park, and the worst food in Italy.

ivykaty44 · 13/02/2008 21:44

I thought Auckland was just so small for a major city, I think you have just twined Auckland with Bourmouth really well. I han't been for 20 years so it may have changed just a bit - even grown.

cardy · 13/02/2008 21:48

Perth.....boring, boring, boring

MrsJohnCusack · 13/02/2008 22:03

can't be doing with Brussels at all
not keen on Milan either

Lionstar · 13/02/2008 22:06

Naples, twas filthy and you get run over by mopeds at every step.

LA wasn't all that

TotalChaos · 13/02/2008 22:18

Vienna - royal palaces, great art galleries, opera house, imperial architecture, fab cafes with waiter service and gorgeous cakes. Oh and trams. So possibly not everyone's cup of coffee.

UnquietDad · 13/02/2008 22:22

I must have caught Vienna on a bad day - I remember it being the low-point of my last big European adventure!

StrangeTown · 13/02/2008 22:29

Sydney. I know, I know, but everyone raves about it and it was just another big city at the end of the day and it was hot.

Agree about Barcelona, it is rough as rats in some places...

wobbegong · 13/02/2008 22:45

Another vote for Sydney. Couldn't get on with it at all.

nooka · 13/02/2008 22:48

We though that Boston was not much to go on about (but we had just toured New England)

whichwitch · 13/02/2008 23:45

Vancouver, Lisbon, Frankfurt - I found all dull.

Not a big fan of Amsterdam either

VirginiaWoolf · 13/02/2008 23:53

Paris.
General atmosphere of, "You're soooo honoured to be allowed to visit our fabulous city...."
So far up its own rear orifice.....

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 13/02/2008 23:55

Paris. Was years ago now but DH and I were too nervous to try to communicate so we walked the length and breadth of it to see the sites.. and found it pretty minging really, when you look closely. Given all the romantic hype about it anyway..

SappyLamour · 13/02/2008 23:56

Bilbao

what an utter utter shithole.

the bits i saw anyway...

and where the hell did they hide that guggenheim place? i never saw it...

was looking for the port to cath a brebooked ferry. asked everyone where the port was. did they know? did they hell. all looked at me like i was off my tree. was a bit surreal actually... i mean, besides the guggenheim, what exactly is bilbao most famous for if it isnt the ruddy great shipping port>???

v odd.

reminded me a lot of the hackney of my youth as it goes...

TabithaTwitchett · 13/02/2008 23:56

Prague - went for my honeymoon and it was strange, sinister and involved too much walking.

Paris is another hate of mine!
