Government putting asylum seekers in student accomodation

There is an article saying that the University of Leeds in Headingly is being used to house asylum seekers, I don't know if there are any further plans elsewhere.
It seems to me inappropriate to use student accomodation, I hope it will not be rolled out to other Uni's.

Fury in leafy suburb over plans to turn student halls into migrant accommodation

'Making student flats migrant homes will make street a battleground'

House-holders living near Mary Morris House in Shire Oak Road, in the Headingley area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, are divided over the bombshell announcement.

@lljkkBibby Stockholm was neither leaky nor a prison, it had been used to accommodate homeless people and assylum seekers in other European countries but it wasn’t considered an adequate way for UK to meet its legal obligations to people who had claimed assylum - it got a bad rap so it was felt using crumbling hotels with no cooking facilities in hostile communities was a better idea. Now the hotels have bad publicity so why not use student accommodation? I’m sure the owners just want the higher income that the government will undoubtedly pay, no skin of their nose who lives in them. Now the students will compete with locals to rent the dwindling private rented sector stock instead.

Yes so more pressure on the local housing

we are the end of the line so we can’t send them on

do other countries give them accommodation in the same way we do?

There could possibly be an argument for housing asylum seekers in very basic accomodation near to overseas student accomodation. Students overstaying their visas is a big cause of illegal immigration. It could be argued that if overseas students see how unwelcome illegal immigrants are, then they may be less tempted to over stay their visas.
I would not be surprised if overseas students will now be less tempted to study in the UK in the current climate anyway. Certainly in my city, England flags have been put up all around areas popular with students, in order to make a point that students in general, and particularly overseas students, are tolerated rather than welcomed.

Universities rely on overseas students to keep the Unis open. Their accommodation in some Unis is far superior and more expensive ( see Exeters for example)
The last thing Unis want to do is put them off so this suggestion will never work.

what area are you in ?

I thought Labour was going to house illegal immigrants in barracks ?
or is this aswell

Well France doesn’t thats why do many are in tents on the streets

no Wonder they tend to come here

i think the accommodation needs to be Spartan and if they don’t like it then they should leave the UK

Well, people don't want them in hotels, they don't want them in the HMO down the road, and they don't want them in the RAF base long closed down, so where else would they go?

Not around students who are studying hard to get a degree.

Well tbh that’s partly why I thought the barracks was to be used.

Keep it simple, inexpensive but it already exists and is empty.

Plus if it’s good enough for our armed forces it should be OK..so nothing for others to complain about.

I don’t know why this isn’t being furthered

Yes totally agree

my son was at uni and was in old army barracks type accommodation that he paid for

I agree LBet

So what was wrong with the barracks. Who complained and got that idea shut down @OverlyFragrant

When Bristol ran out of accommodation they repurposed shipping containers.
A lot of places don’t have accommodation for students and the rents are outrageous
Two in Exeter paying £188 and £190 per week. Another just outside London paying £700.

Competition for accommodation is mad so I hope this doesn’t happen anywhere else or it will be students in tents

Western men don’t treat women as bad? What are you going to do next? Start reciting white man’s burden to us? Honestly utter nonsense that people come out with these days especially given the largest female sex trafficking ring was ran by a group of very powerful and influential western men.

So you think life as a woman in Afghanistan would be comparable to the West?

Thanks
thats A problem atm wherever they are housed
perhaps the Govn need to look at both the location and how they are housed.

Perhaps certain freedoms need to be curtailed in the short term.
We would need to speed up the processing in order to do that
