Barcelona was a big disappointment to me,couldn't see or feel the charm that everyone went on about.

Seattle also...was expecting a fab place that was voted number one place to live a while ago.Just another big city..nothing special imo.

What cities did you find disappointing?

Glad I'm not the only one who got the creeps in Venice.

Granny22 · 14/02/2008 00:32

Waited many, many years to go to Venice and was immensly disappointed. Unfriendly, unhelpful people - just a mechanism to extract money from tourists imo.

But for truely awful it has to be Istanbul. It was filthy, ghastly weather, very muggy culminating in a thunderstormeveryone was out to 'do' you and we got held to ransom by a taxi driver.

Thought Toronto was pretty average but loved Vancouver and Calgary.

OverRated · 14/02/2008 00:40

San Francisco

And another vote for Barcelona. Lovely parts to it (especially Gaudi-related) but not what I hoped.

Scramble · 14/02/2008 01:26

Paris- Love it
Barcelona- Apart from Gaudi stuff its a bit unexciting.
Dublin- Nothing too much to say about dublin, had a horrible weekwend there, supposed to be a girly weekend but aupposed friend had actually planned to meet up with a guy there so there I was 11pm on a Sat night in my hotel alone in Dublin, will have to give it another go as the nightlife looked good, day time doesn't look inspiring.
NewYork loved the buzz and the choice of things to do and eat .
Venice Totaly loved it, in April it was perfect, lovely feel to it and not too busy.
Glasgow great shopping eating and nightlife, plus free museums and lots of parks.
Edinburgh Good high street and alternative shopping, too touristy but good range of bightlife, buzzing during the festival.
London Not seen enough to comment.
Rome too hot but loads to see and good pizza .
Taragonna lots of touristy roman stuff and good cafes on the squares.

GreatGooglyMoogly · 14/02/2008 01:56

Barcelona, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Berlin, Athens.

slim22 · 14/02/2008 02:39

Rome!.......Did not visit much but failed to feel any of the expected magic....and it was the first leg of my honeymoon!

GreatGooglyMoogly · 14/02/2008 03:38

Also Granada, Spain.

dooneygirl · 14/02/2008 03:42

Los Angeles. I never expected much, but I can't think of one good thing I like it.

Paris was my biggest disappointment. I'd idolized and dreamed about it for years, and then when I finally made it to Europe, and took a train all night to get there to be there for 1/2 a day, it was filthy beyond belief and incredibly crowded, and everyone smoked.

ConfusedMover · 14/02/2008 05:55

Istanbul

mymama · 14/02/2008 06:18

Rome
Dublin

Chester - thought Chester Zoo was crap!

belgo · 14/02/2008 07:13

I agree about Brussels it's not very exciting to visit.

But cannot agree with those of you who were disappointed with Barcelona - I've been there three times and find if fantastic - but we have friends who live there so I suppose they show us the best bits rather then the most obvious touristy bits.

belgo · 14/02/2008 07:15

oh and I also didn't 'get' Toronto - it just didn't seem to have any life, especially compared to New York

Sunshinemummy · 14/02/2008 07:48

Gosh I disagree with so much of this.

Love Prague, Rome, Barcelona, Venice, Florence, Naples (oh the food in Naples is to die for), Paris, Perth, Sydney, Pais, New York, LA, love love love Las Vegas.

Thought Brussels was a nice trip for two days but probably no more.

Dublin was ok, Athens too .

Love all the Scottish cities I've been to.

Only cities I have really dislike have been Adelaide and Wrexham (is it a city?).

Off to San Francisco in a few weeks so hope it doesn't match OverRated's assessment.

chopster · 14/02/2008 07:53

another vote for miami. QUite nice fro a drive through, skyline is great, but south beach is crap!!!

franke · 14/02/2008 07:55

Florence, Budapest, LA

lol at everyone finding Frankfurt dull - surely some mistake

MrsJohnCusack · 14/02/2008 08:24

big LOL at Wrexham being a city
I think it's quite hard to be disappointed with Wrexham, whatever were you expecting?

I REALLY want to go to Las Vegas AND San Francisco

chopster · 14/02/2008 08:39

I want to go to vegas and san francisco, determined to go that side of america next time. DP has been to vegas, and lvoes it. BIL is revisiting there for the fourth time atm.

smartiejake · 14/02/2008 08:50

I thought Prague was just lovely and another lovely place is Budapest. Brussels- yuk! but Bruge in Belgium is beautiful

So Frankfurt is still the consensus.

DON'T GO TO FRANKFURT.

Lots of the comments about Paris/VEnice/Barcelona may be when you went. Don't go anywhere when anyone else is going. Travel just after a terrorist attack or big natural disaster, the Americans are hiding under a blanket at home and waiters are forced to be nice to you because you are their only hope of tips.

Kewcumber · 14/02/2008 09:14

and don't go with boring twats.

belgo · 14/02/2008 09:16

yes, how much you enjoy a city does depend on the company you have!

I admit Brussels isn't the most exciting capital city, but dh and I went there for a day trip just a couple of weeks ago and we had a lovely time, and found a wonderful restaurant

PortAndLemon · 14/02/2008 09:27

I really enjoyed Rome and Dublin. And Boston (although admittedly only one person here has dissed Boston). I thought Boston was much more enjoyable than New York, which to be honest I could take or leave. Will remember not to go to Frankfurt.

Sunshinemummy · 14/02/2008 09:53

Not sure what I was expecting from Wrexham but it was so crap. Unfortunately DP had to live there for a while.

DP is taking me to San Fran for my birthday. Am really looking forward to it.

hifi · 14/02/2008 09:56

Singapore, so boring.

Madrid, so old fashioned.

Bristol, rough.
