@petitebleu - so sorry to hear about your DS. I hope that some time out over Christmas may help to give him some space and time to think about his next steps.

@DadDadDad I was wondering where you were.

Well done to your son for being proactive and seizing the bull by the horns. I hope he enjoys the rest of his year out.

Clemenc0 · 15/03/2023 22:34

Good to hear from DS (C) today via Teams. Reports received and he is pleased - as are we. Last lecture of his 2nd term of first year today with 1 more work submittal and 2 more supervisions to go. We pick him up on Saturday. Looking forward to seeing him after 8 weeks. Looking back a year we see so much has happened in such a short time. Once, so recently, a boy and now a man, and then some - but we are biased.

PermanentTemporary · 16/03/2023 08:09

@Clemenc0 absolutely. I look back at pics of ds in his first week and he looks a lot more than 6 months older.

Apparently he may be dating... hoping he might tell me a bit more when at home! Picking him up on Mother's Day which is great for me.

ofteninaspin · 16/03/2023 11:36

Enjoy having your lads back home for a bit @Clemenc0 and @PermanentTemporary. Glad all is going well for them.

DS is about to present the preliminary findings of his final year (financial economics) dissertation to his assessors. He has permission to present remotely due to his ongoing shingles. He looked a bit pale in a Zoom call home (to practice his presentation setup) but his slides are beautiful.

Clemenc0 · 16/03/2023 11:47

@ofteninaspin Good luck to your DS for his presentation and I hope he recovers from shingles soon.

@PermanentTemporary Aha! Ours is as well and has been since halfway through the first term. We keep our curiosity to murmurs of polite interest. As do we all, I'm sure.

ofteninaspin · 16/03/2023 11:57

Ha! DS is unforthcoming re term reports and dating in equal measure but we do get snippets of info from DD (a grad working in Cambridge) who pops into college to see DS from time to time.

Panicmode1 · 16/03/2023 13:03

Ditto with our DS @ofteninaspin although I don't have a graduate DD, but she is Y13 and has been to visit...so I know there IS a girl, just not whether they are dating (officially)! Will ask about reports when he gets home tomorrow, after his last supo tomorrow morning. Can't wait. My parents went to see him at the weekend and said he's matured since Christmas, looks 'really, really happy and Cambridge life is obviously suiting him" so that was nice to hear.

Great to hear good news about all your DC. DS has had to stay up at Oxford because I have covid. He was going to come home on Saturday but train strikes mean he’s now delaying till Monday. His dissertation was due in on last day of term but he had an extension because of the all work he missed with covid last term. His tutors and supervisors advised he should have applied for longer so he’s been trying to get another doctor’s letter all week. Think it might finally be done today so he can get extension application off tomorrow. Quite worried about him but he seems to be working reasonably well. Will be relieved when he finally makes it home.
Sounds like his end of term report was good - though no details forthcoming! Pretty certain no girlfriend / boyfriend either.

Clemenc0 · 16/03/2023 14:19

DS always talks far more about his male circle (fellow mathmos, gymbuddies, a couple of former 6th form colleagues, cousin who works in Cambridge and College friends that he plays chess with - a recent passion) than gf but then I suppose that is to be expected.

goodbyestranger · 16/03/2023 23:02

Extraordinary but Northhamptonshire police contacted DD4's Oxford college this afternoon to say that someone had come in to the station and handed in her stolen suitcase. We don't know what's left in it until it's collected on Saturday but clearly enough notes to identify her as a Classics student at the college in question. We're amazed.

CinnamonJellyBeans · 16/03/2023 23:17

Wow! I have thought of that suitcase many times over the last few weeks. Hopefully her notes will be intact. Fingers crossed for your DD

pantjog · 16/03/2023 23:29

Trying to stay off here at the mo but just popped on and saw that glorious news for @goodbyestranger DD. How absolutely amazing! (I was beginning to wonder at St Anthony’s lack of action…) I very much hope that her notes and books are in there.

DahliaMacNamara · 16/03/2023 23:48

Oh, my God, @goodbyestranger ! That's truly miraculous.

Ironoaks · 17/03/2023 00:28

@goodbyestranger - Excellent news! Hopefully her notes are still inside.

Panicmode1 · 17/03/2023 03:49

Wow, @goodbyestranger what amazing news. Fingers crossed for a complete set of notes at the very least!

Clemenc0 · 17/03/2023 04:35

Oh @goodbyestranger that is very good news. As others have said, I hope that her notes are there and intact.

PermanentTemporary · 17/03/2023 06:18

Omg @goodbyestranger! That's extraordinary!

HoneyMobster · 17/03/2023 06:47

Wow. That is really good news.

MiniJellyBeans · 17/03/2023 07:34

Amazing news @goodbyestranger - this has made my day, first thing in the morning! Smile

mutterphore · 17/03/2023 08:04

@goodbyestranger absolutely brilliant news about your DDs suitcase! Amazing that it's been returned at the end of her term too. I wonder what happened to it in the meantime and I really hope she gets everything back, including the cash. However, if she gets back her academic notes, then that would be great. If and when you get more news from her and if you want to share, do let us know further details.

Malbecfan · 17/03/2023 08:44

@goodbyestranger that's great news for DD4. I hope her journey home is completely uneventful.

My DD met up with a few of the school squad last night. A certain friend has written a novel which had its UK launch. DD was asked to proof-read it 18 months or so ago, so was thrilled to be invited to the launch.

ofteninaspin · 17/03/2023 09:04

Wow, that is good news @goodbyestranger .

goodbyestranger · 17/03/2023 09:08

Thanks so much all! Goodness, I haven't specifically thanked St Anthony, quite right to remind me! We did message Mary Beard to thank her though and she sent DD a lovely pleased email so now I must see to St Anthony. I'm astonished. We think some of the notes at least must be in there along with her books, because they identify her and her college, which is how the Northamptonshire police knew to contact her through the college. The police station is question is only 18 miles from both Coventry and Leamington Spa, so it didn't travel far from the railway. I just find it extraordinary that someone bothered to take it to the police after all this time (it was handed in rather than recovered).

Malbec the book deal is beyond impressive but the friend in question has always been exceptional too. It's great :)

Malbecfan · 17/03/2023 09:11

@goodbyestranger you might want to ask MN to edit your post as you have named DD4.

Agreed, the author is definitely one of a kind!

goodbyestranger · 17/03/2023 09:23

Thanks Malbec!
