The other thread is nearly full so I took the liberty of starting a new one...

Thanks both. I think DS is actually quite chuffed about the scholar bit.

sytron · 09/01/2024 14:34

well deserved award i am sure. Well done!

And so he should be - money is nice, but recognition of one's brilliance is nicer 😉

Ha! This thread is such a support. I just couldn’t/wouldn’t share this bit of news with anyone in real life.

beeswain · 09/01/2024 17:22

That's lovely news @ofteninaspin - congratulations to ds!

HoneyMobster · 09/01/2024 17:38

@ofteninaspin - lovely news. He should be chuffed with himself!

Looking forward to an influx of newbies to this thread now Oxford offers are out...

goodbyestranger · 09/01/2024 17:39

Many congrats to your DS ofteninaspin!

mutterphore · 09/01/2024 18:15

Wow! @ofteninaspin , what brilliant news for your DS! This is lovely for him even post-leaving Cambridge.

Good luck to those starting a new term and welcome to any new joiners here who heard that their DCs have offers for Oxford (and to those for Cambridge still to come). My DCs really loved their time at O & C and miss it so much now.

@beeswain thanks for your good wishes to DS1 and DS2 with their law conversion courses. Hope your journey back with your DS went smoothly and his final few terms are really good for him.

DahliaMacNamara · 09/01/2024 18:34

Attaboy, @ofteninaspin .

Looking forward to the newbies arriving on the thread. I suppose some of them might be a bit diffident pre A levels, if their DC aren't applying with results in hand. If you're lurking, we're happy to answer questions.

Ironoaks · 09/01/2024 19:05

@ofteninaspin - congratulations to him!

ofteninaspin · 09/01/2024 19:50

Thanks all for your kind words and good luck to both your DC@mutterphore with their conversion course exams.

lullubell · 09/01/2024 22:55

Newbie here and first time uni parent! My daughter has an Oxford offer. Found the admissions thread really useful so hope it's ok to also join this one

PettsWoodParadise · 09/01/2024 23:00

Welcome @lullubell amd congratulations to your DD for her offer. I was a newbie like yourself not too long ago, DD is in Y1 at Cambridge. There are lots of very knowledgeable people on this thread who have a mine of information and loads of kind words and support. @goodbyestranger is a particular gem with multiple DCs at both O & C past and present.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2024 08:04

Thank you very much PettsWoodParadise but only one DC went to Cambridge and only as a postgrad - much more knowledgeable posters here on the Cambridge front.

lullubell · 10/01/2024 08:34

Thankyou @PettsWoodParadise that's good to know. I do have an initial question about O. Does anyone have any experience of Vincent's scholarships? My daughter is a talented dancer and would like to continue at Uni. Looking at Vincent's scholarships it looks like they cover predominantly the less artistic sports? Anyone know if this is the case or if it's worth a try for dance?

KazzaV · 10/01/2024 10:30

Joining this thread as DD got an offer yesterday - have to stop saying when you go to Oxford as still have to get the results - DD doing IB and the offer is 38 with 3 6’s in higher so should be ok but you never know .
I was planning ahead though ( without telling her 😆) and looks like freshers will start Sunday 6 Oct - when do they move into college usually ?? DD was 2020 covid cohort so couldn’t take him to uni ( we live in the Channel Islands and had 2 weeks isolation in place so sent him across by plane and Grandad took him ) so I am definitely going this time .

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2024 10:44

It depends on the college. The ones not in the centre all expect students to arrive on Sunday and some of those in the centre do too, but because of congestion some colleges have freshers in on the Monday or even Tuesday.

goodbyestranger · 10/01/2024 10:46

If you're coming from the Channel Islands the college may well say come along early though.

KazzaV · 10/01/2024 10:59

Thanks a lot - have booked a hotel for Sat night that can fit us all !

ofteninaspin · 10/01/2024 12:19

@lullubell congratulations to your DD.

Dance was not included in the Vincent Awards during my DD’s time at Oxford (2018 - 2022) but that might have changed so worth your DD checking with the administrators.
There were a number of students in 2018 who were in vocational dance training before going to Oxford and they worked hard to raise the profile of classical and contemporary ballet and tap. Half blues were awarded for dance for the first time in 2022.

lullubell · 10/01/2024 12:58

@ofteninaspin thanks for replying. I'll ask her to message to ask before applying. Good to know that it sounds like there will be an opportunity to continue to dance at Oxford. I can't imagine she would be the only one who is keen to continue!

ofteninaspin · 10/01/2024 13:54

@lullubell Auditions are held in the first week of term. Classes and show rehearsals are usually in the dance studio at Worcester College.

lullubell · 10/01/2024 14:42

Amazing thanks @ofteninaspin

Malbecfan · 11/01/2024 09:43

Fantastic news @ofteninaspin . Well done to your DS. I am currently looking after my DF following a fall, so may well be spending more time on Elderly Parents than here at the moment. Welcome to newbies

goodbyestranger · 11/01/2024 10:16

Sorry to hear about your DF Malbecfan :(
