@pantjog well done to your DD2!

Crumpetty · 14/07/2023 18:34

@pantjog congrats to your Dd2 on her prelims!

And thank you for the info re the orchestras. Did your dd1 audition for the main orchestra? Trying to gauge the standard required. Ds girlfriend is an oboe player so I'm sure will try to join the wind orchestra.

Catsrcool69 · 14/07/2023 19:56

Hi, many congratulations to those DC who are celebrating getting results and huge sympathy to those still living with uncertainty. I have spotted in Sky News a story that negotiations are resuming. So a bit of hope perhaps? I can't even contemplate the impact of no supervisions.

pantjog · 14/07/2023 20:32

@Crumpetty I’m not sure if DD1 auditioned for the main orchestras. She’s a violinist with “only” a merit at grade 8 so maybe she didn’t get in. But she enjoyed the OMO and we loved the concerts in the Sheldonian. DD2 got in to the main orchestras (she plays an unusual-ish instrument) but couldn’t make the rehearsals because they always clash with her (non-negotiable) choir rehearsals. But she’s really enjoyed the wind orchestra.

Thanks all for further good wishes… so glad that you all get it and know what’s involved. Not always the case IRL!

Huge congratulations to your DD2, @pantjog on her Prelims results! That's brilliant news.

DS2 (O) accessed his results at last, once home from our holiday. He got 2 marks off a first, so slightly frustrating for him but a high 2:1 nevertheless. I'm extremely proud of him and all he's done and achieved in his years at Oxford and he's very lucky to have his actual results and can therefore graduate properly too.

His tutor sent a lovely email and DS2 is happy that at least he got a first in his dissertation and in one of the most tricky subject papers. Lots of his friends in joint schools have had to cancel their entire graduations now due to papers not being marked, which sounds awful. I think that the realisation that he's in the unaffected category is sinking in and of course meanwhile, poor DS1 (C) is no further forward in getting his results at all.

HewasH20 · 15/07/2023 08:49

@mutterphore I'm delighted for your DS. That's an impressive set of results & he can safely apply for any future roles with pride. Is his graduation next weekend?

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2023 09:24

Huge congrats to your DS mutterphore. Those are seriously strong results. I gather there are a number of History DDHs - just luck of the draw on papers. I’ve enjoyed reading about your DSs three years at Oxford - he seemed to have squeezed every drop of good stuff out of those years; as impressive as the final degree outcome!

Ironoaks · 15/07/2023 09:59

@mutterphore congratulations to your DS! A high 2:1 from Oxford will open all sorts of doors.

HoneyMobster · 15/07/2023 10:24

Well done to @mutterphore DS. What a relief.

DS1's GF read History / English and got her result through this week and got a 1st. Really delighted for her. It's nice as she's staying on for a Masters at Oxford at their college so they will get to spend his last year together.

DD picked up a 'top 10%' in one of her Medicine prelims. It's an area she's interested in and might be useful to help her get an internship next summer.

JulesJules · 15/07/2023 10:49

Ha @HoneyMobster I had to read that twice... History & English have done very well ;)

Many congratulations to your DS @mutterphore fab news and as you say it is sinking in how fortunate the ones with confirmed results are.

Malbecfan · 15/07/2023 10:59

Huge congratulations to mutterphone and pantjog and anyone else I have missed.

I'm heading to C next weekend to see DD1 as it's her birthday so will ask what she knows about supervisions and report back here. To be honest, she's just come back from a holiday and then stayed at her bf's parents' house so she probably has no idea. She was meant to be camping in Norfolk this weekend but has wisely called it off.

mutterphore · 15/07/2023 11:27

Thanks for the congratulatory messages everyone. His graduation is the weekend of 29th July and at least this one will be a real one!

Well done to your DD, @HoneyMobster on her Medicine Prelims! What a clever and resilient lot our DCs all are!

HewasH20 · 15/07/2023 16:55

With no disrespect, but DD's graduation will be a real one at the end of September too, even if her results won't actually be confirmed until October at the earliest. I would hate it if DD thought that her graduation was any less valid than someone whose 6th, 7th or 8th papers had been marked. She's worked incredibly hard and as Oxford says they have enough to go on to let her graduate, hers is as good a graduation as anyone else's.

HewasH20 · 15/07/2023 17:26

Actually, it might be even better, as she can genuinely say she has no idea if she has a first or a third, so she can't compare her results to anyone else's and feel disappointed!

goodbyestranger · 15/07/2023 17:49

I second H20. I've been a parent at eight Oxford graduations to date and can honestly say that the class of degree was never something which entered my head on any occasion. It really wasn't the point. Since all graduands were having a 'real' graduation and since by definition there will have been the full range of classes of degree represented at each ceremony, I don't think it can follow logically that any graduand this year isn't graduating 'for real'. They are, they simply haven't had their class of degree confirmed. That's a different thing altogether.

Panicmode1 · 16/07/2023 09:57

Congratulations to @mutterphore 's DS and wonderful news @HoneyMobster !

SchrodingersKitty · 17/07/2023 13:50

DS just realised (or belatedly read an email) that it is possible to have the reports on all his courses sent to him. Are other finalist DC doing this? I would definitely have wanted to see the marker’s comments (not a possibility in my day).

HewasH20 · 17/07/2023 15:33

A few more papers being marked would be good @SchrodingersKitty 😂

SchrodingersKitty · 17/07/2023 15:51

@HewasH20: of course it would - sorry to be thoughtless about the huge stress of those still waiting.

HewasH20 · 17/07/2023 17:20

I don't think DD would want to know what they thought of her papers. As long as she gets the grade she wants, that's it, Oxford is done and dusted. It's just going to be another figure to slot into a box in an online application form (if she gets given one!)

mutterphore · 18/07/2023 06:21

@HewasH20 , I only meant by 'real' graduation that DS2 (O) has had his degree class whereas DS1 hasn't and also DS1 (C) was told that the Latin wording at his ceremony had been changed to reflect the fact that this wasn't an actual conferring of a degree but rather stating they'd 'finished their studies at Cambridge and well done'. In that sense, the central factor of the ceremony was missing for him. It was an enjoyable day nevertheless.

I hope your DD has a fantastic graduation celebration no matter when she gets her exams marked.

HewasH20 · 18/07/2023 07:25

I doubt if my O level Latin would stretch to a translation of a graduation ceremony. We were more bothered about what was going on in the forum!

I'm sure both your DS's think that their graduations are a fitting end to their university careers and are ready to move onto their next stage.

pantjog · 18/07/2023 08:37

Congratulations to your O DS, @mutterphore. DD is graduating on the same day.

goodbyestranger · 18/07/2023 08:57

Yes, someone always up to no good in the forum.

I think that Oxford has a helpful translation in its programmes.

Ironoaks · 18/07/2023 09:06

You can bet that Grumio was probably involved.
