How much allowance to give when 18 year olds living at home?

My 18 year old DD is about to start at a local college and will be living at home (London). We want her to manage her own finances but realise she won't have time to work during term time. We'll pay for travel, phone, family holidays, college supplies and any food at home. How much weekly allowance should we give her for everything else? Any thoughts?

Our DD just turned 17 and starts college next week. To do an HNC so our child benefit has ended.

We have gone the opposite way to you - told her she now has to pay for her own riding lessons as that's what CB previously paid for.

She has a weekend job in a cafe, gets about 45 quid each week. Riding lesson 25 so that will leave her 20 of her earned money. Plus she will get a bit extra birthday/ Christmas. That will be it. We will not be giving any allowance.

Obvs she has her home here. Her phone is tethered onto DHs contract so she doesn't pay for her phone and bus travel here in Scotland is free for 17 yr olds.

Why can't your DD work evenings or weekends? Really, once they leave school, they need to start gently easing into paying their own way.

Our dd is living at home and we live close enough to the college for her to bus it in daily. I replied to your post assuming your DD is in a similar sitch
