I have started a new thread as our previous one is nearly full. Name changed so I won’t forever be the OP. Originally for non early entry applicants I am sure anyone who would like to can be on this thread as we wait for final decisions to come in, negotiate UCAS extra and hope that the results will match the offers come August.

Hello, can I join? My DS has decided that Manchester is his top choice, physics. Just got to decide on the accommodation this weekend. He is however having a friendship crisis, poor lad. Does it ever get any easier? 😢

PettsWoodParadise · 31/03/2023 07:32

From the York undergraduate student accommodation page

Students who have accepted a firm or insurance offer can apply for accommodation

NotDonna · 31/03/2023 08:17

Yh it looks like they can apply but nothing guaranteed unless it’s firmed. Fair enough! I’ll suggest DD has a look at options. She had been looking at Bath options but they don’t open til mid May I think and then allocation is random so definitely no rush.
Welcome @BikeMum8 do hope your DS sorts out the friendship issues. Physics at Manchester will be amazing! Has he chosen his insurance yet?

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 31/03/2023 08:49

A decision from St Andrews this morning here - it’s a rejection. DS is fine with it - it was a bit of a long shot here. They even got the decision out 24th hrs before their offer holder day 🤣

BikeMum8 · 31/03/2023 08:55

Insurance is Warwick.
he finally heard from Durham at the end of last week.

Well done I knew I’d seen it somewhere!

WendyWebersdrugget · 01/04/2023 09:11

I don’t know if it’s changed but I do remember DS1 could only book accommodation at York if he firmed - but worth checking as I think they’ve opened a new college since then so may be less pressure. That reminds me to remind DS2 to put in for accommodation at Southampton. Still waiting on Bristol and UCL.

mrsconradfisher · 03/04/2023 12:23

Does anyone happen to know if there is an issue with UCAS at the moment?
DS is still waiting for 2 offers on UCAS, both from Loughborough. He had an email direct from Loughborough on Friday night offering him a place on one of the courses (typically the one he doesn’t really want). UCAS portal has been down all weekend but DS checked this morning and it’s up and running but nothing has changed. There is no offer from Loughborough on there for the course and no rejection from his first choice either so no idea what’s going on? Just wondered if this is normal as his others were all updated on UCAS immediately.

NotDonna · 04/04/2023 18:24

Sorry can’t help @mrsconradfisher ivecasked DD to see if it looks ok and it does to her. Any updates?
Just been looking at York accom. Why do they have so many differently ‘week’ options. They still do terms I believe but the options are 38 weeks (need to move out for Easter), 40 weeks (normal), 44 weeks (stay extra few weeks at beginning of summer), 52 weeks (handy for international students who won’t go home so much. There’s a LOT of 44 week accom and I’m not understanding why. If your intl won’t you prefer to have a long break at home?

Roundthecorneranduptheroad · 04/04/2023 19:42

@NotDonna hinthere, just to say that York is moving from terms to semesters as of this September. Link here

https://www.york.ac.uk/students/studying/semesters/

i should imagine that will have a big impact on accommodation contract length you want!

Sorry for multiple repeats but every time I posted it said Mumsnet server down!

PettsWoodParadise · 04/04/2023 21:33

Thanks @Roundthecorneranduptheroad . This is DD's insurance choice. So it looks like 22 teaching weeks, doesn't sound very much. Even Oxbridge with its renowned compact terms of 8 or 9 weeks so 24 to 26 weeks.

mrsconradfisher · 04/04/2023 23:02

Update is DS got rejected from Loughborough tonight. He is absolutely gutted and had no idea what to do now.

He really has no other options that he will consider apart from Surrey and tbh I don’t fancy paying £20k over 3 years at least as we need to top up his minimum loan for him to go somewhere he doesn’t want to go.
He really doesn’t want a gap year (for very specific reasons which I won’t go into) so only other option is apply through Extra.
Honestly the shit this kid has had to deal with the last few years, he just needed one bloody thing to go right for him. Im
so upset and really need to get a grip.

Era · 04/04/2023 23:14

Sorry to hear that. Ds was rejected from his top choice yesterday (st andrews). It’s really tough when they love somewhere. Unfortunately places like St Andrews and Loughborough are rarely going to have places through Extra. We are fully bigging up his second and third choices now!

No I know he isn’t likely to get a place there through extra but at the moment he doesn’t actually have a 2nd or 3rd choice, it was Loughborough or nothing in his eyes (stubborn as a mule!!). He has 2 more great offers(Birmingham and Surrey) but doesn’t want to go there. It’s going to be some very tough talking tomorrow I think.

Sorry to hear that. Surrey has a good reputation in Finance. You never know with Extra, at great opportunity may come up. There is always clearing too This year will be an interesting year for results as many have not sat formal exams before. So there may be the odd place/ course that you would not expect to come up. A place came up on medicine at Newcastle one year apparently.

Birmingham is a great university - a campus in a city. Very well regarded, much cheaper than Surrey and it has a great student life with three universities. Has he been to the offer holder events? I was chatting to a recent graduate about it just the other day.

NotDonna · 04/04/2023 23:56

@mrsconradfisher what happened re the email from Loughborough on Friday offering him a place? I think you said he’d applied for 2 courses. Is the one he got not what he wants? Has he been to offer days at Surrey and Birmingham - May they give a new perspective? Did he choose a 5th? Also, he’ll be processing it right now. He may feel differently in a few days or be more certain of his approach.

NotDonna · 04/04/2023 23:59

Sorry to hear about your DS @Era and St Andrews, hopefully he’s not too disappointed- it’s hard isn’t it?
What course is it for @mrsconradfisher is it sports related?

The issue with Birmingham is that it doesn’t do a placement year. God knows why that’s so important but apparently it is. He also hated Birmingham itself the day we went but that’s probably just because it was the first day of the Christmas market and it was heaving. We live in a tiny town so think it was just a huge shock. Loved the Uni itself though.

Yes he applied for pure Sports Science and Sports Science, PE and Coaching (but the Science element is tiny). He was offered that one and not the pure SS.
He applied for 2 at Loughborough, Birmingham,Surrey and UEA and has been offered all apart from the one he really wants. Discounted UEA (it’s 30 mins from us and he wants to move away) so only Birmingham and Surrey. He loved Surrey but can’t get past it not being bloody Loughborough!!
