The other thread is nearly full so I took the liberty of starting a new one...

Congratulations to your DS, @Ironoaks. It does sound a wonderful day.

Is he changing college for his PhD? I didn’t realise you had a postgraduate matriculation if you already had a degree from Cambridge.

Panicmode1 · 28/06/2024 05:41

Catching up after a nightmare 48 hours with a very sick dog, culminating in emergency bowel surgery for her last night - and a whopping bill when I had to drive her to the emergency vets for overnight hospital care (our vets don't do overnight) - estimate of £600-900 for effectively a 4.5 hour stay..I'm in the wrong job 😉- I haven't seen my vet's bill yet!

HUGE congratulations to @Malbecfan 's DD, what stellar achievements, and so glad you had a wonderful day @Ironoaks celebrating your amazing DS.

@AprilBringsTheSweetSpringShowers DS is staying at the same college. As you say, I don't think he needs to do the university matriculation again. I'm not sure whether or not he re-matriculates to the college. The master's parting advice to DS was to make sure he gets invited to the dinner...

Ironoaks · 28/06/2024 08:42

@Panicmode1 that sounds very worrying for you (not to mention expensive). I hope your dog makes a good recovery.

pivoinerose · 28/06/2024 09:07

Poor Ddog Panicmode :( Fingers crossed for a full recovery.

ofteninaspin · 28/06/2024 11:30

Congratulations to your DS on his prize @Ironoaks . So glad you had a lovely graduation day and it wasn’t overly hot.

Sorry about your poor dog (and the bill) @Panicmode1.

I can’t remember if I have already congratulated your DD2 @Malbecfan on her stellar results so well done to her too. Especially lovely to have something to celebrate amidst the challenges of caring for your dad.

DS is back at his old college today for his girlfriend’s graduation. She passed her driving test in Cambridge yesterday so much to celebrate.

Malbecfan · 28/06/2024 20:39

@Ironoaks DD1 matriculated again for her PhD. She stayed at the same college (albeit living out with friends) - better the devil you know was her thinking. The postgrad gown at her college was a generic longer black gown rather than the more fetching undergrad one with a different colour on it. It wasn't very expensive and meant that the MA graduation was considerably cheaper as she only needed to hire the MSci hood, as opposed to her friends who had to hire the lot.

DD1 enjoyed supervising 1st years and doing lab demonstrations, and found it quite lucrative too, although some colleges were much better at paying than others. She ended up having to threaten one with a Letter Before Action in the small claims court before they finally paid up (one occasion when mum was useful!) It's only this year that she has wanted to focus on her research, so has done a few hours in the coffee shop in the gym for extra cash.

@Panicmode1 I hope the bill is not too painful and the dog recovers well.

Thanks so much for all the good wishes about DD2. This is such a friendly board - I will miss it if and when DD1 finally gets the elusive PhD.

beeswain · 30/06/2024 18:12

DS now has his results for MMath and has achieved a Distinction. He's having a little wobble that he opted to apply for jobs rather than a PhD as he says he is already missing doing Maths.....so he's been doing some from downloaded courses he didn't actually take!
It will be interesting to see if the world of work appeals/stimulates him or whether he will re think the PhD.
Lots of congratulations to other dc @Ironoaks @Malbecfan @PermanentTemporary . I will miss the warm fuzziness that is this thread and hope to pop back from time to time to follow progress.

mutterphore · 30/06/2024 18:34

@beeswain many congratulations to your DS for his Distinction! What a fantastic results and very well deserved too! Hope he takes a bit of time to decide between a PhD and the world of work. I suspect he'd love doing a PhD if that's possible for him. Whatever he decides, very good luck to him and do drop back into this thread to update if and when you want to. It's always lovely to hear from everyone.

PermanentTemporary · 30/06/2024 18:40

Oh goodness @Panicmode1 - I hope your dog's recovery will be OK. I'm in total denial of the costs of multiple animals - I'm in no way an animal person and we have 5 pets.

Ds has just headed off to his long summer internship, he'll be in London. Feeling terrified for him in an unhelpful way. I had so many awful jobs that I was no good at for a long time, I'm projecting. Reminding myself he's a separate person.

Panicmode1 · 30/06/2024 19:03

Thanks @PermanentTemporary - she's recovering well although I'm now going to have to muzzle her to stop the scavenging...she'd eaten a corn on the cob kernel or something....🙄

Good luck to your DS - mine starts his internship tomorrow too!

pepperaunt · 30/06/2024 19:57

DD (C) is also starting her internship tomorrow (supposed to have started a week ago, but the supervisor has been a bit lax with her contract). “Graduated” but is staying on for an integrated masters. Congratulations to all of the graduates!

pivoinerose · 30/06/2024 20:27

Huge congratulations to your DS beeswain - he's seemed extraordinary on the maths front from the time he appeared on the thread but his results are especially impressive after his rocky first year. I'm not in the least surprised that he's thinking of a doctorate. Incredibly well done.

DD is due home on Wednesday. She's going to Henley on Tuesday (her boat missed out on qualifying but she wants to use her ticket to the Stewards' Enclosure). She knows she's due to start her job on 30th September but doesn't know where she's being posted quite yet. She's absolutely dead set on London so fingers crossed.

I wonder if Maths is the first set of results? I'd forgotten about results tbh. Urgh.

Ironoaks · 01/07/2024 07:08

@beeswain - congratulations to your DS on his distinction!

HoneyMobster · 01/07/2024 07:41

Congratulations to your DS @beeswain - well deserved.

DS1 has his viva today and then he will be done! He's going away fur a few days with his GF before coming home (for good!) at the weekend. DH picked all his stuff up yesterday. It's all sitting in my hall waiting to be dealt with!

Malbecfan · 01/07/2024 20:04

Congrats @beeswain - wonderful news. @pepperaunt that was DD1's experience. The 2 certificates after the Masters was a nice touch

OnePlusOneEquals · 02/07/2024 14:34

Can I ask - when do first years get their end of year exam results back generally at Oxford?

beeswain · 02/07/2024 19:25

I think it might be subject dependent but it seems they work in reverse order,4th years get theirs first, then 3rd then 2nd then 1st. I think DS got his around the end of July in the first year.

pivoinerose · 02/07/2024 20:26

Yes that's the same for humanities too. Finalists around the end of the first week of July then Prelims a week or ten days later.

LaundryFairy · 03/07/2024 08:33

Thanks for the rough timing - we’re waiting on DS’ finals results. The run up to exams wasn’t easy for him and he is worried that he might not have done as well as he is capable of.

pivoinerose · 03/07/2024 09:08

Very best of luck LaundryFairy. I'm trying to forget that I know results are imminent. Nothing in particular hangs on grades for DD (for her short term plans at least), which is good.

LaundryFairy · 03/07/2024 09:33

Thanks, pivoinerose, and good luck to your DD too. DS has a conditional master’s offer (with funding) which makes the wait quite nail-biting.

pivoinerose · 03/07/2024 11:14

Impressive to get funding for a masters. Have they specified a first or a 68/ specific mark?

LaundryFairy · 03/07/2024 13:11

Yes, a 68 for his offer. We’re thrilled about the funding, but it does also raise the stakes and bring extra pressure.

DuckPondering · 03/07/2024 19:17

My DC has their 1st year O result back. Passed thankfully. Biochemistry.
