@petitebleu - so sorry to hear about your DS. I hope that some time out over Christmas may help to give him some space and time to think about his next steps.

I beat you all. I washed DD's sub fusc and inadvertently tumble dried it. It's absolutely fine! Will need an iron though.

goodbyestranger · 28/06/2023 20:35

The quality is absolute rubbish. I imagine you could do anything you liked to the sub fusc and it would be just fine - I probably wouldn't approach it with an iron though, other than super gingerly.

goodbyestranger · 28/06/2023 20:42

Apparently she won't need the gown for graduation

She can borrow from a friend - it's often necessary, for a wide variety of reasons. Mould is one, there are many others.

HewasH20 · 28/06/2023 20:57

Funny day today. Oxford was full of open day visitors as I took DD out for lunch, loaded the car and watched her hand over her keys at the Plodge.

I spoke to an Academic Registrar I know. She said the results were gradually starting to come out in college and they expect very few to face problems. Reassuring as PPE has one of the larger cohorts in her college.

ofteninaspin · 29/06/2023 08:25

That’s very reassuring @HewasH20 and I hope your DD has a lovely summer. It is so weird doing things for the last time isn’t it?

DS had his college graduand service and dinner last night - he really is about to leave Cambridge.

Gowns have ironed very well on a coolish iron.

JulesJules · 29/06/2023 10:38

D1 says she has checked with college and she won't need her short subfusc gown again, hopefully this is right but if not she's got to get another black velvet ribbon anyway so she could pick one up then.

No more news yet about the marking. A couple of her friends at C have had their graduation ceremonies already, but she doesn't know if they've had their actual results yet.

Catsrcool69 · 30/06/2023 08:48

Well DD had her graduation yesterday. It was a bit tough for her seeing some pick up actual degree certificates while she had none. But it's fair to say she was in the majority and still no indication of when result will be provided. But it was a lovely day despite that. Hard to believe this is our last time leaving C with a car load of stuff!

mutterphore · 30/06/2023 08:56

@Catsrcool69 I'm glad your DD at least got some kind of ceremony yesterday to mark her years at Cambridge. DS1 has his tomorrow and like your DD, won't have any kind of marks or degree, which is so surreal and desperately sad really.

I emailed Pro Munir asking various questions about the marking strikes....but have so far had no response.

I've got my one dress out of 'cold storage' ready for tomorrow and DS2 will also be in attendance. It's a full day thing with photos and refreshments at college in the morning then buffet lunch at college and then the fake degree ceremony in the later afternoon, after which we're out for a meal.

I do feel very proud of him and his brother no matter what happens with the marking strikes and am therefore getting into celebratory mode just to mark the end of three years - and indeed a lot longer if you include the work involved in securing a place at Oxbridge, working towards their degrees.

Catsrcool69 · 30/06/2023 09:03

@mutterphore I hope you and your DS have a good day tomorrow. As you say, regardless of marks, they have all worked so hard and dealt with some tough times to get to this point, and they deserve a celebration. I won't feel entirely settled in my mind until the degrees are awarded though, and DD still has to hope she doesn't lose her place on the Graduate scheme she is starting as a result. She's not sure if she ought to tell them now she doesn't have the degree or hold on in the hope she gets her provisional marks at least before she starts in mid July.

Malbecfan · 30/06/2023 09:50

@mutterphore I hope you have a fantastic day. Even though DD's was far from normal in 2021, her college went the extra mile to make it special and welcoming. I have a lovely photo of it on the wall in my office at school which is often admired. Hopefully you can have an extra celebration when the results finally come through!

Cliff1975 · 30/06/2023 10:45

We had our graduation at C yesterday. DS has his results but many don't. It was an amazing day, the buffet at college was incredibel, the sun shone and DS had a ball. I did really feel for the ones that didn't have their results and was very grateful we did. DS is coming home tomorrow- can hardly believe it.

pantjog · 30/06/2023 12:36

Lovely to hear of all the graduations. DD1 is in C today at her boyfriend’s graduation — his Maths part III (?) was marked and he did very well. I must say that the Cambridge way of graduating en masse as a college seems really special.

