@Ironoaks Congratulations to your DS! Great news.

PettsWoodParadise · 22/06/2024 11:47

@Ironoaks fantastic news, and from what I know, very well deserved

Panicmode1 · 22/06/2024 12:16

Congratulations to @Ironoaks and @PermanentTemporary 's DCs. Very well done to both!

Having been following your DS's story for the last 8 years @Ironoaks since our DC started their GSCE years together, I can safely say it was never in doubt

HoneyMobster · 22/06/2024 13:23

Very good news. A lot of hard work went into that result @Ironoaks

Teriyakieverything · 22/06/2024 14:18

@Ironoaks @PermanentTemporary congratulations to your DC’s. You must be so proud.

@Malbecfan Your DD1 s must have been epic. Hopefully something will work out for DD2.

mutterphore · 22/06/2024 16:42

@PermanentTemporary very well done to your DS also for his second year exams and passing his driving theory! Lots to celebrate!

@Malbecfan I'm so sorry to hear about your father and it's lovely that your DCs are so supportive. Very good luck to your DD2 for her next step in life and also to your amazing DD1.

PermanentTemporary · 22/06/2024 18:54

Brilliant news @Ironoaks, congratulations to your ds 👏

Malbecfan · 22/06/2024 19:35

@Ironoaks wonderful news! Many congratulations to your DS. @PermanentTemporary excellent news - again, congratulations.

I spoke to DD1 last night. Sorry @Ironoaks I didn't remember to ask her about the gowns. However, she met someone at the conference who will be looking for a post-doc in the next 9-12 months and wants DD1. I hoped she would get a "proper" job rather than staying in academia. It's in the USA, but not an area that is known for being liberal. I can't face working more than another year so whatever she does, she needs to fund herself (or ask indulgent Grandpa to finance whilst he's still with us).

I did 7 hours of driving today and DD2 is now home, almost for good. She will go back for a week prior to graduation, but most of her flat is clear. She is now writing an application for a job in Japan - she can at least get by in Japanese. My dad is delighted that she's here, so I hope she can stick around for a few weeks at least as it takes some pressure off me.

Ironoaks · 22/06/2024 19:47

@Malbecfan Your DD1 is clearly networking effectively and it's good to have that as an option. Doing a post-doc doesn't necessarily commit her to a career in academia if she decides that she wants to do something different.

I hope your DD finds something soon.

Malbecfan · 26/06/2024 15:17

Quick derail, for which I hope I will be forgiven. DD2's results are in and she scored a First for every one of her Masters exams. In her viva, she scraped 85% (she now admits she thought it went badly but didn't want to worry me). I am very very proud of her. Graduation is just over 3 weeks away. I need to find someone to look in on my dad whilst we are there.

mutterphore · 26/06/2024 15:48

@Malbecfan massive congratulations to your DD2! What a star! You must be very proud of her. I'm sure your dad will also be really pleased and hope you're managing with his care alongside a busy life. Good luck to her with her job application for Japan.

DahliaMacNamara · 26/06/2024 16:01

Very well done to your DD, @Malbecfan.

Malbecfan · 26/06/2024 16:01

Aww @mutterphore that's really kind. She didn't get the Japan job but has put in a load more applications over the last few days. Annoyingly, there was a massive internet outage for 24 hours Monday - Tuesday, then our electricity was off for most of this morning. DD has decided that this is God's way of telling her take a break from job hunting.

Hope the vac schemes are going well for your DSs and that good news is just around the corner for them.

Ironoaks · 26/06/2024 17:35

@Malbecfan - congratulations to your DD2, that's wonderful news!

We"re heading to Cambridge this evening for DS's graduation tomorrow. I just hope the weather cools down.

Malbecfan · 26/06/2024 17:36

Thanks @Ironoaks . I hope you have a fabulous time

mutterphore · 26/06/2024 17:43

Sorry she didn't get the Japan job @Malbecfan and I'm sure the right job for her will emerge in good time once she's taken a well deserved break.

@Ironoaks have a fantastic day at your DS's graduation. He's done brilliantly well and it's a lovely way to celebrate his success.

PettsWoodParadise · 26/06/2024 18:27

That is a stellar result for your DD2 @Malbecfan you must be so proud. Sounds like she will succeed with whatever she puts her mind to.

HoneyMobster · 26/06/2024 19:11

Well done to your DD @Malbecfan - what a well deserved result.

I briefly had DS1 back for a few days but he's returned to Oxford for his viva on Monday.

DS2 has also gone off to try and qualify for a significant sporting event. So I have an empty nest again.

Not for long though as I'm picking DD up on Friday from Oxford so she can work at another significant (not the same one!) sporting event local to us.

pivoinerose · 26/06/2024 22:17

Malbecfan that's a sensational result for DD2 - firsts across the board is very special. Well done her!

PermanentTemporary · 27/06/2024 06:10

Amazing results for your Dd @Malbecfan, what a superstar!

Malbecfan · 27/06/2024 10:03

Thanks so much for the lovely comments. With all the shitshow that is caring for my dad, dealing with a batshit sister and having negative colleagues being assigned to my team at work, this is something very nice. DD2 is a massive practical support right now so I am delighted for her.

Ironoaks · 27/06/2024 21:36

We had a lovely day with DS. Everything went really smoothly. Thankfully it wasn't as hot as earlier in the week.

After the official college group photo DS met up with his friends and we took photos in the college gardens. His friendship group has been stable through the four years and we remembered some of the parents from previous events. Some of his non-graduand friends had come along to support, and they stayed to take photos of the procession while the parents made their way to Senate House.

There was a moment when we realised we were in the wrong queue at Senate House (we had managed to join the gallery queue with floor tickets despite the colour coded signs 😳) but the stewards were lovely and sorted it out seamlessly.

DS was the first from his college to go up to receive that degree, so got the full statement (rather than "te etiam admitto ad eundum gradum")
After the ceremony he found out that he's been awarded a college prize.

The college did a lovely buffet supper. Both the Senior Tutor and the Master chatted with us about DS and his future plans.

Malbecfan · 27/06/2024 21:38

@Ironoaks that sounds amazing and congratulations to your DS on the college prize. What are DS's plans for the future?

Ironoaks · 27/06/2024 22:30

@Malbecfan he is staying on to do a PhD in the same lab where he did his Part III project, as a member of the same college he's at now.

His next event at the college will be his postgraduate matriculation. Hopefully wearing the correct style of gown. Apparently there's a flowchart; he saw it in Ryder and Amies when he dropped his hood back. 😂
