Thanks for all the lovely messages. Particular congratulations to @coffeeandbiscuittime who has shared the journey with us for a long time, hope she loves Newcastle.

@mumsneedwine when I can face updating my spreadsheet I will get on the case!

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2023 15:54

@Monkey2001 I will try and do it first as you deserve a break 😊. So happy for your DS.

Cathpot · 17/08/2023 17:12

DD off to Edinburgh, huge relief. As others have said many thanks to those who have taken the time to help guide us through this process - it has made a significant difference, very grateful. Congratulations to those who have been successful and I hope that there are positive outcomes down the line for those who got difficult news today.

opoponax · 17/08/2023 18:09

DD is delighted with her results and is off to her first choice med school. Congratulations to those for whom today went well and wishing all the best to those who were disappointed. Huge thanks to @mumsneedwine and @Monkey2001.

Massive congratulations to everyone celebrating today, especially those of you I shared the journey with last year who had the stamina to do it all again @coffeeandbiscuittime @kackle @Monkey2001 I well remember the feeling of relief of a confirmed place.
For those of you wondering what on earth your DS are letting themselves in for, ds1 is loving doing his med course and ds2 is now a F1 doc who told me yesterday that he is actually enjoying doing the real job. It's worth the stress you've been through!

Monkey2001 · 17/08/2023 21:37

Good to hear @Haffdonga . It is too easy to focus on the negative stuff!

Africa2go · 17/08/2023 23:33

Rollercoaster day. 8am - Unexpected "Eligible for clearing" UCAS update this morning when DD's firm (only) offer rejected her. Turns out when we got to school that she'd narrowly missed an A in one of the subjects - arranged for review etc, uni said they'd look to hold her place but couldn't give her an absolute guarantee - they'd perhaps defer her.

12.30. Call from a uni that rejected her back in April offering her a place. Added to UCAS at 1pm and confirmed at 7pm. Arghh. That was a long 6 hrs.

So many tears - sad tears and happy tears. And wine. Lots of wine.

This medicine application process is brutal. I have aged 20 years!! So thankful for a forum like this for such amazing advice and support.

And breathe....

FanSpamTastic · 18/08/2023 00:11

@Africa2go - congratulations! What a roller coaster of a day.

W0tnow · 18/08/2023 04:24

@Africa2go legit my stomach leapt just reading that.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 18/08/2023 06:22

@Africa2go that is amazing news and sounds as if you need to do a quick mental swivel in terms of where she will be but such a relief not to need to review/resit. Hope she will be really happy in the new course and it will all seem as if it was meant to be. Had she rung around or had they just spotted she was in clearing from their waiting list? Just curious about how it all works.

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2023 07:22

Wow @Africa2go! Where is she going? Is it one she liked better than her Firm? So glad it all worked out in the end.

Africa2go · 18/08/2023 07:22

@Unexpecteddrivinginstructor no she hadn't called anyone, it was completely out of the blue. DD had interviewed there but had had a rejection, she hadn't been waitlisted as far as she was aware. Director of Admissions made the call, said that she could see she'd been put into clearing this morning and wanted to offer her a place.

Pip4764 · 18/08/2023 07:25

@Africa2go oh my word what a day! We narrowly missed a grade last week, tears on opening the grades email, convinced that was the dream over, then Uni accepted her on UCAS….didn’t actually believe it initially. Well done and you so deserve a glass or three of wine!!

Africa2go · 18/08/2023 07:30

@Monkey2001 she's going to Nottingham Smile (her firm was QUB). She's on Cloud 9, it was a front runner originally although we always said an offer was an offer wherever it was.

Unexpecteddrivinginstructor · 18/08/2023 07:36

That is fantastic news and she was obviously still on their radar, just as well she picked up the phone. I am sure she will have a great time at Nottingham. If you are based in England it will make travelling easier too.

Cratos · 18/08/2023 07:45

@Africa2go amazing news! Big Congratulations !

mumsneedwine · 18/08/2023 08:09

@Africa2go huge congratulations. Nottingham is a fantastic course and I'm sure she'll spend many hours getting lost in QMC (it's huge !).

kackle · 18/08/2023 09:16

Great news @Africa2go x

theinnergame · 18/08/2023 11:54

Fab news @Africa2go DD was on cadet camp with JvT earlier in the year who was (teasingly) berating her for not applying to Nottingham (it's too close to home and she didn't do biology) - having him on the staff is a huge plus and he only got into medicine after fluffing his A levels (he talks about it). Hope your daughter loves it there!

Monkey2001 · 18/08/2023 14:20

Great story @Africa2go !

opoponax · 18/08/2023 14:27

Glad it has all worked out @Africa2go

Can I ask for some advice.

Grandparents want to purchase a stethescope for DD as a gift. They promised her in y7 if she got in, they would buy one.

i know they aren’t needed immediately.

Can someone please recommend a make/model?

On another note, I feel drained after yesterday and am so looking forward to a takeaway and a few glasses of 🍷🍷and a good long sleep!

Thank you to each and every one of you for your support over the last 12 months.

opoponax · 18/08/2023 17:19

@kackle DS has a Littmann Classic III. You get different colours but still worth engraving with name as they all have them. They sometimes get discount voucher codes for them once they start their course.

I am feeling quite drained today too and DH says the same. Bring on the weekend!

HYMS Medicine is showing in Clearing on the UCAS website if that can help anyone!

mumsneedwine · 18/08/2023 17:54

@kackle same one here. Got 20% off voucher on first day at Uni and free engraving so worth waiting a few weeks. Raspberry colour. I like the sky blue. Definitely get engraved.

York, Kings, St George's were in clearing, but many others have been giving out late places (as we can see from Notts !). There must have been a lot of dropped grades this year 🥺.
