@Lottsbiffandsmudge Hello and congrats on the offers! I am sure @Haffdonga will have more info than me as her DS is further along in the course, but DD is in second year and I thought I would pop a few notes down for you, and others with a Sheffield offer.
DD is enjoying her course very much at Sheffield. She loves the city, big enough with plenty to do, but not overwhelmingly large. Peak District is on the doorstep and she's been on several guided hikes run by the University.
The halls in first year were good - they are not luxurious but in the main student villages they are reasonably priced and have en suite bathrooms and large kitchens. They are in a very attractive and safe part of Sheffield and we felt comfortable with her being there.
Once you firm your offer and accommodation opens, you can choose your room in whichever flat you want. You add a little biography about yourself and you can see what other people have written, so that you have a good chance of finding like minded people. They make sure to have medics together too, for extra support which is nice.
DD thought that the full body dissection was an excellent way to learn. They had a cadaver per small group and each group had a supervisor specific to the area of the body being covered. It was very well done and a big part of their learning.
There is early patient contact at Sheffield which is what DD specifically wanted. When DD was deciding between her offers, one of the main reasons she chose Sheffield was because of the course structure, so early patient contact, systems based learning, the patients as educators programme etc. Also you can intercalate if you wish, either at Sheffield or elsewhere. The options at Sheffield seem good with a wide range. You don't have to intercalate though.
She has been well supported by both staff and also students in the years above. There seems to be a very friendly and supportive atmosphere, with the students in the years above helping with revision sessions and guidance.
DD is very happy with the facilities. The Medical School is within the Hospital itself which she loves. They can use the libraries and study areas there, or other libraries. DD mixes it up a bit! Libraries are open 24 hours and there are plenty of coffee shops etc. The Student Union is very good too apparently!
There are many clubs and societies, and there are often Medic versions of clubs. DD plays a sport and has played in several Medics tournaments at other medical schools.
Housing after halls is plentiful and fairly cheap which makes life easier. DD is in a lovely house with 5 others and they plan to stay there for third year too.
I hope this helps a little - any questions do ask as I'm happy to help anyone who has questions about Sheffield.
Congratulations to all with offers. It's such a weight off your shoulders when they come in and such a huge achievement.
