Government putting asylum seekers in student accomodation

rriffraff · 12/09/2025 20:33

There is an article saying that the University of Leeds in Headingly is being used to house asylum seekers, I don't know if there are any further plans elsewhere.
It seems to me inappropriate to use student accomodation, I hope it will not be rolled out to other Uni's.

Fury in leafy suburb over plans to turn student halls into migrant accommodation

'Making student flats migrant homes will make street a battleground'

House-holders living near Mary Morris House in Shire Oak Road, in the Headingley area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, are divided over the bombshell announcement.

It’s not actively happening. It’s a plan.

I don’t know what people want to happen? They want the hotels to close, so this is proposed, and people get angry?

Quicker asylum decisions and then removal of failed applications.

I doubt everyone in an area would support this

A super majority perhaps? I do think local politics and some level of devolved taxation is the answer to a lot of these sort of problems.

There’s no need for this

I think they will be well assimilated (this is the wrong word but I have had too much wine to remember the correct one) there, but I am not sure how an overseas student who is paying £18K a year is going to feel about their halls neighbour.

It could potentially damage the reputation of the university abroad if it is known.

The planning application is for change of use. Students and asylum seekers will not live together

Apolgies, @Comefromaway . I had not seen your post

I clearly missed the event when 18 yo freshers from down the road sexually assaulted 1200 women in one night as happened in Germany in a recreation of the mass scale sexual assaults we see in places like Egypt. Places where almost 90% of men admit to having sexually harassed women in public because it's 'fun' according to studies like the one conducted by UN Women.

Women are not publicly raped in broad daylight by mobs consisting of literally hundreds of men in Western cities. This only happens in the middle east - well, until recently. This isn't opinion it's documented fact.

You clearly missed the words I quoted and to which I responded, which were 'catcalling' and 'harassment'. Female students do experience these things from their peers, the male students.

1apenny2apenny · 12/09/2025 23:10

Oh yes great plan, let’s make students (well their parents) pay thousands for accommodation whilst young men arrive and are housed for free including all healthcare, food etc.

Where are they supposed to go? Into unused army barracks/old buildings converted (quickly and basically) into bunk rooms with basic kitchens and laundry. The most basic accommodation with basic food etc.

See my point about 90% of men in four of the biggest middle eastern countries admitting to sexual harassment 'because it's fun'.

No. Western men don't treat women as bad as men from the places that stone women to death and don't let them out the house.

You do know what people want to happen. They dont want them here at all.

Rwanda? 🤣

Or back to France?

Comefromaway · 12/09/2025 23:50

Brexit removed our right to send them back to France.

Maybe we can also remove their right to come here?

Detention camps in remote locations such as the Scottish islands or Saddleworth Moor. We are making it far too easy and pleasant for them when they break into our country.

Comefromaway · 13/09/2025 00:25

I never want to remove the right of people to seek asylum.

Western men don’t treat women as bad? What are you going to do next? Start reciting white man’s burden to us? Honestly utter nonsense that people come out with these days especially given the largest female sex trafficking ring was ran by a group of very powerful and influential western men.

This is an issue that could be handled by local politics, possibly councils. There are obviously lots of people who want to house and pay for illegal immigrants in their areas, house them in those areas with consent and fund it through council tax or another local tax. It would put an end to the constant arguments.

wonder how many people on this thread would volunteer to take illegal migrants into their own home?

Exactly, why should the students who live here and will pay for their accommodation on the Campus lose out to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place.

SouthernFashionista · 13/09/2025 07:47

Of course it’s not appropriate.

Would you all be happy to have your daughter living in the midst of unvetted men from god knows where?

Might help university finances

It won’t. This is a private company that owns student accommodation in various places. It’s for people who don’t want, or miss out on, the university owned accommodation. Basically they own some accommodation that they rent to students, now they might rent it to the government.

And no students will be there at the same time.
