New thread as Part 2 about to fill.

DS has been offered an interview at a second Oxford college today so he's chuffed about that.

He had a practice interview today at school which he was ok with.

His friend also has an offer at 2 O colleges but for PPE.

YouOKHun · 01/12/2023 18:27

Can I join you all? My DC has applied to Oxford with grades in hand (did his A Levels this summer). I have been banished from seeing his PS or asking questions about the entrance exam etc. He has let slip that he has an interview next Tuesday for Philosophy and Modern Languages. I guess it’s good he’s taking charge of the process for himself but it’s quite hard not asking him about it! At least I can ask questions here without getting my head bitten off!

I may have missed it in the threads but are there others with DC applying with grades in hand? Very best of luck to all with interviews over next week/s.

HewasH2O · 01/12/2023 19:03

@Hertsessex DD was one of a few who continued with P&P alongside a non maths based E paper. She was less confident with E because she didn't take FM and hadn't completed her A levels maths syllabus in school when Covid struck. The vast majority drop philosophy in their second year with very few continuing with all 3 subjects.

notfeelingcreative · 01/12/2023 19:27

welcome @YouOKHun my DC is also applying (for E& M) with grades in hand. Hope the interviews(s) go well next week for yours !

mondaytosunday · 01/12/2023 19:56

@YouOKHun yes my DD has grades and has applied to C for HSPS. Interviews on Wednesday next week 😬. Her college one of the few that requires a written assessment which she did this week. She could see all the other applicants throughout which was interesting!
She's got offers from Glasgow and Durham, waiting for Bath.

Dafrty · 01/12/2023 20:29

@YouOKHun Grades in hand here. 3 interviews next week with the college applied to. Will be glad when it’s over!

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 01/12/2023 21:45

My DS is in Year 13, but I went to Oxford, and I had my grades already when I applied. It definitely made me more confident than I would otherwise have been.

YouOKHun · 01/12/2023 22:01

Thanks for your responses - good to see there are quite a few others with grades in hand. My DS wanted to wait until after A Levels so he could concentrate on the A Levels and then do some travelling this year, the flip side is that he has to go it alone, no mock interviews etc, but there pros and cons to both approaches I guess. He has got some other offers and is waiting on some so he’s staying open minded about where he will be this time next year.

Very best of luck to all for their interviews whether grades in hand or predicted. I too will be relieved when it’s over!

@YouOKHun my daughters (independent) school told them all last year that anyone taking a gap year and applying after they'd left were fine to come back for help. They've marked practice essays and done a few mock interviews which have definitely helped with her nerves. I believe some state schools are also happy to help, even if to just check the UCAS form and do the reference. There's so much info on YouTube from the unis and past applicants you can get a pretty good feel for things. Simply being a year older also helps!

Lightsabre · 02/12/2023 09:33

Welcome to new posters and hopefully you'll find this thread a supportive environment. Congratulations to those too who are still receiving interview invites.

I'll start a Part 4 thread as this one is almost full.

Yes state school here and they were happy to help. DD1 might have been better applying with predicted grades rather than actual but that's another story.

Heavyeyelids · 02/12/2023 23:29

Is anyone out there still waiting to hear from O for Maths? DS’s friends have all heard back from their various colleges and courses but not him!

Lightsabre · 03/12/2023 07:20

@Heavyeyelids, some Oxford colleges have started to send invites for maths, but not many. If you go onto the Student Room forum and look up the 'Official University of Oxford thread 2024' you'll find a spreadsheet in the first post. Some applicants are posting when they received interview invites and from which college (list is not exhaustive). I think Maths and some other subjects are a little later notifying this year due to the test issues.

We have a new Part 4 thread for this topic too as this one is nearly full.

Heavyeyelids · 03/12/2023 09:41

@Lightsabre

Thanks. I wasn’t sure if that spreadsheet was being kept up to date . Lots of people at the top don’t seem to have updated their entries, judging by the entries further down the spreadsheet who’ve applied to the same college. Also maths interviews start in a week so they’re cutting it fine!

@Heavyeyelids - my daughter applied to Cambridge a couple of years ago and her application went astray (I can't remember the exact details but she had her entrance exam acknowledged and knew that she'd made the cut but then no follow-up to interview). The school intervened and the college arranged a last-minute slot for her - if you haven't heard anything in a couple of days, I would speak to the school, assuming your son still attends.

Heavyeyelids · 04/12/2023 08:31

Thank you - good suggestion.

mushroom3 · 04/12/2023 09:05

@Heavyeyelids from the main student room thread it seems not all Maths applicants have heard, it depends on the college. Some candidates were emailed over the weekend for Monday interviews! ( other subjects). Maths interviews are next Monday to Thursday so hopefully your DS hears over the next couple of days

mushroom3 · 04/12/2023 09:06

Sorry I meant were told about interviews to over the weekend, so little over 24 hours notice!

lifeturnsonadime · 04/12/2023 09:16

Well I've dropped DS off at school (weather awful) where he will have his interview this afternoon.

He doesn't seem too phased by it, we've barely mentioned it this weekend. He feels that he has done all he can.

Will see what he feels like when I pick him up tonight after the interview. I'm glad he's doing it at school, less responsibility for me and our internet is sometimes a bit unpredictable!

Rzim · 06/12/2023 12:54

Apologies as I'm sure this has been asked before / but is it possible to ask for feedback for a friend's child who did not get an interview at Oxford for computer science? Thx x

Pleasealexa · 06/12/2023 13:07

@Rzim there is a new thread running that will get more messages, see link above

However Oxford selects less applicants for interview as rely on pre admission tests - assume the applicant sat the MAT? You can find data on previous years for MAT score vs interview. You will be able to get MAT results and feedback from Tutor for Admissions at the college they applied to.

DahliaMacNamara · 06/12/2023 16:04

They can certainly ask for feedback, @Rzim . But the acceptance rate for CS at Oxford is intimidatingly low. Around 95% of applicants will ultimately be unsuccessful, and the majority don't make it to interview.

Rzim · 06/12/2023 16:08

Thx all I have told my friend. X
