St Andrews

Happy new year to all 2024 St Andrews hopefuls!

Gearing up for a few months worrying about DS’s UCAS Uni offers. His first choice is St Andrews, then Exeter, Durham, Glasgow and he has had an offer from Newcastle. All for Classical Studies (always small cohorts). He’s at an independent school in Scotland on a scholarship, and predicted 3 As. He’s also contextual as a young carer, helping to look after me (I have MS and, this year, breast cancer). I desperately want him to get some good offers as I am feeling terribly guilty about the level of impact the caring has had on him and his studying both practically and emotionally.

Hoping St Andrews might give us an early ish offer as a home contextual, but nothing yet, though they have been in touch late Dec to say his carer status has been verified. There are so many applying with A star grades though, so not sure how his application will go.

Would love to hear of any St As offers coming through.

Good luck! Only (up to) six more weeks or so to go…😬

Thank uou, good luck to your son too. My daughter has decided against St Andrews as she thinks she might struggle to fit in and is worried about accommodation from 2nd year but would still be nice to say she got an offer!

Physics rejection on Good Friday. UK student. Edinburgh it is then instead

Innisfree · 05/04/2024 16:33

It’s the offer holder day tomorrow and DS is still waiting to hear from St Andrews. So tough, especially when revising for exams. Looks like there’s only been a handful of offers this week.

Also waiting for 1/2 St A places. It is hard to know whether that means they’re on a maybe list or if they just haven’t got their rejection yet.

I think it’s the former, though that doesn’t make the waiting any easier. I’d say there’s a 50/50 chance of an offer from here on in though, which is better than the 25% offer rate! It all depends who does what after offer holder day, bearing in mind Edinburgh offer holder day isn’t until near end of April and I think quite a few people will be waiting until after that to firm.

Still waiting here too for Computer Science. DD was turned down by Edinburgh which she really wanted. Doesn't really think that she'll get St A's now.

Innisfree · 09/04/2024 00:01

DS was saying quite a lot of applicants still waiting are contextual/young carer, like him. They’re chatting on TSR. Thought that was interesting, can’t be a coincidence.

DS still waiting for the CS. Not sure when St Andrew's will make their decisions for the remaining applicants.

Innisfree · 11/04/2024 16:20

This week has been very quiet. A few rejections here and there but not heard of any offers.

My DC still hasn’t heard. Is waiting for Physics but is last choice as has applied for Engineering elsewhere. Has heard back from everywhere else and has unconditional for top choice so not too fussed but does want to know if will get an offer.

Only just seen this thread. My dd put in her UCAS application about 26 Jan and had an offer from St A on 20 Feb at their standard A level offer (AAB) - she's predicted AstarBB so it had been a punt - for one of the (least popular I suspect) MFL with year abroad (ie 5yr course). She's RUK, possibly WP. Went to the offerholder day last weekend and she loved it - course is less 'literary' than she thought, more cultural modules available which is good from her viewpoint. So I think highly likely to firm.

Going to tease you here - we spotted a 'celebrity' there too with their child. Not royal!

Also at least one celeb (not royal) with child there already. But it’s the student who gets driven around in a Bentley that gets the most attention (not in a good way!).

periodiclabel · 12/04/2024 19:19

I heard from several friends who went about the celeb! shows how small SA is that everyone spotted them

Innisfree · 13/04/2024 11:12

Who was the celeb?

OP posts:
PaulAnkaTheDoggo · 13/04/2024 11:26

We didn’t see any celebs when we were there. Can’t say I was paying too much attention to the other parents though. Intrigued now…

periodiclabel · 13/04/2024 12:18

Don’t think it’s fair to out them …

Don’t think it’s fair to out them …

Waits for the Tweet to pop up from whoever moaning that they hung around St Andrews for an entire day recently and nobody anywhere on social media has name-dropped them yet?Shock

But no, this would have been their offspring's day as an offer holder, not yet another photo op for the parent, whoever they were.

LookingFab · 14/04/2024 00:32

The smallness was what dd liked - her schools have been small (we live in a rural county) and StA said all the lecturers will know them - less than 10 in the dept and about 45 students per year on that course. Not the place for anonymity.

She's also been in touch with someone she knows through a sport that is there, to ask about accommodation - she must be keen as this is out of her comfort zone behaviour - and got some really helpful info back.

neveradullmoment99 · 14/04/2024 00:53

My dd got an offer a while back. She's doing Italian and Spanish MFL.
She got an unconditional.

Innisfree · 18/04/2024 18:35

DS rejected today by St Andrews. Disappointing after waiting so long, but c’est la vie. He’s firmed Exeter, which he loves, and insured Glasgow.

OP posts:
PaulAnkaTheDoggo · 18/04/2024 18:40

Ah sorry to hear them at OP. At least he knows now though and can plan and get excited for where he is going.

poetryandwine · 18/04/2024 18:47

Sorry to hear that OP. How is he doing?

MintyFurball · 18/04/2024 19:00

My DC was rejected today too. At least can get on with accepting top choice now!

Sorry to hear that OP. How is he doing?

He’s ok, I think I’m more annoyed. I think he was relieved just to know one way or another. He seems very buoyant about Exeter, and coincidentally we had an offer holder Classics talk tonight which was excellent. He loved it!

Exeter is a lovely place to study
