Southampton publishes Clearing grade requirements

I think this is the first time I've seen an RG Uni publishing Clearing grade requirements before Results Day.

It's not for all courses but a lot of popular subjects nonetheless

https://www.southampton.ac.uk/clearing/course-vacancies?subject=All+Subjects&filter=&studentType=uk&availableOnly=true

Not sure what it means for those students holding offers at Southampton - does it indicate how far they can drop grades and still get in?

It's quite interesting that the unis show different grade drops for the same subjects.

Warwick has dropped to BBB for History but kept at AAB for Politics.

Whereas York has dropped Politics to BBC but kept History at ABB.

Liverpool has also dropped History to BCC but English is still at BBC despite the general drop in popularity of English.

Understandable when a university has a particular reputation in a subject (Warwick doesn't have Maths in clearing, obviously) but maybe not in these cases?

I thought Warwick had an excellent reputation for History given the rating in the league tables? But maybe even more so for Math? Good luck today to everyone's DC! I'll be following closely but feel a bit more reassured that it will be ok next year

Piggywaspushed · 14/08/2025 07:56

Yes, Warwick is very highly sought after for history, politics , film, English as well as the maths stuff.

I have noticed recently that politics and IR have overtaken history in popularity at degree level. Oddly, though, at my school , politics has become less and less popular as an A level where other hums and the literary subjects have remained stable.

82% have their first choice, according to UCAS chief executive just now on R4 Today

😊

NeedingCoffee · 14/08/2025 08:48

I am looking forward to a deep dive into the stats and views from those in the sector over the coming weeks as to what was going on in terms of numbers and offer levels; for the moment, huge congratulations to all the DC who have a place they're happy with!

Not sure how useful this will be, but may help someone! (WonkHE is a very well
respected specialist HE publication btw, and this journalist is absolutely superb at data-y stuff.)

That’s really interesting, thank you for posting.

HPFA · 14/08/2025 09:25

Politics now gone from Warwick.

Good that they're keeping the lists updated - save people wasting their time.

Updated grades for Exeter:

https://vacancies.exeter.ac.uk/clearing

I can't see any grades here, am I missing something? Interested in History next year. Seems clearing places are only available at the Cornwall campus still which is interesting, had thought Exeter would have a few clearing places in the Streatham campus on the actual day

Does this page help?

It's a bit hidden - you have to check on each course and then it's right at the top of the insert under UK Entry Requirements.

Ah yes I can see it now, thank you. BCC for History, politics and similar subjects. Reduced from AAB I think. But only in the Cornwall campus

Fabfabfab · 14/08/2025 09:44

Durham is in clearing for History but can't see the grades. It just says 'open'. Bristol doesn't appear to be in clearing.

TizerorFizz · 14/08/2025 09:45

@pineisland We weren’t really talking about AAD though. It’s the fairly average CCC or below. The Dc with these grades are not necessarily the same as the AAA dc but how hard the subject is matters too. Are they best prep for the degree?

WombatChocolate · 14/08/2025 10:18

Exeter had History on Streatham campus earlier, but it must have filled already. Again shows the importance of being on the phones early.
Durham looks to only be taking students who meet the standard offer and not lowering what they will take.

Treeleaf11 · 14/08/2025 10:40

Durham clearing has all closed now

Waspie · 14/08/2025 10:58

Exeter Streatham had history at 8am at ABB (originally AAB). UCL still shows as AAA but Warwick is the big mystery- dropping from AAA to BBB in one go

Fabfabfab · 14/08/2025 10:59

NeedingCoffee · 14/08/2025 10:10

Not for History though unfortunately which is what DC is looking at (next year)

@Treeleaf11 where did you see the grades for Durham? When I look (for History) it still says 'Open' but no grades listed. So it's either the standard offer still, or they don't like to advertise that they drop the grades in clearing, or could be I'm terrible at IT and can't see it anywhere ;)

HPFA · 14/08/2025 11:02

Southampton have raised requirements slightly - History and English have gone to up to CCC.

I know some people are monitoring for decision- making next year so it's important to be aware grades aren't fixed.

Durham clearing has all closed now

Gosh, in my naivety I thought clearing didn't open until lunchtime. The UCAS website says "You can add a Clearing choice in your UCAS Hub from 13:00 (UK time) on 14 August (Level 3 results day)."

Luckily my DC got his reserve choice (Southampton) despite getting below his expected grades. He is feeling the disappointment of the grades but glad to have secured a place without needing to go through Clearing.

What is your DC studying at Southampton may I ask?

Civil Engineering.. It's a brilliant department - we preferred it to his first choice (Bristol), but the city is less appealing.

Waspie · 14/08/2025 11:14

Durham has history in clearing at standard offer grades of A star A A .
https://www.durham.ac.uk/study/undergraduate/offer/clearing/uk/
Bristol has ancient history in clearing but not history.

RattyMcBatty · 14/08/2025 11:20

Bristol has aist of courses in clearing but not the grades required - just shows the normal grades - or am I missing something?
