I think it’s a tiny minority H20 - but that’s a worse outcome than anticipated surely? Is the idea that the Politics papers get marked once there’s a resolution, and that the students get a classification at that point?

HewasH20 · 12/07/2023 14:11

They believe they will be marked after 30 Sept. There may if course be other stray strikers as well amongst Phil & Econ, but most hopefully took a pragmatic approach (boom boom)!

At least they can graduate. I don't think the drip feeding of marks will help though, especially if you are borderline. I feel for the few who fall into Cat 4 with nothing at all.

HewasH20 · 12/07/2023 14:14

They can also be given document stating that they have a degree and explaining the circumstances to share with prospective employers.

SchrodingersKitty · 12/07/2023 15:21

Waiting with trepidation to hear if DS gets a result or not (joint History school). Those in earlier threads might remember the difficult time he’s had on top of the disruption that’s affected them all as the covid generation (his dad died at end of his first year and he took a year off as a result, leaving him out of step with his new cohort). He says the Facebook group for his joint subject is really blowing up with hysterical posts but he’s trying to stay calm. As am I!

SchrodingersKitty · 12/07/2023 15:24

I’m also someone who remembers going to exam schools to find your result posted up in class order with full names. The dilemma was whether you started reading from the top or the bottom!

beeswain · 12/07/2023 15:45

Fingers tightly crossed for all remaining results. DS has had his and has a first although he won't be graduating as he is staying on for an integrated Masters.
It seems such a long time ago that we were all waiting for the outcome of interviews - I can hardly believe it! And while I'm being soppy, this must be the nicest and most supportive thread on Mumsnet - privileged to share this journey with you all.

HewasH20 · 12/07/2023 15:51

We have our moments @beeswain !

Ontopofthesunset · 12/07/2023 15:59

Congratulations to all with results on this thread and commiserations to those who still don't know.

I'm delurking to say that DS2 (4th year linguist, Oxford) got an email yesterday to say he was in Category 3 - awarded a degree but no classification, and of course no idea when one might be awarded. He was a bit despondent. But then this morning he got another email saying his results were available on the Student Self Access page.

It seems yesterday's email put him in the wrong category; just one paper has not been marked yet. He wasn't sure whether to celebrate or not (were they really the right results?) until checking with his DoS who has reassured him that he can crack open the beer.

I think the various departments are going to be inundated with queries and complaints. This cohort has had such a fractured and messed up time with Covid and though most students we know completely support the right of the staff to strike, they can't help being anxious and disappointed with all this extra uncertainty.

SchrodingersKitty · 12/07/2023 16:40

DS just got email addressed to all Oxford History students to say results will be out tomorrow (morning for joint schools, afternoon for single honours) because of delay in processing and checking them. Seems his will be classified as he has not received an email saying otherwise. So on tenterhooks for just a bit longer.

HewasH20 · 12/07/2023 18:33

Everything crossed @SchrodingersKitty

mutterphore · 12/07/2023 18:37

@beeswain massive congratulations to your DS! You must so proud of him and very good luck to him continuing with the Masters.

@HewasH20 sorry to hear about the PPE students being adversely affected by the marking boycott. Hope your DC gets their proper result soon.

@SchrodingersKitty very very good luck to your DS who has been through more than most in the last few years.

I'm not sure DS2 wants us to know he may get his results tomorrow and I'll not ask him and just leave it to him to tell us if and when he wants to. It's the last day of our holiday tomorrow and we head home the next day. I hope he can enjoy it and not worry too much about his degree and at least it's looking likely he'll actually get a proper degree before his graduation, unlike poor DS1.

Good luck to everyone else waiting to hear results.

goodbyestranger · 12/07/2023 19:20

More congrats in order - fab result beeswain DS :) All the best to all the History people. My three History people had a 'not after' date supplied but no firm date, so timing of results were a surprise each time. Hopefully they'll all be happy and relieved this time tomorrow!

