@SuperSue77 NHS pay their fees for 5th year but this means they only get £1,900 minimum loan and a £1,000 NHS bursary. So be prepared to help out !

@Sybill we aren’t going. We are Spain based (but she’s a home student). She was dead set on London and only recently flipped to Exeter so we won’t get there. Do report back with what you think!

please may i ask how your dc can be spain based and a home student, is it a gap year

Tripadvice · 15/03/2024 21:02

@SuperSue77 - physiotherapy degrees are paid too.

@mumsneedwine - dd applied to Brunel yesterday for medicine via Extra. We have to wait and see if there’s a response. If not within a month then she can apply for a further one and so on.

this process is exhausting isn’t it

Some good news on a Friday evening: DS just got an offer from BSMS (via UCAS) 🙌🏼🙌🏼 AAA …good back up in case he doesn’t get an A* in anything

Mumofboys2006 · 15/03/2024 12:04

Fab news on all the offers! Our Bham offer is A*AA - so a bit higher than the others…anyone have a different offer from them?

My DS got an offer from UOB this week - contextual ABB.
from reading TSR threads we were convinced it was rejections this week - so huge relief, for us both(!)
he’s been waitlisted at Anglia Ruskin (but he didn’t like it there , however still felt hughely
dejected being waitlisted which is said is just a rejection.
not heard from uni of Leicester or uni of Nottingham. Has anyone else? DS wants to firm Birmingham I said wait for Leicester which he also loves . DS says accommodation will get snapped up? Offer holders day I think 22nd April for bham

Waferbiscuit · 15/03/2024 23:03

Congrats @Mumofboys2006

my DD also got an offer from BSMS and is thrilled. She does IB, for her sins, so needs to get a 6 in bio and chem and a minimum 36 overall. Phew!

Thanks for the heads up on Bham. DS got an offer too but said he can’t firm up until next week - so hopefully that will be ok …we hadn’t even thought of accommodation!🤪

Wondering if there’s an offer holders thread on TSR…

Well done to your DS!

Groundhogday2021 · 16/03/2024 07:35

Great news on all the offers this week! Well done 🎉

Notcontent · 16/03/2024 12:16

How does “firming” an offer work? Does it mean you could lose the offer if others “firm” before you? Just wondering as DD has two offers but still waiting for UCL.

mumsneedwine · 16/03/2024 12:26

@Notcontent no, there's no rush ! You firm one and Insure another. The offer will not be taken away even if you do it on the last possible day 😊

Thank you @mumsneedwine !

W0tnow · 16/03/2024 13:08

@clearblue2 we live here and are British citizens. We have been here since before December 2020 which means we are eligible. If you scroll down to the heading ‘UK nationals living in the EEA, Switzerland and EU overseas territories’, it’s the category we fall under. I was worried as I’d heard anecdotally that universities could take their own view regarding home fee status, but all 4 offers were home fees. We did have to provide supporting documentation though.

clearblue2 · 16/03/2024 17:15

@W0tnow amazing ! wishing all the best for your future medic. thank goodness there remains EU / British connection for medicine even in this era. Excellent to have got a A100 offer, rare like rainbow dust !!

W0tnow · 16/03/2024 17:37

Yes. volunteering was tricky, as she’s not fluent. And we are lucky that it applies to my other children, as there is an end date. Courses have to begin by 2027 I think.

Sybill · 17/03/2024 16:13

For @W0tnow and anyone else interested, DD and I had a trip to Exeter yesterday for offer holder day. Overall, a really positive one which has firmly cemented it in the top 2 for her. She really enjoyed the PBL class that they did - she wasn’t sure if she would enjoy that style of teaching at all but it energised her more than the sample lecture did (even though the lecturer was brilliant and very engaging). St Luke’s campus is lovely and very collegiate in feel, whilst Streatham (main campus) isn’t that far away and way bigger than I thought - reminded me of the American uni campuses, with lots going on. Just saw pictures of Truro, which looked nice and the academic staff were all very friendly. Liked how they have set out the course although the lack of dissection was a bit of a negative. But a good day (despite the rain)

As an aside, I was really surprised when DD told me about the many parents joining the session that was clearly stated as for students only. And according to my DD, some were taking up seats when students were left standing!! Thankfully they were asked to leave before it began but some did stay and hover a bit. Very odd

Groundhogday2021 · 17/03/2024 16:41

Thanks for the update on Exeter @Sybill
I am going to their offer day next Saturday with DD. I was aware that parents are allowed to join certain aspects of the day (I’m hoping a tour at the very least) but what were the parents attending that they shouldn’t have been? 😳
Also, is there a parent talk at all? Just trying to envisage how the day pans out! 😊

Sybill · 17/03/2024 16:54

@Groundhogday2021 There’s an intro talk for all (but they did ask for just one parent to attend with each student, as there were a few family groups and the lecture theatre can only accommodate so many). They split the group in 2 for the rest of the schedule and there was a PBL sample class (students only) and a sample lecture (parents could attend this if space allowed) and then there was a campus tour (which anyone could attend) which also showed the accommodation. So parents able to join most of it and plenty of time for questions too so I think they got the balance right.

Manchester breaking the mould and pumping out offers on a Sunday night.

My DS has got offer from SGUL for 2025 entry AstarAA or AAA if he confirms as his first choice. He has another offer, which he prefers also AstarAA. Does this mean if he doesn't confirm SGUL and gets AAA, he will lose both? I am so sorry to ask silly questions. So sorry the star button on my computer doesn't work 🤔

opoponax · 17/03/2024 21:30

Congratulations on all the offers. Great that things seem a bit more normal than they have been for the last few years. The lower offer grades for firming seem a bit odd. I thought they weren't supposed to do that any more.

opoponax · 17/03/2024 21:43

@AutumnSilver you are correct that if your DS got AAA in his exams and hadn't put SGUL as his firm (first) choice, he wouldn't meet the requirements of either offer.

Mumofboys2006 · 18/03/2024 10:13

Quick question on the firm and insurance thing.

B’ham suggest applying for accommodation the minute you have an offer with a June deadline. As BSMS is a slightly lower offer that’s our insurance offer for now, but what if he changes his mind after offer days? Can we change them or should we wait?

mumsneedwine · 18/03/2024 19:53

@Mumofboys2006 do Bham allocate accommodation now (thought only Notts did that ?). If not then wait. It's v hard to change order once firmed.

OP posts:
Mumofboys2006 · 18/03/2024 20:07

I think I need to phone them as it seems early to be applying for accommodation!

mumsneedwine · 18/03/2024 20:10

@Mumofboys2006 I've had a lot of and as long as you apply before the deadline it's fine. Notts is the only Uni I know shop do first come first served.
