St Andrews

Happy new year to all 2024 St Andrews hopefuls!

Gearing up for a few months worrying about DS’s UCAS Uni offers. His first choice is St Andrews, then Exeter, Durham, Glasgow and he has had an offer from Newcastle. All for Classical Studies (always small cohorts). He’s at an independent school in Scotland on a scholarship, and predicted 3 As. He’s also contextual as a young carer, helping to look after me (I have MS and, this year, breast cancer). I desperately want him to get some good offers as I am feeling terribly guilty about the level of impact the caring has had on him and his studying both practically and emotionally.

Hoping St Andrews might give us an early ish offer as a home contextual, but nothing yet, though they have been in touch late Dec to say his carer status has been verified. There are so many applying with A star grades though, so not sure how his application will go.

Would love to hear of any St As offers coming through.

Great 👏🏻

Ds has withdrawn his St Andrews application and accepted Edinburgh so that's it finalised 😱

Fantastic …. What an adventure it’s going to be for them all

The Student Room is showing a lot of rejections coming out today from St Andrews. Still tumbleweed for DS. Really hoping a rejection isn’t coming…

Rejection for econ today. Not surprised given the wait between offers to class mates having been made weeks ago.

Sorry to hear that. This seems to have been a tough year for economics applicants…very very popular subject.

I haven’t heard of any classical studies offers to other home students. But it is quite niche.

DD got an offer, unconditional, non-contextual, Scottish student. StA was a last minute long shot but it’s paid off. Still waiting on Edin although I think StA may be a better fit for her, smaller Uni, much better student support, but will be her decision at the end of the day.

Yesterday and it’s for anthropology. I’d heard StA puts great store on the PS and that would seem to be the case for DD as her grades are solid not super high, but her PS was definitely her own words!

Innisfree · 21/03/2024 21:49

That’s fantastic @Dotdashdash congratulations to her. I did Social Anthropology as one of my subjects in 1st year at St Andrews, many moons ago. Absolutely loved it.

Tense wait here, DD currently on a gap year, applied for 2 courses Anthropology & Modern History/IR. Grades in hand, non contextual RUK. This is second attempt, last year rejection for Mod History/IR came through this week 😱 she’s holding unconditional from Durham & Bristol but would dearly love St Andrews, I also went there and genuinely loved it.

legobrickseverywhere · 22/03/2024 11:12

Good luck to those waiting. Seems to be some movement going on from St A. But not all subjects for RUK.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 24/03/2024 21:30

Last summer my dad and her best friends went to a St Andrews tour day. There was a 1 hour walk with a student ambassador and then a 45 minute talk with the head of admissions. The head of admissions was incredible and told us everything we needed to know.

my did has an unconditional which we are obviously accepting and it is ABSOLUTELY ALL ABOUT THE PERSONAL STATEMENT. Never follow your guidance teacher rules that paragraph one needs to be about…and then talk about how you are a prefect, and your volunteer work in Kenya. … that is not what St Andrews wants. All the things you were told to do… St Andrews doesn’t care. They want a non formula personal statement. My DD got an unconditional and she isn’t even a prefect at her completely average state high school

Rejections seem to be coming thick and fast today from St Andrews. DS is checking his email every 5 minutes. It’s really so tough for them. I don’t know of any home offers for Classics though, only rejections, so don’t know what to think.

History rejection today - RUK.

So sorry. Hope your young person feels ok, I do think it’s a lot to take in. DS was ok about being rejected by Durham last week though, it was me that was more annoyed - the cheek of them, rejecting my little angel!

He has York, Warwick and Nottingham, but none of these he fell in love with. Rejected by Cambridge and St Andrews now.
Of the three offers he liked York the most, but his sister went to York.
Whilst she was very happy at York, she struggled to get graduate job after, so she is saying to go to Warwick!

@BathshebaKnickerStickers to be fair haven't heard any school saying that! Shame if yours did. Advice was only stuff related to showing passion for the subject, with maybe a couple sentences at the end about other stuff. Congrats on the offer!

WhenTheRollIsCalledUpYonder · 25/03/2024 14:27

We're waiting anxiously for a response to DD's neuroscience application. The waiting is tortuous! We're RUK...

My daughter’s school specifically said not to use the word passion at all..!

AgualusasLover · 25/03/2024 17:20

Oh gosh, we are history. Feel a bit sick. He does have a very achievable Edinburgh offer that he is very happy with but still…

Twickenham7 · 25/03/2024 20:26

Modern History rejection today for DD

grafittiartist · 25/03/2024 20:41

Rejection today.
Oh dear.
Good luck those still waiting.

Chaotica · 25/03/2024 21:07

Sorry to hear about the rejections. I think I'm expecting one for DD by now. But I guess I live in hope.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 25/03/2024 21:30

I work in a primary school. We are rejecting applications at the moment. The rejections start at age 4 and we still get them at 18.

may all your wombles have fantastic adventures going forward. I had an amazing university experience at Stirling 1990-1994

Averywavery · 25/03/2024 22:40

Still not heard back here but has decided against St Andrews regardless due to accommodation issues for 2nd year (don't think she would handle the pressure too well) and some feedback from current 1st year students where she thinks her personality type might not be right for St Andrews. Hoping for an Edinburgh offer but if a rejection will be heading to Glasgow 😊

Sorry meant to add, congratulations to those with offers and sorry to hear about those with disappointing rejections, so much pressure at an already difficult time of year with exam stress building up.
