We've got to book a Sheffield hotel too, any ideas that don't break the bank?

ThatIcyCat · 09/12/2025 23:25

How was Leicester interview? Hope everyone did well

bluefineliner · 10/12/2025 07:01

@MyGreyBiscuit thanks, DD started learning in April so has taken a while but I sort of wanted it that way. Because she is such a perfectionist and has always been more academic than practical I wasn't sure how she'd take to learning. I also wanted her to have as much driving time with me as well to give her confidence. She passed her theory in May and Dec was the earliest test she could book so it worked out well. She is a very careful driver and very rule driven 😂but in her usual perfectionist style passed with no faults at all!

Now is the scary time, seeing her driving off on her own. She drove to the supermarket last night, in the dark, gale force winds and rain, bought some ham for her lunch today, sent me a photo of her front bay parking and came home 😁.

Struggled to find good hotels in Sheffield: Leonardo in Sheffield central and ok. The Florentine - gastro pub is close to campus but some rooms can be noisy. Novotel in City Centre is ok.

we've gone for the Leonardo - it's near the train station. We stayed there for open day. If you get the free membership, it's 10% off.

Wonderful she made it home with the ham @bluefineliner !! :) my plan is if he passes in March, then he can do dance pick up for his sister and that frees me up! :)

and just to say, I actually went to look for hotels before we booked the interview date - the original date he wanted, there were no rooms (well, at the place we wanted)!

thanks for the Leonardo hotel suggestion both of you, I'll check it out. I made a (cancellable) booking last night for Radisson Blu, but not sure about the noise level as there's a Christmas market next to it.

Edited

it'll be in January/Feb though so should be ok?

inae · 10/12/2025 09:33

brain fog is real 😅

MyGreyBiscuit · 10/12/2025 09:40

don't worry @inae I'm still in a fog... for the last 2 years! 😅

when have you booked yours? ours is 20th Jan.

inae · 10/12/2025 09:47

DD has Exeter earlier that week, so we booked Sheffield on Friday (also to avoid a clash with any of the Southampton interview dates). Sheffield email says no rescheduling for any reason.

I hope there will be some flexibility with Southampton, if DD gets the invite.

monkeytennismum · 10/12/2025 09:56

Hi. I thought it might be helpful to post our interview progress as it's useful seeing others' and my YP isn't top-of-the-range stats wise.

YP has GCSEs all 7-9, UCAT 2000, predicted A *, A, A, lots of wex (although appreciate that doesn't count for much at this stage). Oh and no contextual, state grammar school.

Rejected from Manchester (aspirational), interview offered for Plymouth, waiting on Lancaster & Liverpool 🤞🏻😬

yes we have the same... for Southampton and QM... Sheffield was quite strict about the dates!

The Rutland Hotel is really near the medical school (we stashed our bags there when we went up for open day) and I think they were offering discounts for student families so they might be minded to offer it for those interviewing? The staff were really lovely and friendly.

inae · 10/12/2025 12:23

Thanks @catty29 the hotel looks lovely and likely it's a quieter area than the city centre. The interviews are not at the Med School, they're are at the George Porter building.

Aha! That hotel might not be so ideal then (it is definitely very quiet though!). Hope the interview goes brilliantly. Still waiting to hear from Sheffield here but fear DD's UCAT not high enough so focussing on getting prepped for Birmingham.

are they not at the medical school?!!??!?!

inae · 10/12/2025 14:07

The email says George Porter Building, Sheffield, S3 7HQ which is closer to the city centre. That's a 20 min-walk from the Medical School, not too bad actually.

I've just seen it - the boy did forward it to me. Ok, gotta reorganise my meet ups then lol!!! (as you can see, I'm paying so much attention to the actual reason we are there!). 😂

rockstuckhardplace · 10/12/2025 17:04

Interestingly there's a Reddit thread saying the cutoff for Sheffield home is 2120. Is your 2080 student contextual, @mumsneedwine?

mumsneedwine · 10/12/2025 17:07

@rockstuckhardplace we don't think so (but maybe they've fallen into a group we didn't know existed !) I'll call Sheffield tomorrow as ask - they are usually v helpful.

Thanks! I've seen at least three threads by people claiming to have rung today and all say they were told 2120.

Oh Gosh really? That would be gutting for DD - missed it by 10 😣. I'm sort of clinging to the hope that quite alot on reddit proves to be factually incorrect (for instance my DD had well below the supposed 8.9 points you needed for Birmingham interview invitation according to reddit thread and still got one). Fingers crossed for your YP @rockstuckhardplace

Tsuipen · 10/12/2025 19:09

The Radisson is a new hotel - it only opened a year or so ago. I’d imagine it’s quite nice. Sheffield is our home uni for DD so luckily no hotel needed.
