@petitebleu - so sorry to hear about your DS. I hope that some time out over Christmas may help to give him some space and time to think about his next steps.

Well, the scumbags. Can't stand theft, or train designers who make life so easy for criminals. Hope the prompt reporting and targeting makes it worthwhile for the police to access CCTV and collar them. Would be nice if they reinstated a guards van with a guard in it!

In the meantime, the process of doing the notes will have put the information in your dd's head, and she can still earn more.

goodbyestranger · 13/01/2023 10:51

Yes exactly PermanentTemporary. Spilt milk and all that. I do feel cross with the person or people who nicked the case though.

The British Transport Police at Oxford yesterday afternoon when she went back were super helpful and are calling for all the CCTV on the various stations.

Juja · 13/01/2023 11:33

@goodbyestranger oh no... that is a terribly hard lesson for your DD to learn... my heart goes out to her.

Let's hope the police find some useful footage and if there is a pattern with these thefts they can piece together evidence from a number of incidents though I appreciate that doesn't help you DD right now.

mutterphore · 13/01/2023 12:06

Oh no, @goodbyestranger , not all her hard-earned money too! Poor thing! I really hope she at least gets back the study notes and possessions. Has she told her tutor, just in case the stress of all this affects her ability to focus on collections? Not that collections are really that important. I hope the police find something helpful on CCTV.

JulesJules · 13/01/2023 14:25

Oh no @goodbyestranger that is truly awful. (Oh GOD at having all that cash in a bag) Can she/you claim anything on insurance? D1's stuff is covered by our house insurance as the college's insurance only covers their buildings and grounds. Don't know what the position is on cash though. Can she pull out of collections?

goodbyestranger · 13/01/2023 14:49

JulesJules just as well she messaged on WhatsApp to tell me she'd realised the cash was in the case too because had it been by phone she would have heard me saying not just Oh GOD but a whole lot more and then chasers to do with not banking it etc. By the time she'd been to back to the station and we spoke I'd managed to bore the dogs sufficiently with my thoughts so didn't spontaneously tell her my real thoughts about the colossal stupidity of it all, which she knew very well anyhow.

House insurance won't work on my policy also the work is of no monetary value and the insurance would think we were trying to pull a fast one if we said there was £1000 in a scruffy food bag.

I'm still hoping against hope that the bag will be found abandoned and that the thieves took one look at the Latin and Greek text books at the top of the case and chucked it without searching for more.

@goodbyestranger there was a mum recently who raised a lost portfolio (London bus I think) on Twitter… Took days/weeks, reached many people, re tweeted by celebrities sympathetic to the cause (can you ask the colleges/departments to support?)
she got it back though.

HoneyMobster · 13/01/2023 15:20

That's not a bad idea. Mary Beard would be perfect. She's active on Twitter. Obvs C not O but seems good hearted.

Malbecfan · 13/01/2023 16:01

@goodbyestranger sorry I have been away from here for a few days (workload lol) and am so sorry to read this about DD4. I moan about driving my DDs back to uni - by the time we get to a mainline station assuming trains are actually running, we can be a good way there - but I will moan less now.

goodbyestranger · 13/01/2023 19:19

Cheers Malbec.

Thanks for the suggestion Member786488 and Honey Mobster. I sent Mary Beard an email only a few moments ago and she replied and has already tweeted. Incredibly decent of her on a Friday night :)

JulesJules · 13/01/2023 21:22

I've retweeted, along with hundreds of other twitter followers of Mary Beard, what a good egg she is. I really hope something comes of it.

goodbyestranger · 13/01/2023 21:59

Yes it's seriously decent of her to take the time. And thank you too for the retweet Jules Jules.

HewasH2O · 13/01/2023 22:45

I left twitter a couple of months ago, but I used to get excited if Mary Beard replied to any of my tweets. She's a star at this kind of thing.

HoneyMobster · 14/01/2023 08:29

I'm excited. Going to retweet. Not sure my followers will add significantly but every little bit helps 😊

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2023 09:15

Debt of gratitude to you HoneyMobster for the specific suggestion and for the retweet. Every little certainly does help.

ErrolTheDragon · 14/01/2023 09:21

If nothing else it restores a bit of faith in humanity!

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2023 09:35

Certainly does Errol.

Malbecfan · 14/01/2023 09:37

I've also retweeted and my retweet has been retweeted. Sorry I can't do more

goodbyestranger · 14/01/2023 09:40

Thank you too Malbec! Hope you're not too wet down in Devon.

petitebleu · 14/01/2023 11:53

How awful @goodbyestranger. I've retweeted too, not that I use Twitter much. Hoping you get some news soon.

Thanks all for your good wishes for my DS. We're back into the UCAS whirl now.

Malbecfan · 14/01/2023 12:09

Yes @goodbyestranger it's wet. We just had an hour of it not raining so I took DF out for a walk. Most random "Devon-thing" of the morning was a sheep walking up the middle of the road this morning with no human minder. I suspect it belongs to the farmer's wife up the road as it's quite tame. I came home from school a few years ago to find her 3 sheep in my courtyard. When DH, another sheep owning neighbour and I tried to take them back, we got loads of verbal abuse from impatient drivers who thought we had decided to take our sheep out just to annoy them...!

Juja · 14/01/2023 16:34

@goodbyestranger Retweeted.

I once came across Mary Beard in a hotel Trieste and she was beside herself having lost her phone so she’ll be v sympathetic

Takox · 14/01/2023 20:12

@goodbyestranger I have retweeted too. Hope it turns up.

goodbyestranger · 15/01/2023 09:59

Thank you Takox.

Juja did she find the phone do you know?
