For those whose DC have submitted their UCAS application without having yet taken the A-level (or equivalent) exams…

How are your DC getting on with hearing back from the universities?

DD has finally heard from KCL who’ve said they are heavily oversubscribed for the course she wanted (history and IR), but invited her to apply for another course (history only). Do you think that means she’d get an offer if she says she’s interested in history only?

mumonthehill · 01/04/2026 16:44

@Gazelda i would think so. Ds25 had this when he applied to Bath a few years ago now and then got an offer. It is worth her looking at the course and also seeing if they offer modules from the IR department that she could do. Ds19 is going for environmental science at Reading but can choose some modules from the geography department.

IR courses (single or joint honours) get a lot of lucrative international applicants; single honours history courses much less so.

Hello,
My son got a high TMUA score so no step. However, his mates who got offers with scores of 4.2 and 4.7 I think, maybe a bit lower, were not asked for a step. They had the standard A star, A star A offer (did 4 A levels) but they were offered on three.
Is your DC waiting for an offer? Hope this helps.

Hi @Llangewydd57 thanks for your helpful reply. Yes my DS is waiting to hear back from Warwick Maths. He has offers from Bath Maths, Bristol Maths and Warwick Maths & Stats. He received an after interview rejection from Cambridge. He is preparing for Step at the moment but with 4 A levels to study as well he is wondering if he will need Step for Warwick Maths. His TMUA is average and he is not contextual.

Llangewydd57 · 01/04/2026 20:49

He has four great offers already. Will he accept Warwick maths and stats and then swap to just maths once there?
I have experienced, over the years as a teacher, that universities often only offer one course if a student applies for two.

DC finally got his Bristol maths offer through this week. Unfortunately there is only 1 offer holders day left, on 15 April, and he has mocks that week.

We could go down to Bristol to have a look around over the Easter weekend, maybe.

It is Bristol vs Warwick vs Baths maths for first choice, with Southampton as insurance, probably.

hockeyfun · 02/04/2026 13:25

@WhisperingAngelisnotbad, as I said on this thread I have 1 dc at Warwick and 1 at Bristol - they have both having good but completely different experiences in terms of accommodation/ societies and night life. I would really encourage a visit to Bristol and go to the north village and see the catered accommodation, it’s such a different set up to Warwick. If your dc wants self catering then consider the wide range of locations across the city - you don’t get much choice.

Llangewydd57 · 02/04/2026 14:20

Great offers @WhisperingAngelisnotbad.

Always in awe of any dc doing a maths degree!

Final offer in today for DS & it’s thrown a spanner in the works. Warwick have offered him Maths & Physics rather than Maths. Grade requirements are slightly lower than for Maths. I’m not sure what he’ll do. He was considering combined Maths/Physics back in September but eventually settled on Maths as he’s not particularly keen on electricity but enjoys all other aspects.
Decisions, decisions.
