Has anyone heard from Edinburgh yet?

My daughter got her unconditional early Jan. Quite a few offers from Edinburgh are in amongst her peers but we are based in Scotland. Fingers crossed you hear soon.

BiancaBlank · 12/03/2024 15:12

Still waiting for Edinburgh here

Delphigirl · 12/03/2024 15:49

And here!

PumpkinKnitter · 12/03/2024 17:45

Also waiting for Edinburgh

FebuarySmith · 12/03/2024 17:57

UCL English offer today.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 12/03/2024 18:14

Still waiting for Edi here too, my son has 5 As at higher but he’s applied for a popular course. He’s thinking of just withdrawing and accepting one of his unconditionals

Twickenham7 · 12/03/2024 18:22

Also waiting for Edinburgh! History here

Umbilicate · 12/03/2024 18:26

Don’t withdraw @TooOldForThisNonsense - it really won’t be long now!

Headingto18 · 12/03/2024 18:45

Waiting for Edin too - DD wants to firm and insure so not sure she is going to wait it out as is fairly convinced they are going to let the majority of those still waiting to simply lapse in May

Rollergirl11 · 12/03/2024 18:54

Where is she thinking of firming and insuring @Headingto18?

Headingto18 · 12/03/2024 19:24

Durham for firm nad then prob KCL for insurance

listsandbudgets · 12/03/2024 19:26

I think DD is very close to firming and insuring as well - looking like Nottingham and Sussex but she's decided to wait just a bit longer in case her feelings change but honestly I don't think they will.

One of her friends has 5 identical offers... another who everyone expected to walk in everywhere has non at all - 4 rejections and waiting on one and no one can understand it - predicted all As and A*s for 4 A levels, done EPQ, has a string of 8s and 9s at GCSE and does lots of things outside school, bilingual .. and one of the nicest girls you could ever hope to meet. The world is very strange sometimes... =I'm gutted for her and we've all got everything crossed for an offer from last uni Sad

Cremebrulee45 · 12/03/2024 19:27

Also still waiting on Edinburgh!

Smartysmitty · 12/03/2024 19:34

Waiting for Glasgow here, a university that hasn't come up much on this thread. Curious about why Edinburgh seems so much more popular when the universities seem similarly ranked? Maybe it's to do with the standing of particular courses? Interested to know!

Headingto18 · 12/03/2024 19:41

@listsandbudgets that sounds really tough for the friend; it is an odd process sometimes. Re offers - DD also has identical offers so her insurance is not really an insurance….

mondaytosunday · 12/03/2024 19:57

@Smartysmitty we are heading up to the offer day at Glasgow week after next (when we will be at Durham). It does rank higher for her subject than Edinburgh (Sociology), and has the beautiful old buildings she finds so attractive and aligns with her idea of a university aesthetic. They also offered within 24 hours of application going in (she already has three A stars) which was reaffirming.
I think Edinburgh looked (on paper anyway) like a Scottish Bristol, which she didn't like at all. Her hesitation was because, as you say; you hear Edinburgh mentioned a lot even though Glasgow is very well respected too, and 'name brand' is a factor.
I believe you have to pay tuition for all four years at Edinburgh but only first three at Glasgow.

BiancaBlank · 12/03/2024 20:11

DD3’s offers are all identical as well, so it’s a question of trying to work out which one would be most likely to take her if she drops a grade! Even if she gets an offer from Edinburgh, it’s likely to be higher, so I’m not sure it would be in the running.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 12/03/2024 22:34

Umbilicate · 12/03/2024 18:26

Don’t withdraw @TooOldForThisNonsense - it really won’t be long now!

I think in reality he’s too nosey to withdraw, even if he doesn’t take it if he gets an offer!

TiaSeeya · 13/03/2024 06:41

Glasgow is a fantastic uni & city. It’s often forgotten by the Southern English IMO. Because it’s not a chocolate box tourist city like Edinburgh, York or Bath.

The 3 year fee cap at Glasgow is ending from 2024/25 I believe sadly.

TenSheds · 13/03/2024 07:58

Glasgow is a lovely university in an arty, green part of the city, and the courses seem very flexible. Sadly DD immediately took a dislike to the city at open day, not helped by hot weather discomfort and a new-in-post tutor whose presentation wasn't great, so it was out of the running from the off. It's a great option though and should really be more popular.

TheOnlyMrsW · 13/03/2024 08:36

Glasgow is a great city, DH is from there and love to visit, although in nearly 17 years I don't think that it's ever been warm enough to be uncomfortable in any season, you must have chosen a good weekend @TenSheds 😉 I was a bit surprised that DD didn't apply there but I think the 4 year element put her off. I know that with A Levels you can go straight into the 2nd year but she was worried that there would be established groups from 1st year and would struggle to be involved.

lastdayatschool · 13/03/2024 08:46

DS put off from applying to Glasgow for Sept 23 entry due to the accommodation problems that were reported in the media the previous year.

Is this still a problem or was it a one off due to the 'covid intake' year

1st years are guaranteed accommodation if they apply before the deadline. For subsequent years they just have to be quick off the mark I think - I can see flats on Gumtree advertised for July entry for around £180 / week

lastdayatschool · 13/03/2024 19:42

@StoorieHoose yes, sounds very similar to other universities, e.g. Durham, where the accommodation problems of a couple of years ago were a blip due to covid.

glasgowguardian.co.uk/2022/08/11/first-year-students-in-limbo-as-university-takes-away-accommodation-guarantee/ is the article I remember reading about Glasgow - telling 1st years not to enrol if they didn't have accommodation

JediKnightingale · 14/03/2024 12:17

DS was extremely happy today as he got an offer from Southampton for Computer Science. It’s a pretty high offer but doable. His aim was to get a top 10 CS uni and was losing hope - really pleased for him. Looking like Southampton firm and York Insurance.

He was rejected from Bath but that was no surprise this year - the competition was insane. Waiting on St As and Durham - although he has now ruled out Durham even if he gets an offer after being put off by the ‘Posh school vibes’ whatever that means!
