DD has just received her Spanish interview! And breathe Grin

stoneysongs · 27/11/2023 10:50

Woo hoo! DD's college has just agreed she doesn't have to do an EPQ 💪

Gonegrey1967 · 27/11/2023 10:55

Hello!
my YP has just got an interview for NatSci next week. Bang on a week’s notice. Eek!

can I ask a question about tablet. Grandparents and I want to get them one but not sure difference between iPad Pro and iPad Air. Want to get one asap now for the interview

Don’t want to go overboard but equally don’t want to save a few pounds and then regret it. View is that wherever they go that an iPad and keyboard would be useful at uni?

does anyone have a YP that does NatSci or science based degree and think that iPad Pro is worth the extra money?

we would be getting a refurbished one but a reasonably recent version

thanks and well done to everyone who has interviews so far and fingers crossed for the rest.

What a relief!

Well done for your tenacity in getting them to see sense!

She can just focus on the important stuff now!

Lightsabre · 27/11/2023 11:24

Ds not applying for Nat Sci but we were eyeing up a 2021 Ipad yesterday available at John Lewis for £299 (without data package). However, ds thinks his school may be able to lend him the tech needed and those are IPad Pro's. He's tech savvy but will still need to practice using the app he needs and a stylus.

Well done @stoneysongs, a battle worth having! 🎉💪It was an absolutely bonkers idea. 🤦‍♀️

lullubell · 27/11/2023 12:23

@mummylife123 yes! What a relief!

lullubell · 27/11/2023 12:26

@Gonegrey1967 my DD is not doing science but has had an iPad Pro since year 9 and couldn't live without it. She takes it everywhere with her and does all her work on it. It's been through 2 keyboards but apart from that going strong. Definitely been a good purchase and she prefers it to a laptop as it's easier to carry around. If she gets into O she will be taking it with her!

DS has an iPad Pro - don't think he could live without it (Engineering at C). He also has a laptop but barely uses it.

mondaytosunday · 27/11/2023 12:47

@Gonegrey1967 also iPad Pro fan here. She does her animation on it too.
@mummylife123 phew!
@stoneysongs thank goodness they have finally seen sense!
DD came down from her online assessment- she was first in the 'room' and says all the others were late!! I can't understand that. She could see them all throughout the test! Anyway the questions were quite broad but she's thinking she did ok. Basically just relieved it's over. Now another mock interview...

lullubell · 27/11/2023 12:23

@mummylife123 yes! What a relief!

She is so pleased, as was starting to get very angsty about it!!

catmomof3 · 27/11/2023 12:49

My DD's friend at school just got an email for Maths but is too scared to open it bless her.

lullubell · 27/11/2023 12:49

@mummylife123 I get it! She can breathe now. My DD was hesitant about getting too deep into interview prep until she knew for sure she had one

Redhotchillipeppers · 27/11/2023 13:31

My DS has used an iPad Pro since first few weeks into year 12. He wishes he had it from the start of year 12. Transferred all his work from those weeks onto it. He’s doing maths, FM, chem and physics. He does all his work on there. Applied for maths at university- it will defo be something he takes with him. When at home connects it to his desktop, so he can see the questions/resources on his desktop screen and works on his IPad. This way it gives him a bigger screen to work on. But at school he manages just fine with the iPad.

stoneysongs · 27/11/2023 13:43

DD also has an old iPad Pro, bought second hand, I think it was about £300. She loves it, uses it in college and at home so doesn't need (or have) data. I have one for work too and it's great. I don't know about iPad air though - we both felt we needed the large size which was only available as a pro, so didn't really investigate the air.

DD now has the details of her second interview at another college, which feels a bit odd as we don't have the details of the first one yet. Does anyone know - do the first and second interviews fulfil different functions, are they likely to be different? Maybe it varies by course but I have vague recollections of one being a general interview and one subject specific or something?

goodbyestranger · 27/11/2023 13:49

Which subject is your DD applying for? Presumably a science?

Revengeofthepangolins · 27/11/2023 13:51

Where there are two interviews at the same college they sometimes split it (eg english the first might be based around the passage they give them just before hand, while the other might be on PS and wider reading). But for subjects like bio where two colleges interview everyone right from the start, I think generally the two interviews stand alone, as it were.

DSandDD · 27/11/2023 13:53

@mummylife123 yay!
My son was relieved when he got the email on Friday- very quickly it was replaced with everything he wanted to for interview prep, on top of school commitments (which as the term starts coming to an end are rather a lot!)

My daughter is getting two unseen pieces of work for her two English interviews.

goodbyestranger · 27/11/2023 14:09

Exactly Revengeofthepangolins. In subjects where interviews at two colleges are standard, such as Medicine etc, the two sets of interviews are stand alone. Then, if both colleges would offer, the college of choice/ allocation has first refusal. If the college of choice doesn't intend to offer, the second college can still offer. Interview scores are looked at in the round though, with notes between the two colleges shared.

Very different where applicants are pooled.

Dafrty · 27/11/2023 14:09

@catmomof3 My DC has been advised of just one unseen piece, are your daughter’s interviews both with the same college? Just trying to work out if it’s college variation.

goodbyestranger · 27/11/2023 14:16

Dafrty there's a good amount of variation in approach between colleges in subjects such as English and History.

Dafrty · 27/11/2023 14:18

Thanks Goodbye

MirandaWest · 27/11/2023 14:32

Am hoping DD finds out details for the Spanish interview soon - she’s had the History details so far. She’d prefer it If they were on the same day but probably won’t be