Ironoaks · 12/07/2023 19:23

@beeswain - many congratulations to your DS for his great results

Panicmode1 · 13/07/2023 07:31

Wonderful news @beeswain!! Huge congratulations to your DS, and all good wishes for his Masters..

JulesJules · 13/07/2023 07:37

Huge congratulations @beeswain that's brilliant! I agree about these threads, it feels like we have been through a lot together.

So disappointing for the PPEists and linguists so badly affected by the marking boycott @HewasH20 and @Ontopofthesunset it is really awful especially considering everything else this cohort have had to deal with.

Best of luck to all the other History people today. D1 has not mentioned getting the email referred to by @SchrodingersKitty . We were out getting some sea air on a very blowy Bamburgh beach yesterday so hopefully that took her mind off it for a while.

pantjog · 13/07/2023 09:58

Wonderful news @beeswain!

DaisyThistle · 13/07/2023 10:32

@mutterphore I have followed your DCs Oxbridge story for years (name changed but we were in touch for a while due to similarities in our DC's progression.) That Cambridge farewell ceremony sounds memorable if nothing else. I am so sorry your Oxford DC hasn't heard about his status yet. After the shaky covid/lockdown start they all had to end with such uncertainty seems doubly cruel. I hope it is sorted soon.

DS1 (Oxford) has been incredibly lucky – and worked like a dog to create his own luck. He's just found out he got a double first and in both his subjects the papers are fully marked so he can be awarded his full degree. He is bouncing on air. Off on a sports trip for 12 days but we'll be going to what I hope is a proper graduation for him later this month.

DaisyThistle · 13/07/2023 10:35

@beeswain - congratulations to your DC. It does seem a long time ago.

I dropped out of this thread as I felt a bit uncomfortable. Like @mutterphore I had two DC in the running but one made Oxford and the other didn't make Cambridge. It felt a bit odd to be chatting about one but not the other, but equally odd to be discussing on an Oxbridge thread the one who went elsewhere (thrived, is on target for a First too and has had a fabulous time) so I backed out of commenting but have been reading the thread on and off for four years!

DaisyThistle · 13/07/2023 10:40

@HewasH20 - yes the Cat4 lot really deserve better. DS1's close friend will leave without a degree. He was an overseas student so paid $$$$$$ to come to Oxford. Lockdown and then no degree. It's beyond unfortunate. I can't believe the university hasn't hastily put offers in place to teaching staff to ensure this cohort can graduate. I suspect there might be a few people asking for a partial refund of fees.

goodbyestranger · 13/07/2023 11:26

Incredibly good news all round DaisyThistle - not surprised your DS is bouncing on air. Very good to hear both are doing so well - wonderful news :)

SchrodingersKitty · 13/07/2023 12:50

DS got his results and got a first including a very high dissertation mark which should mean he’ll get funding for an Oxford MA next year. I’m so proud of him after such a difficult few years. He’s thrilled, though he was quietly confident all along. All papers marked so will be able to graduate in a couple of weeks. (He was one of the 2019 cohort who didn’t sit exams in his first year so these are the first formal marks he’s had throughout the degree so a huge relief to know his confidence was not misplaced.)

Ontopofthesunset · 13/07/2023 13:12

In an unbelievable develoment, DS (at O), on querying with the faculty office, has in fact been told his outstanding paper means he has not been given a classification and he will have to wait till the end of September when the boycott ends. We are very angry with the incompetence now, as he was told he had a First on the basis of the marked papers he received yesterday, and they are now withdrawing it pending the final paper as he is borderline. Which is beyond distressing for him, and would not have been so distressing if he had been told it was 2.1. And what would have happened if he hadn't queried it? Would no one have noticed? His not yet confirmed degree classification is still up there as we speak.

Panicmode1 · 13/07/2023 13:18

Congratulations to @SchrodingersKitty DS - that's wonderful news, but huge commiserations and righteous indignation on behalf of @Ontopofthesunset and DS. What a nightmare.

It is beyond appalling that these young people who have been through so much disruption and difficulty with the pandemic etc are still having to be disadvantaged by situations outwith their control.
