@RockyHorrorShow congrats re Bristol!

Big congratulations to all the shiny new offer holders. That first (or only) one is a game changer, isn't it? But just a reminder that all is not lost if you don't get an offer this year - as several of our last year's thread fellow posters have proved with offers this year after doing it all again.
Ds1 and 2 are at Bristol and Sheffield if anyone wants inside deets.

Peachy2005 · 15/03/2023 09:33

Congratulations on all the new offers and commiserations on the rejections…a lot happened yesterday! I wish Liverpool would just get on with it soon 😂

We are waiting still for Bristol. Any thoughts on accommodation if she gets a place. Had been looking at Print Hall

mumsneedwine · 15/03/2023 10:33

@kackle DD was at Orchard House and loved it. Friends at Riverside and Courtrooms also happy. Print Hall is new so no help there.

Thethingswedoforlove · 15/03/2023 10:34

@Peachy2005 im with you re liverpool!

LaLaFlottes · 15/03/2023 10:48

@Lottsbiffandsmudge Hello and congrats on the offers! I am sure @Haffdonga will have more info than me as her DS is further along in the course, but DD is in second year and I thought I would pop a few notes down for you, and others with a Sheffield offer.

DD is enjoying her course very much at Sheffield. She loves the city, big enough with plenty to do, but not overwhelmingly large. Peak District is on the doorstep and she's been on several guided hikes run by the University.

The halls in first year were good - they are not luxurious but in the main student villages they are reasonably priced and have en suite bathrooms and large kitchens. They are in a very attractive and safe part of Sheffield and we felt comfortable with her being there.

Once you firm your offer and accommodation opens, you can choose your room in whichever flat you want. You add a little biography about yourself and you can see what other people have written, so that you have a good chance of finding like minded people. They make sure to have medics together too, for extra support which is nice.

DD thought that the full body dissection was an excellent way to learn. They had a cadaver per small group and each group had a supervisor specific to the area of the body being covered. It was very well done and a big part of their learning.

There is early patient contact at Sheffield which is what DD specifically wanted. When DD was deciding between her offers, one of the main reasons she chose Sheffield was because of the course structure, so early patient contact, systems based learning, the patients as educators programme etc. Also you can intercalate if you wish, either at Sheffield or elsewhere. The options at Sheffield seem good with a wide range. You don't have to intercalate though.

She has been well supported by both staff and also students in the years above. There seems to be a very friendly and supportive atmosphere, with the students in the years above helping with revision sessions and guidance.

DD is very happy with the facilities. The Medical School is within the Hospital itself which she loves. They can use the libraries and study areas there, or other libraries. DD mixes it up a bit! Libraries are open 24 hours and there are plenty of coffee shops etc. The Student Union is very good too apparently!

There are many clubs and societies, and there are often Medic versions of clubs. DD plays a sport and has played in several Medics tournaments at other medical schools.

Housing after halls is plentiful and fairly cheap which makes life easier. DD is in a lovely house with 5 others and they plan to stay there for third year too.

I hope this helps a little - any questions do ask as I'm happy to help anyone who has questions about Sheffield.

Congratulations to all with offers. It's such a weight off your shoulders when they come in and such a huge achievement.

Will have a further look if she gets an offer

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 15/03/2023 17:50

Thanks @LaLaFlottes appreciated

Haffdonga · 15/03/2023 19:12

I think ds2 would agree with everything positive @LaLaFlottes has said about Sheffield. In the spirit of balance, a negative from ds's point of view has been the course placement structure in later years (it's meant he's missed out on experiencing placements in some of the chunky areas e.g. cardiology in favour of longer placements in fewer areas) but he tells me that's being changed so it hopefully won't affect newbies.
Ds2 is equally happy at Bristol. He's really enjoying the way the course is delivered in first year. Most learning (GP placements, small groups, anatomy) seem to be done with the same tutor group of approx 12 people and thankfully he gets on really well with them. He says the prosection style of anatomy teaching is very hands on (literally) so although they aren't doing the actual dissecting, they are very close up in a small group with the anatomy tutor and cadaver/ part of.
I'd say the downside of Bristol has to be the cost and shortage of accommodation. First year applicants to halls are asked to select an accommodation profile type (e.g. wanting quiet halls, ds selected mature student) and then rank up to 8 or 9 halls. There's no guarantee you'll get your top choice but they try to put you in the profile you request. Ds went from cheapest first and was lucky to get that with other grads his age but if he'd got one of the priciest ones he'd have had to re-think. It's shabby with shared showers but fine. He's now looking for (and so far failing to find) a house to share with his housemates for second year. I fear what they find will either be very expensive or a very long commute from uni.

LaLaFlottes · 15/03/2023 19:27

What can also be a downside of Sheffield is that it’s very hilly!! If you’re going to an offer holder day or for a look around - take your trainers 😆

jasminetrampoline · 15/03/2023 21:29

Congrats to the offer holders and fingers crossed for those still waiting. We're waiting to hear from Exeter and Southampton.

Monkey2001 · 16/03/2023 10:50

Rejection from Leicester - he is clearly rubbish at interviews!! So, provided he gets his A for chemistry, which should be fine, he will be going to UEA. Really excited for offer holder day on Saturday, hope he still feels as positive about the course as he was when researching after he has had a chance to find out more, but I am sure he will.

Things outside the course are also falling into place as he is talking to someone about a choral scholarship which looks good. Hope the gym meets his expectations on Saturday!

Sorry to hear about rejection.

We had a look at the pool and sports facilities at UEA open day as DD fancies taking up school hockey.

The facilities are amazing.

Might bump into you on Saturday.

Cratos · 16/03/2023 11:17

I have not managed to read the thread last couple of days and I will asap but I just wanted to say that my DS received a rejection from Leicester as well today after receiving offers from Bristol and Sheffield. I find that a little strange since he has perfect GCSEs and 2960 Ucat score. I was thinking that he was more likely to get an offer from Leicester. The only thing I can think of is that Leicester was his first interview and perhaps he was less prepared but again saying that we reviewed his answers afterwards and all sounded pretty good. We should maybe ask for feedback. Should we do that via email? We are waiting for Liverpool now.

Monkey2001 · 16/03/2023 11:30

@Cratos sorry to hear that, but it sounds like he has great options. All people rejected got an interview score, DS got 73/105 which is really very low, particularly as he got 850 for QR, so that would have been 14/15.

I think the medical schools are looking for different things and maybe it came across from DS that he was the right fit for the UEA course. It was always his favourite course, just that Norwich was further away than he would have liked. If he had a Leicester offer, his GF being in Nottingham would have swayed him a lot, so maybe it is a good thing he did not have to make a decision.

You really do only need one!

@kackle , yes, maybe we will identify each other from the things we hear! I think parents get a lot of free time, so PM me if you would like to go for a cup of tea.
