@LaMereDuChat - sorry a gap year is on the cards for you too.
My dd got rejected from all medical schools. Not even an interview. So she’s heading for a gap year too and hoping to apply again next year.
it’s brutal though. There has been so many tears and upset. It’s hard to console her. She’s been offered neuroscience at Sussex, and biomed at Exeter. She’s turned both down as just wants medicine 😔

LaMereDuChat · 26/03/2024 22:10

Sorry to hear that @tripadvice - it really is horrible, isn't it? Ah well - onwards. Dd seems to be relatively relaxed now she knows - I think the hope / waiting was the worst part.

speedyhedgehog · 27/03/2024 00:04

@mrs lights first year halls were expensive like everywhere. He had 5 choices to make and got the most expensive at chamberlain but really nice halls/room. Second year his house share is £550 a month inclusive of bills.
@barleypilaf sorry if he wasn't very accurate with the male/ female ratio! Most of his medic friends are also male so I can imagine him a) not paying much attention really and b) running through all the medics he knows and thinking their wasn't much in it. @nonottheotherone's stats will be far more reliable!
He really is happy there though and going to bat to get his sister to choose there, while her sister is on team scotland :)

speedyhedgehog · 27/03/2024 00:10

@lamereduchat and @tripadvice so sorry for the disappointment so far. It is such a hard process for them so young. They have done so well to even be in a strong enough position to apply.

But now that I think about it, all of the student helpers that we met or spoke to (apart from 1) was female

Might be a slightly different issue. Even if you had 75% male students the majority offering to do things like open days - especially at weekends - would be female. Over the past five years I have had about a dozen students who've regularly worked as ambassadors at open days, etc.,: only two are male. I do a lot of outreach activities with schools. If these are at weekends there will always be a tiny number of male pupils attending, while there will be reasonable numbers on weekdays.

I don't know about the new intake but my impression is that Exeter is fairly mixed M/F. I think that the offer day is probably to an extent self selecting for both offer holders (being organised and wanting to go to one) and helpers.

I wonder too if maybe there is an imbalance in who has multiple offers. If F regularly out perform M at interview then perhaps there are more of them with multiple offers attending offer days to narrow their choices.

I gained so much information from this forum last year . My DS is now a first year at Leeds, happy to help anyone if they want any information about the course or living in Leeds .

NoNotHimTheOtherOne · 27/03/2024 11:28

Exeter was 63% female in 2020. Again, this is fairly likely to have increased since then.

losingtheplot999 · 27/03/2024 14:16

DS2 has had an email from Leicester today to say that he is on the waiting list and will hear back by 17 May if there are any more spaces available. They are waiting to see if any of the ones who have been offered decline.

MMIMadness · 27/03/2024 16:36

DS has just had an email inviting him to an offer holder event at Cardiff!

I guess even though he withdrew they hadn't updated all their systems so it is quite nice to know that he had an offer there too and has chosen where he wants to go!

losingtheplot999 · 27/03/2024 19:10

Can anyone help with this? Do you have to firm and insure before you can choose accommodation. DS2 has had email from UCL to choose accommodation even though he hasn't firmed or insured. Also is it done on a first come basis?

Waferbiscuit · 27/03/2024 20:03

Anyone's DC heard from Lancaster? DD thought the interview went really well but she got on the reserve list. She has an offer from BSMS already (phew) but thought interview went poorly at BSMS and great at Lancaster - funny that!

Notcontent · 27/03/2024 20:07

@Waferbiscuit the interview that my dd thought was her best one was the one that resulted in a rejection. It’s so hard to tell.

You need to drum to book UCL accom. And annoyingly, for the first year they are doing it first come first served. The booking opened earlier this month. However, they guarantee accom to all who book by June 10th, so there is at least that

Revengeofthepangolins · 27/03/2024 20:52

Sorry - need to firm.

losingtheplot999 · 27/03/2024 21:16

Thank you @Revengeofthepangolins. That is annoying about having to firm UCL. DS2 is thinking of having it as his insurance.

Notcontent · 27/03/2024 21:22

@losingtheplot999 if UCL is to be your DS’s insurance, does he have another offer that requires even higher grades? UCL is AAA* I think?

losingtheplot999 · 27/03/2024 21:32

@Notcontent he has Cambridge Astar Astar A and contextual at UCL is AAB. He is waiting for KCL and has been told by Leicester today he is on wait list. I think he is going to firm Cambridge and insure UCL. Cambridge accommodation isn't decided on a first come basis so hoping he gets the grades so won't have to worry about accommodation.

Notcontent · 27/03/2024 22:29

@losingtheplot999 that makes sense - a very useful insurance to have!!

Hi 👋, which accomodation is your DS in? DD has an offer for Leeds and we have looked at the accomodation and see that Sentinel Towers is recommended for medical students, but the reviews aren’t great. It seems that the accomodation close to/on campus is very expensive, and I’m just wondering where is best. We are heading up to a campus experience day in April.
also, what kind of distance do they need to travel to placements and are they easy to get to?
(she is in the lucky position of being able to choose between Leeds and Birmingham and so we can afford to nit pick a little)

Hopeful646 · 28/03/2024 07:25

Hi @Medhopeful congratulations to your DD .
My DS is in Central village as are quite a few of his medical student friends . It's literally a 5 minute walk to the medical school where all lectures are . Cityside is also very close . He's been very happy at Central village good size room and great location .
Placements start after Christmas in year one just half a day . They are spread out at GP surgeries and other hospitals . Transport is provided for the hospital placements and they get public transport to the GP placements . He's had roughly a 30 minute journey time but there is always a group of them that travel together .
Happy to help with anything other questions .

mumsneedwine · 29/03/2024 08:49

Hope everyone ready for a nice Easter. And those students are studying hard as it all starts very soon after we come back. My lot were a bit stressed yesterday- so we ate donuts, drank coffee and played Taskmaster 😊.

Congratulations on all the offers. And for those without one, there is time to reflect and make decisions about next steps. No rush. Results day can mean an offer comes when least expect it. It's such a tough process it's hard to think about doing it again, but many do, and lots are successful 2nd time around.

But it's also ok to decide you don't want to do medicine anymore.

Happy Easter 🐣 . Enjoy the chocolate 🍫.

Thank you @mumsneedwine Enjoy your break also… you certainly deserve it!
Happy Easter all! 🐣

Mumofboys2006 · 29/03/2024 21:25

Hi all,

Hope everyone is having a lovely Easter bank holiday.

DS still hasn’t decided what to do with his two offers. Annoyingly we didn’t realise Bham only had limited places on the offer holder day - so even though his offer came really early we can’t go back to see the uni! Anyone with experience of accommodation there pls let me know.

SBBTOL · 30/03/2024 00:44

Hi, asking in case anyone knows how Sheffield reserve list works. We read their policy but couldn't find the answer that fits our case. DD has a firm and insurance choice already, so what should she do on UCAS regarding Sheffield? Does she have to withdraw from Sheffield? Is it possible to still remain on the reserve list as my understanding from their policy is there won't be any movements till results day anyway. If DD doesn't make the grade for both of her choices (they are the same A*AA), will she still be able to contact Sheffield? Many thanks

mumsneedwine · 30/03/2024 08:57

@SBBTOL Sheffield will reject her on UCAT in the next week or so. She can then firm and insure her choices, but she will no longer be on Sheffield's reserve list (they only keep students with no other offers - details are released to all Unis after deadline day).

If she doesn't make her other offers she could try calling Sheffield on results day but it's unlikely to be an offer then as they'll use their reserve list - they are very open about their policy on this.

Sorry that's not better news.
