All good here, see you at UEA @Itonlytakes1 and @kackle! Congratulations to others who got what they needed and best wishes to any in limbo.

toomuchlikemyusername · 17/08/2023 10:01

DS has secured his first choice place at Birmingham. Immense relief here.
Congratulations to those who have got places and commiserations to those DC who have not got what they hoped for. Sending hugs and kind thoughts to you if you/your DC are in that position right now.

KingscoteStaff · 17/08/2023 10:08

@kackle That’s great news!

Lottsbiffandsmudge · 17/08/2023 10:10

DS got his first choice and is also off to Birmingham!
Congrats to those getting what they needed and commiserations to those who haven't.

KingscoteStaff · 17/08/2023 10:12

@Monkey2001 That’s great news - I’ve been holding my thumbs for him since this time last year!

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2023 10:16

Love UEA. Lucky kids.
Go enjoy the day 🥂🥂🥂

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 17/08/2023 10:21

For anyone who's DC is considering trying clearing for medicine, TSR are saying KCL, Leicester and SGUL may have spaces available: https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=7371987

Obviously I can't verify this, you can probably find discussions of it at the end of the thread. But may be worth a shot if anyone's DC are considering it?

GoldieRetrieversRule1 · 17/08/2023 10:26

Good news in our household this morning. Congratulations to DC on their hard work! And thank you all for support and advice!

Cratos · 17/08/2023 10:27

My DS is going to Bristol in 2024. Thank you so much for all the advice and support in this forum. We couldn't do it otherwise. Very much appreciated. Congrats to those getting what they needed and commiserations to those who haven't.

Pip4764 · 17/08/2023 10:31

@justjuggling so sorry, please stay strong, it is so hard. Sending hugs.

Pip4764 · 17/08/2023 10:32

Well done to those with places 🥳, sending hugs to those without, but as has been said, there is always another path…but may just not feel like it at the moment…so do allow yourselves time.

Absolutechaos · 17/08/2023 10:38

DD dropped a grade in chem (B) but by some miracle Newcastle still accepted her. It's been a rollercoaster this morning! Thanks for all the amazing advice on this thread.

BabbleBee · 17/08/2023 10:56

Just jumping into the thread as a mum to an unsuccessful med entry last year.

DD took a year out and worked to get some money behind her, she visited a couple of universities to explore other options.

She resat her A Levels this year at a private centre, her college were worse than useless throughout. She’s improved by two grades, has got into a STEM degree on her new grades with the accommodation she wanted. She’s absolutely delighted and is really excited for her future. Even though results day last year was crushing, it has all worked out for the best in the end. If DCs haven’t got what they needed it’s awful to start with, but don’t lose hope.

IGoWalkingAfterMidnight · 17/08/2023 11:02

My DS will be applying with grades in hand next year now - he got A 🌟 A, A, A in maths, biology, chemistry and Welsh Bacc.

I'm really proud of him and his hard work and positive attitude in the face of rejection.

Congratulations to all those getting their places!

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2023 11:13

🥰🥂🍷🍹🥃🍺 such lovely news. Some with weird results today, but Unis seem to have been pragmatic about it all.
Off for a lie down.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 17/08/2023 11:16

Very chuffed household here - resit Chem grade A star and off to Newcastle.
Congratulations to all esp @Monkey2001 son - such a relief!
Thanks to the support for the last few years.
My DD has taught the sciences this year as an interventional tutor at her old school - it has done her a world of good.
Spoke to her colleagues ( also her ex teachers) who said she has grown in confidence and maturity and it has been a pleasure working with her - I personally think the enforced year out has been great for her development.
So for all those that don't get the grades this year , devastating as today is- it can be a blessing.

coffeeandbiscuittime · 17/08/2023 11:17

@mumsneedwine lie down before gin time tonight? You deserve it!

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2023 11:20

@coffeeandbiscuittime there may be gin this afternoon as staff pub outing planned. Results day tradition 😂

mumsneedwine · 17/08/2023 11:47

And @Monkey2001 yours was the best news. If you happen to make a 2023 spreadsheet I'd be the first taker - mine always seems less pretty than yours 😂.
I have 2 starting at UEA & it's one of my favourite Unis.
Enjoy IKEA everyone. Don't buy a stethoscope yet as they'll get a discount voucher when they start. And get it engraved as they all look the same and get borrowed on wards.
And advice on what to do next if not made the grades this year, please just send me a message. If feels awful now, but there are options.

My DD got her first choice. She is going to Imperial College London for Medicine. Very happy for her.
Thank you all for the valuable inputs during application process. Especially @Monkey2001 and @mumsneedwine .

KingscoteStaff · 17/08/2023 12:45

@coffeeandbiscuittime That’s brilliant! DD has had a wonderful first year at Newcastle - let me know if you need any info!

Postapocalypticcowgirl · 17/08/2023 09:48

Do you know anything about grades etc? Is it worth exploring reviews of marking or similar (you may have to pay).

I know at my school we're seriously considering putting some students forwards for this for some science subjects, because we're not totally happy with the marking (although AQA are always ridiculously pedantic).

Thanks @Postapocalypticcowgirl , we have thought about grade reviews but she was miles away. Ended up with BBC instead of the 2 A stars and 1 A she was predicted. It just feels like I’m looking at someone else’s results and she can’t understand it because she felt the exams had gone ok. Think we’re both in shock.

Current thinking is to re-sit them all the reapply next year with hopefully the right grades in hand. It’ll put her 2 years back that way but she’s still fixed on medicine as a career and I feel, as her Mum, I need to support that dream.

Huge congrats to everyone who will be waving their children off to uni shortly. Hope they have a fab time. Suspect I’ll be on the new application threads! 🤦‍♀️

If she can resit at college that's probably a really good option. In the end, 2 years is nothing against a life long career/dream, and it shows she's really committed to it. If she's got a 2 year plan, she can focus solely on A-levels next year, rather than having to deal with all the extra work a medicine application brings, and then have another year to focus on that more fully!

Best of luck to her. There have been some surprising results this results day, she isn't the only one.
