Good news @JediKnightingale! We are going to Durham next week so will see about the 'posh vibes'. But my daughter smartly points out she's white and middle class and went to independent schools her whole life so she should fit right in!

speedyhedgehog · 14/03/2024 14:32

@jediknightingale yay! So happy for your ds! One of my ds's is at southampton and really happy there!

Oddly, children with that demographic often cite the "posh" concern most vociferously. Grin

As being a problem, I mean.

Just to encourage anyone waiting to hear from UCL for Economics. My daughter received an offer for Economics from UCL yesterday. Praise God! That completed it now. We can't thank God enough. Economics Trinity College Cambridge, Economics Warwick, Economics Bristol and yesterday Economics UCL. Rejection from LSE for Economics citing personal statement. Yet, these 4 Unis offered her a place with the same personal statement. Congratulations to everyone with offers, wishing good luck to all that are still waiting. Even if any rejection comes, it can knock one down but try and get up because more offers will come.

economicsapp · 14/03/2024 18:52

@SuccessM well done to your DD - amazing news!

SuccessM · 14/03/2024 20:17

@economicsapp Thanks a lot! Best wishes!

DS was extremely happy today as he got an offer from Southampton for Computer Science. It’s a pretty high offer but doable. His aim was to get a top 10 CS uni and was losing hope - really pleased for him. Looking like Southampton firm and York Insurance.

He was rejected from Bath but that was no surprise this year - the competition was insane. Waiting on St As and Durham - although he has now ruled out Durham even if he gets an offer after being put off by the ‘Posh school vibes’ whatever that means!

Great news, @JediKnightingale ! My DS was also rejected from Bath for Comp Sci last night, but totally expected as he already had a rejection from Durham last week. He's feeling fine about it, as am I - I'm not sure they would have been great fits for him. We went to a Sheffield offer holiday day a couple of weeks ago and it was fantastic. He had a great time, I was really impressed and I think he would have a really good student experience there without the downsides that Durham and Bath would have brought (namely accommodation issues). He also has a similar offer from York so is going to put Sheffield as his first choice, York as insurance.

Good luck for the rest of the process.

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/03/2024 14:09

@catmomof3 and any other UCL peeps - after lots of to and fro, UCL accom confirmed that they are indeed switching to first come first served (see below).

Yes will be allocating on first come first serve basis where the date you submit your application is taken into consideration. If your application is selected within the first batch of allocations you will get an offer sooner if you meet the eligibility criteria.

stoneysongs · 15/03/2024 15:37

Oh that's not good UCL news - DD has an offer and may well firm but still waiting to hear from Warwick and hopefully attend an offer holder day there before deciding Confused

PumpkinKnitter · 15/03/2024 15:49

DD got an offer through today from Edinburgh for neuroscience. So pleased for her as it is where she really wants to go. Now she just has to choose between Exeter and Bristol for insurance. Likely to be Exeter I think because accommodation at Bristol is too risky, but she will go to the offer holder days before deciding.

Umbilicate · 15/03/2024 15:55

Congratulations @PumpkinKnitter - I said the Edinburgh offers are about to start flooding in! What a good start to the weekend.

FebuarySmith · 15/03/2024 15:57

@Revengeofthepangolins That’s a weird policy. Wonder if they’ve made all their offers by the time accommodation submissions go live. We were waiting for an offer holder event but DD might have to arrange a prompt stay instead with a friend already studying there as really wants to get a feel for how good/awful London uni life is.

FebuarySmith · 15/03/2024 16:14

Is it logical then to apply for accommodation and then withdraw the application if the decision is made not to firm UCL.

lifeturnsonadime · 15/03/2024 16:14

Another UCL offer holder here. DS is going to an offer holders day next week. I will try to get him to ask some questions about when it's going to go live. He is ever so relaxed about it all which is good but he has already firmed (before the offer holder) and I want him to sort as soon as possible.

lifeturnsonadime · 15/03/2024 16:15

I don't think it's possible unless you firm?

I think you need to put information on the application that shows you've done that. But I might stand corrected. It would potentially be chaos otherwise.

Or can one only apply after selecting as firm ie that’s when they provide the link etc to book.It must be, that would be most logical.

Umbilicate · 15/03/2024 16:20

BTW DC has a UCL offer. The website says everyone meeting suitable criteria (that is basically being a full-time student) who applies by June 10 should be guaranteed accommodation so don't worry about being homeless if you don't firm just yet ...

stoneysongs · 15/03/2024 16:21

Some places do let you apply for accommodation before firming / insuring I think - maybe Liverpool iirc? I will get DD to check whether she can apply yet or not.

stoneysongs · 15/03/2024 16:24

Just checked the UCL website and you can only apply for accommodation if you have firmed 😔

Get a bloody move on, Warwick!

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/03/2024 16:42

And yes, everyone eligible for UCL accom is guaranteed accom if they apply by June 10th so no homeless risk!

Revengeofthepangolins · 15/03/2024 16:44

And agree that isn't very helpful. The old system of random processing as long is by the guarantee date (which used to be in mid May whcih still caused the occasional problem) was better and fairer

MerchSwyddEfrog · 15/03/2024 16:49

We are still waiting for UCL! Luckily my ds isn’t that keen anyway. I wish they would just hurry up and let us know either way. He applied in October.

stoneysongs · 15/03/2024 17:06

It's bad enough they're opening accommodation applications while people are waiting for other offers - doing it before they've finished making their own offers is a bit cheeky!

lifeturnsonadime · 15/03/2024 17:10

Thanks for the heads up that the portal is open. You don't appear to be able to make a preference based on location (closeness to Bloomsbury or to the other campus if out there) though which is odd according to the website, perhaps you can on the portal. I'll try to get DS to look at it this weekend. As he has already firmed he should really get on with it.
