Thank you for info. What news Channel was it on?

I saw it on ITV news

Wotrewelookinat · 09/09/2023 10:45

You can watch a report on this on BBC Look East on iplayer, from yesterday’s evening news. Vice chancellor said 700+ students are affected. They will all get accommodation, firstly in spare rooms on campus, then seems like hotels in Norwich. There will be no extra cost to the student and there will be ‘care packages’ (no details). Also financial implications.

Thelostgirls · 09/09/2023 14:57

@Wotrewelookinat thank you. Just watched the clip. Just hope she gets on campus

Did the drop today. Think it will be ok - daughter all the way at the far end of the village which feels a bit remote (but obv a far better position than those who were expecting to be in the zigs until last week. Hope they're ok.) Student ambassadors all v welcoming and friendly, and I believe she's gone with some flat mates to the party night.

heinztomatosoup · 18/09/2023 08:05

Hi all dropped son yesterday, lovely room in Barton after ziggurat re-room. Only problem is there is NO-ONE in flat, only one other mature student who doesn't speak English. Poor son is on his own 😥 I'm assuming other occupants must be second years or something hence why not arrived yet. Am so worried he will have no one to go to freshers events with, gutted for him.

Cafeconleche · 18/09/2023 09:47

@heinztomatosoup ask your son to contact the accommodation people/student services to see if he can be hooked up with some of the other Barton flats who have freshers. There will be quite a few ex-Ziggs like him.

Seeline · 18/09/2023 09:49

@keiratwiceknightly my DD is in the Village - courtyard B.
@heinztomatosoup I'm sure the flat will be full - the uni are forking out for some displaced Zig residents to live in expensive private city halls. I am certain that they will have filled all their own accommodation first. Your DS will soon get to know residents in other flats and coursemates. Lots will be going to Fresher's events on their own though - that's how they meet others. Also much easier having the night club on site - they don't have to get into town in their own or anything.

Thelostgirls · 20/09/2023 18:27

@heinztomatosoup has you ds managed to make some friends? My dd is in britten house which I think is quite close.

OP posts:
heinztomatosoup · 20/09/2023 18:33

@Thelostgirls Aw thanks so much for asking. Still one lone flatmate in his flat but as someone stated I'm sure it will fill up at the week end, just not with freshers :(

Luckily he has one friend from home who coincidentally is also in Britten so he's been hanging out with him and his flatmates. Also met up with some exziggs from previous group chat, and has been to sports fair and joined up today.

So I would say he's doing well, thanks for asking, just a shame not to have mates in his flat and he's quite shy. But think it's going ok.

How are all your freshers getting on?

DailyMaui · 20/09/2023 20:51

I can join this thread now as DD has binned Exeter after two days and is heading to UEA this weekend. Long story. Anyway, she was told there was no on campus accommodation and no hope of getting any so she's in the Pablo Fanque accommodation in central Norwich. She's doing geography. She'll miss all of freshers week but hey, its what she wanted. Let's hope there are freshers in the same place. She has friends at UEA so hopefully it will be fine but I have told her that if I hear of her walking back into the city drunk and on her own at 4am I will be seriously fucking mad at her. She's given up at most a five minute slow amble to lectures for a 25 minute bus!

Thelostgirls · 20/09/2023 21:22

@heinztomatosoup glad you ds has met up with some friends. My dd met up with zigs group chat group too, maybe same one! My dd is very lucky and all her flat are freshers.

Thelostgirls · 21/09/2023 08:14

@DailyMaui hope your dd settles in ok. There are a lot of freshers in St Crispin in the centre so there will be lots of freshers on the bus into uni

@DailyMaui Pablo Fanque is really nice student accommodation, right opposite John Lewis 🤗AFAIK there are usually lots of first year students in it who’d rather be in town than on campus, and probably even more this year due to the Zigg closures.

Figment1982 · 21/09/2023 21:29

Hi @DailyMaui I was reading your thread the other day, and although didn’t comment was thinking that your daughter is sure to find her tribe at UEA.

It’s been a while (21 years!) since I left UEA, but my overriding memory is of meeting people from all different walks of life.. and not only that, but all those disparate groups rubbed along together very nicely. I was a shy, geeky, conforming girl when I arrived (and am now a shy, geeky, conforming woman) but made lots of good friends with international students, mature students, goths and punks, rugby players and nerdy engineers (one I eventually married).. everyone had fun together, no cliques at all.. it was great. And Norwich is a wonderful city.

I bloody love this. Thank you. I got that feeling from there when we visited on offers day so I love that this was the case for you.

No to mention, facing the other way very (very) close to the bus station, as I discovered when seeing DD off on the Megabus to Birmingham, but I think the 25 /26 to campus goes from round the corner?

@DailyMaui , I hope your DD is getting settled in better there?

Thelostgirls · 02/10/2023 09:35

How is everyone's dc getting on?
@heinztomatosoup hope your ds has met up with some more people in his flat.
@DailyMaui has your daughter settled in Pablo?
My daughter seems quite happy. The normal worries of friendship groups and getting used to lecture style teaching etc. but this seems to be settling down

My dd is in Hickling. Made friends and is loving it. Moving in and settling down couldn't have gone better

Secretly pleased she got UEA as her insurance, the campus is lovely, safe and secure

She seems really happy. I was meant to Facetime yesterday but she was extremely busy all day!

Pablo is very fancy - I'm going to get the lowdown on her flatmates later. The room is possibly the swishest student room I've seen and she gets a bed which is halfway between a single and a double so she was chuffed with that. I stayed overnight when I dropped her - in Broadview lodge. There's such a lovely vibe around campus, feels really safe at night.

keiratwiceknightly · 03/10/2023 10:13

I've also got a v happy daughter - enjoying her course, made plenty of friends, joined the netball teams so busy several times a week there. Glad it's going well for others.

heinztomatosoup · 04/10/2023 00:14

Hi all, lovely to hear that all your young people are enjoying UEA. Despite a very quiet flat with no flat socialising at all more than polite chat, DS is happy enough and has made friends through a friend from home's flat, course, the gym and also joined one of the sports teams. He seems cheerful and is coping fine which is such a relief. Thanks for checking in @Thelostgirls.
All the best to all the students now the actual studying starts!

Tumbleton · 08/10/2023 14:47

DS seems happy with second year so far. Enjoying the course, getting on well with flatmates, his part-time job is going well and he has joined a couple of societies.
Still hasn't had time to put up his wall-hanging or the dozens of photos he asked me to print.
We're planning to visit him at the end of the month.

MarchingFrogs · 27/10/2023 14:23

Have your DC met Sylvester yet? I thought of him the other day, when I saw a tweet about a three-legged ginger cat which acts as a hospital greeter somewhere (having lost the fourth leg in an accident on its way either to or from work one dayShock), and right on cue, DS2 (3rd Yr History of Art, home fir reading week) has just shown me a picture of 'Sylvester staring into a bush'Wink

Tumbleton · 27/10/2023 18:25

@MarchingFrogs DS has a Sylvester hoodie!
