That's brilliant news! Well done to your dc.

Yes to the nice surprises - Glasgow interview UCAT 2750 not contextual and not Scottish - we are amazed and delighted
feels like there’s a more level playing field this year which is great

Wonderful , congratulation. hopefully this is the first of many .

We having the first interview next week, excited and worried at same time!

Mumofboys2006 · 01/12/2023 12:13

Fab news @ipredictariot5 🎉!!

We too have some good news to share: DS has an interview at BSMS - thanks again to everyone who helped with their scoring system!

Interview isn’t until next year. sGUL interview is on Monday 🤞🏼🤞🏼

And we are still waiting on Birmingham and Bart’s 😬🤞🏼

Notcontent · 01/12/2023 12:18

Congratulations everyone!!!

We are also waiting for Barts and UCL. I think it would be much easier if all the universities notified applicants at roughly the same time. This system just adds to the stress.

Sybill · 01/12/2023 12:59

Brilliant news @ipredictariot5 - these are the type of surprises we like!!

And such great news on BSMS @Mumofboys2006 - your DS must be delighted!! Good luck for SGUL interview next week

Sybill · 01/12/2023 13:46

@Notcontent yes, I wonder if a more centralised approach would help? It is hard - one if DDs friends has only heard back from one so far and that was a rejection and yet her application is really strong so she should get 3 interviews for sure. She just doesn’t know yet so it’s a lot of uncertainty to have when everyone around you is moving on to interview stage (or in some cases, done an interview already)

Notcontent · 01/12/2023 14:10

Yes, exactly @Sybill i think medicine is a bit different to other courses as the number of places is so restricted so a more central system would help. Anything to make it less stressful and more transparent.

Waferbiscuit · 01/12/2023 19:26

DD also got an invite to interview to BSMS. It's her first choice so she's delighted. Good grades and did fairly well on her bmat but poorest bit was section 2 where she got a 4.7. Brighton claim you need a 6 in this section for entry, so she is genuinely surprised.

They double the score for paper 2 in their calculations, so you effectively need a 3 (for anyone else waiting to hear!).

Mumofboys2006 · 01/12/2023 19:58

Hi @Waferbiscuit the scoring isn’t based on BMAT raw scores so it’s effectively a 3 not a 6 you need. Well done to your DD too!
We really liked the medical school!

Waferbiscuit · 01/12/2023 22:30

Thanks @Mumofboys2006 I did not know that. Her total scoring using the way BSMS calculate it is 23.9 which seems pretty reasonable. Thx!

Notcontent · 04/12/2023 12:57

I told dd yesterday to stop looking on TSR as there are already people there with four interviews and people who have heard back from unis that she is still waiting on…. not good for her MH!!

Hope this week brings blood news for everyone!

Africa2go · 04/12/2023 12:58

@Notcontent - I think thats good advice (last year my DD never looked but I was obsessed with TSR and it really wasn't good for my mental health!!!)

Notcontent · 04/12/2023 13:09

yes @Africa2go - me too - I need to take my own advice!!!!

Sybill · 04/12/2023 18:18

I’ve been checking TSR for DD so she doesn’t have to!! It has been really helpful for knowing when interview offers were coming through - hopefully same for offers next year

DD has first interview next week so it’s starting to feel real now!

losingtheplot999 · 04/12/2023 20:14

Congratulations and good luck to everyone with all the interviews. DS2 has got a Cambridge interview next week and Leicester as well.

BerryHM · 05/12/2023 13:55

DS just received an invite to KMMS. His first one. Delighted 😁

losingtheplot999 · 05/12/2023 14:02

@BerryHM excellent news well done to him.

Sybill · 05/12/2023 14:46

That’s fantastic news @BerryHM well done him, and fingers crossed it goes well!

speedyhedgehog · 05/12/2023 20:31

Well done on all these interviews! Great to read.

Notcontent · 07/12/2023 10:55

Just read an article from last year that only 16% of applicants got into med in 2022. Feel a bit sick. But - would that statistic include people who don’t even get an interview?

opoponax · 07/12/2023 11:02

Yes that would include people who didn't get an interview. Also, there have been three quite crazy years in med applications but there are already signs this year that it is starting to settle a bit. UCAT cut-offs seem more sensible this year and look more like pre-pandemic levels.

speedyhedgehog · 07/12/2023 12:17

I think 2022 entry was a particularly crazy year. No one had expected A levels to be off for a second year. Universities over offered the year before and deferred students. Wait lists became a thing. It was a really tough year. I hope think and hope things have settled now.

MidLifeCrisis007 · 07/12/2023 12:21

@Notcontent - it was a really tough year for applicants.

Lots of students who might have missed their grades in a normal year, achieved them due to CAGS/TAGS meaning that the med schools had more successful applicants than places. Many were incentivised to defer eating into the quota available for the following year. Exeter had the biggest problem - it was well publicised.

LaMereDuChat · 07/12/2023 12:41

Hopefully it is calming a bit now and the Mexican wave of deferrals is lower for 2024. Having said that, dd is still waiting to hear from anyone...
