Adding new thread as other full up!
For Bath query: Deadline is 1 July for guaranteed first year. It says on the website that it's randomly allocated according to stated preference and course status (don't know what that means). There's a lot of preferences! Not just catered/self catered and the building, but quiet/single sex/LGBTQ/additional requirements/even those with assistance animals!
It really wouldn't be fair to do it first come first serve unless they had all the offers out first (which they don't as we are still waiting).

No idea how to link threads if some one with better knowledge can? Thanks

Thanks for new thread, still waiting on Edinburgh and St Andrews here but no longer interested in St Andrews regardless. Unfortunately Edinburgh is top choice. Otherwise going to Glasgow, we went to offer holders day the other day and I actually preferred it to Edinburgh but daughter prefers Edinburgh!

U of Bath's website sets out accommodation allocation procedure in detail (see link below, section 2.1).

My son just got his Edinburgh offer today so fingers crossed you hear soon.

Thanks for the new thread. DD still waiting for Warwick, after which she will be choosing firm and insurance from UCL, Birmingham and Warwick if they ever make a decision! Waiting nearly six months now 🤨
Haven't got round to finance yet.

Congratulations to your son, what subject was it for?

mondaytosunday · 29/03/2024 19:41

@stoneysongs we haven't gotten round to finance either. Don't feel huge urge to get it done yet - I know you don't have to wait but would rather know where's she's decided to go.,

Thank you. Maths and computing science

We were going to do the finance application this week but DD is still in two minds about whether to firm Edinburgh or Exeter. She wants to get everything sorted and an accommodation application in before she goes back to school after Easter, so she is going to have to find a way of separating them.

Her main pros for Edinburgh are:

  • loves the city
  • highly regarded uni
  • offers a year abroad
  • lots of research happening there

Main pros for Exeter are:

  • loves the course (specialises earlier)
  • offers a placement year
  • smaller cohort and supportive department
  • campus uni

I think she would love either and both are excellent unis. Anyone have any thoughts?

What subject, and how far apart are those unis in the rankings for the subject?

And also they are very far apart - how many hours are you from each and would this be a factor?

grafittiartist · 29/03/2024 21:24

Still waiting for Edinburgh too.
Really frustrating- aren't the offer holder days happening really soon?

Umbilicate · 29/03/2024 21:45

Dc at Edinburgh - loves it but honestly @PumpkinKnitter only your dc can make this pick, they’re both great unis. DM me if you have specific questions

PumpkinKnitter · 29/03/2024 21:48

@iwafs Neuroscience. Exeter is 4 hours by car or train. Edinburgh is over 6 hours by car or train, but much quicker and cheaper by plane. She isn’t bothered by the distance. Edinburgh is higher in subject rankings for biomedical science, but neuroscience as a course isn’t ranked. Exeter has very high student satisfaction, but Edinburgh's is improving.

aramox1 · 29/03/2024 21:54

Got a Glasgow offer here, cruelly three days after the sole offer holder day. Why do they do that?

My daughter is waiting on maths but with economics, we thought the maths talk at the open day was really engaging but i think it is Edinburgh the city itself that is the strongest pull for her. Starting to think it is unlikely an offer will come through for her now. Is your son home or RUK? We are Scottish so she already has her grades but doesn't seem to help at all!

Yeah I think there might be one next week but maybe another end of April, not sure though. Same with St Andrews!
Although I think people have had the same issue with Glasgow where they got their offer after the offer holder day which we attended last week.

grafittiartist · 29/03/2024 22:02

I have been wondering why the results are not just "released" from ucas in one set date.
No more daily checking of emails and constant wondering.

Scotland, my son is in s6 so also had his grades

Yes it is rubbish that some Glasgow offers came out after offer holders day.

Edinburgh OH days are 12 and 26 April, 26 not great for Scottish students as it’s ecam
season.

PumpkinKnitter · 29/03/2024 22:32

Thanks @Umbilicate. She has been messaging a friend’s daughter who is at Edinburgh and loves it. She has an extensive pros and cons list for each and it’s a dead heat!

mondaytosunday · 29/03/2024 22:36

@PumpkinKnitter also isn't it four years at Edinburgh vs three at Exeter? And placement years in addition? That's what put Glasgow out of the running for DD. Four years plus extra debt.
@aramox1 we went to the offer holder day this past week. DD liked the course lecture (better than Durham she said) and the 'vibe' plus Glasgow is a great city... but the distance and extra year has put it at the bottom of the list at the moment. If she was Scottish no brainer. But we are still waiting for Bath and LSE - offer days clash for those too and she said if they don't offer soon there'll be no room anyway!

OP posts:
PumpkinKnitter · 29/03/2024 23:19

@mondaytosunday Yes, four years at Edinburgh but she wants to do a year abroad which is an alternative to the third year. At Exeter the placement year would be an extra year, so also four years. Edinburgh would mean a higher loan but not massively so, unless she found a paid placement year through Exeter - I think it is more likely to be unpaid if she does a research year abroad which is what she would really like.

RefreshingCandour · 30/03/2024 08:33

@PumpkinKnitter she needs to decide what’s really important to her in a uni.

  1. Clear her mind of the two options.
  2. List up to 10 things that are important to her in a uni eg nightlife, course content, proximity to home etc. So eg nightlife most important rank it 10.
  3. Then rank these according to importance. If 10, then rank most important as 10, least as 1.
  4. Then score each option, so Edinburgh and Exeter 1-10 in terms of how they stack up against each criteria. So eg Edinburgh 8/10 for nightlife, Exeter 6/10 etc.
  5. Multiply each in each category so eg Nightlife Edinburgh 8 x 10 =80, Exeter 6 x 10 = 60.
  6. Add them all up.
  7. Voila! A winner.
Headingto18 · 30/03/2024 17:15

DD has given up on Edin - would be impossible to fit in now even if they did offer (she has never been there!) so has withdrawn and i think has narrowed things down after a great Durham offer holder day (has now submitted her college list)

Jaxx · 01/04/2024 13:14

Firmed Durham and insured Exeter.

He had offers from UCL and Leeds, but was rejected from Cambridge.
