Government putting asylum seekers in student accomodation

rriffraff · 12/09/2025 20:33

There is an article saying that the University of Leeds in Headingly is being used to house asylum seekers, I don't know if there are any further plans elsewhere.
It seems to me inappropriate to use student accomodation, I hope it will not be rolled out to other Uni's.

Fury in leafy suburb over plans to turn student halls into migrant accommodation

'Making student flats migrant homes will make street a battleground'

House-holders living near Mary Morris House in Shire Oak Road, in the Headingley area of Leeds, West Yorkshire, are divided over the bombshell announcement.

It’s not actively happening. It’s a plan.

I don’t know what people want to happen? They want the hotels to close, so this is proposed, and people get angry?

Fabrikick · 12/09/2025 20:39

Well people wanted them out of hotels, surely other property options being explored is the next step? Did people think they would vanish whilst being processed? It looks like its a private provider rather than university owned, suspect its more lucrative for them and they surely must have signalled an interest at some point.

OverlyFragrant · 12/09/2025 20:41

Well, people don't want them in hotels, they don't want them in the HMO down the road, and they don't want them in the RAF base long closed down, so where else would they go?

Where are the students supposed to go

It’s pretty obvious what people want to happen. They fail to appreciate that if the government were more efficient at processing applications, so much accommodation wouldn’t be needed at all.

Iguessicoulddothat · 12/09/2025 20:44

Every other building going up in Leeds atm is student accommodation, suspect they'll be fine

Lots of these privately owned and managed blocks are struggling now their overpriced yet low quality model doesnt work as well with falling student numbers. I am sure the universities in Leeds can put forward their concerns if they have them to the council who is simply considering the request at this stage.

Missey85 · 12/09/2025 20:46

What's the big deal? Would you rather they slept at the park? 😡

lljkk · 12/09/2025 20:50

Foreign student numbers have plummeted at many Unis for diverse reasons, so I suspect there is a surplus of student accommodation. Given most the AsylSeekers are young people, I can see this being quite suitable.

Did OP say why "not appropriate"?

Did you want them to be imprisoned stay on leaky barges instead?

lljkk · 12/09/2025 20:53

ps: I hugely hope that some journalists are keeping track of many As.Seeker hotels right now, and will go back in 12-36 months to see what has happened to the building & if locals are happy about it.

I am predicting boarded up empty vandalised eyesores will be the future of the buildings until they get converted to flats or knocked down to become carparks. But... let's see.

Sesma · 12/09/2025 21:00

They mainly vote Labour there anyway so probably happy about it

People might not have realised that the only 2 options, when people arrive without permission by the tens of thousands, is for the tax payer to put them up in either hotels or student accommodation.

It’s pretty obvious what people want to happen. They fail to appreciate that if the government were more efficient at processing applications, so much accommodation wouldn’t be needed at all.

The fact the processing was paused for so long while the Rwanda plan appeals were dealt with has also had a large impact on the accommodations needed.

GwendolineWindowlene · 12/09/2025 21:20

Didn’t this already happen to some Huddersfield Uni accommodation?

Charlize43 · 12/09/2025 21:24

I think they will be well assimilated (this is the wrong word but I have had too much wine to remember the correct one) there, but I am not sure how an overseas student who is paying £18K a year is going to feel about their halls neighbour.

It could potentially damage the reputation of the university abroad if it is known.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 12/09/2025 21:26

Well having seen the cat calling and harassing I would not be happy if my dd was a neighbour in such accommodation

I expect you'll find 18 year old freshers from down the road behave this way too.

1apenny2apenny · 12/09/2025 21:38

The first question that should have been/should be asked after the announcement regarding not using hotels is where the government are putting the asylum seekers. It was obvious that they had to be put somewhere and that there was no where available that would be palatable to the public. This government are so thick that they will now just say ‘well we ended using hotels for asylum seekers’. This is going to explode. These men are now being placed in HMOs and student accommodation and I suspect this will be at greater cost to the taxpayer in terms of not only money but societal unrest.

The failure to deal with this head on, and honestly, is a huge mistake by the government.

ThatWaryOchreQuoter · 12/09/2025 22:04

This is an issue that could be handled by local politics, possibly councils. There are obviously lots of people who want to house and pay for illegal immigrants in their areas, house them in those areas with consent and fund it through council tax or another local tax. It would put an end to the constant arguments.

Toddlerteaplease · 12/09/2025 22:17

Wouldn’t be surprised. My city has loads of brand new blocks. I doubt many of them are full. They have to go somewhere.

MissMoneyFairy · 12/09/2025 20:42

There is loads of student accommodation in Leeds. They are building some lovely new ones. A lot of student accommodation in Leeds is done through Unipol & they are a really good company to deal with with a robust code of practice.

I’d never heard of these particular halls & I’ve looked at lots online so I imagine they aren’t that popular/well known etc.

NotMyNigelFarage · 12/09/2025 22:21

Kohll · 12/09/2025 21:28

I clearly missed the event when 18 yo freshers from down the road sexually assaulted 1200 women in one night as happened in Germany in a recreation of the mass scale sexual assaults we see in places like Egypt. Places where almost 90% of men admit to having sexually harassed women in public because it's 'fun' according to studies like the one conducted by UN Women.

Women are not publicly raped in broad daylight by mobs consisting of literally hundreds of men in Western cities. This only happens in the middle east - well, until recently. This isn't opinion it's documented fact.

I doubt everyone in an area would support this

There won’t be students in there. The proposal is for a change of use. This particular, not very well known halls is private. Leeds Uni own their own halls, Leeds Becket, Conservatoire & Arts mostly use Unite & Unipol.