Catsrcool69 · 30/06/2023 12:46

Well, some good news as DD got sent her results as we were driving home this morning. So surprised, relieved and pleased! I so hope others also get their's soon.

mutterphore · 30/06/2023 15:15

@Catsrcool69 excellent news for your DD with her degree marked at last! I've still got a tiny shred of hope for some eleventh hour miracle for DS1 but it's fading fast and I suppose we'll just celebrate the fact he's done 3 years at Cambridge.

@Cliff1975 lovely to hear you enjoyed your DS's graduation yesterday too.

HewasH20 · 30/06/2023 18:19

I hope you have a lovely day tomorrow @mutterphore and I hope that your DS (C) doesn't share your obvious disappointment. Think of it like Christmas - you know that he will have done very well, but you just aren't quite sure yet how big a lovely present he will get.

I'm fairly sure that DD will get her results before the autumn, but she would be devastated if she thought people considered it to be a fake graduation if she hasn't.

mutterphore · 30/06/2023 21:07

Thanks @HewasH20 . I'm sure all three of us are going to have a very happy and celebratory day tomorrow and DS1 remains very relaxed about not actually getting his degree. I'm really looking forward to seeing him and feel immensely proud of all he's achieved, even if it's not yet recognised officially.

As far as I'm concerned, he's made the very best of his time at Cambridge - worked hard and played hard - and despite the pandemic and now the marking strikes, he's had a brilliant 3 years.

He's been working hard to the very last all this week, with early starts, as his choir have been making a recording and so have had to get up at 6am to travel to the place where they've rehearsed and now been recorded.

Tonight, he's at the Graduands' Dinner and then has yet another early start tomorrow for his Graduation Day. He's also celebrated with friends who've been lucky enough to get their finals marked and get their degree class already.

Presuming that one day he will actually get his exams and dissertation marked, then that provides a second celebration too at some point. So I'm definitely seeing this as a significant event in his life and aiming not to dwell on the unfairness of not actually receiving an actual Cambridge degree.

HewasH20 · 30/06/2023 21:33

Sounds like a great send off.

Catsrcool69 · 01/07/2023 07:36

@mutterphore Just wanted to send best wishes for an amazing day today. I will admit I was concerned that it would seem a bit flat and pointless without an actual degree, but it really didn't. The ceremony and celebrations just took over, and there is still a lot to celebrate. I'm sure you will all have a happy and wonderful time.

And fingers crossed those outstanding marks do arrive in the near future. (I remain furious at this situation - still corresponding with my MP to try and get some Government action to force the two sides together.)

JulesJules · 02/07/2023 10:18

D1 (Oxford) has heard from a friend doing English - they have been told they are in category 2, so can graduate with a degree and provisional class. This result will be available mid July. The classification can only go up, not down when the remaining marks come in.

We are nearly at the end of this thread!

HewasH20 · 02/07/2023 14:11

Dd received the email about categories yesterday, but not which category she is in. Good luck mini @JulesJules

Great to hear of positive news of graduation results too....really hope that they all hear soon....!

DS has graduated! A lovely day which exceeded all expectations. There was tangible excitement at college before the formalities and no distinction between those with and without results. College provided an excellent graduation tea on the lawns afterwards. A sudden downpour prompted the hasty removal of some impressively tall profiterole pyramids to the safety of Hall where we continued to celebrate into the evening.

My family’s Oxbridge journey is at an end but I will continue to follow this thread and hope that results come in very soon for DC still waiting.

Ironoaks · 02/07/2023 21:05

@ofteninaspin that's lovely to hear!

DS has received a prize for his third year results, which is a nice bonus.

He arrived safely in Switzerland, has settled in to his halls and met his supervisor. He starts in the lab tomorrow.

redgerbera · 03/07/2023 07:04

Sub fusc has been washed in the machine very successfully - thanks so much everyone for the tips!
