Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Hello, I posted months ago and dropped off the thread... Anyone going to Bristol offer holder day on Saturday? This is now dd's front runner but she still hasn't decided between Birmingham and Cardiff for runner up. It makes no difference tbh as Bristol made her the best offer anyway.

Congratulations to all offer holders snd fingers crossed to all those still waiting for news. Dd's boyfriend has an interview at his top choice today so we're feeling the 😬.

DonnaGiovanna · 06/03/2023 10:46

Dd has a second round of mocks next week (first lot were in December).

PettsWoodParadise · 06/03/2023 11:23

DD’s second lot of mocks start today. First lot were at very start of term. First lot of mocks they didn’t give anyone an A star so as apparently not to let then get over confident. But they leaves the bright pupils a bit in the dark. But teachers told DD she was on track to meet her favourite offer which requires an A star A A.

After mocks there is two weeks of school, then break up for Easter and then may not be back until the real exams (or may have two weeks after Easter, it is up for debate atm). Yikes!

FarAndAway456 · 06/03/2023 13:31

DC had mocks before Christmas and after half term. I am hoping that they are trying to scare them to work harder. (thank goodness it seems to be working). I am quite worried now about the gap between offers/predictions, and mock grades. Concerned that in August we will be back to square one with no plan and grades that don’t come close to the offers.

They do. DS has a reduced offer for EPQ from Exeter

Oh ok! Can I ask what the reduced offer was?

Me too. I don't know what to think. In DD's case it seems to have depressed/ demoralised her. But she will have to keep going anyway. I can't wait for this to be over its been a very stressful process and have to repeat it all again next year with Ds1 🙃

cptartapp · 06/03/2023 15:20

DS2 in the middle of mocks. Chemistry today, last one, maths tomorrow.

It was just a one grade reduction. So normal course requirement was AAA and with his EPQ is was reduced to AAB.

We have a Liverpool geography offer here

That’s the only one DD hasn’t heard from yet so that’s good to know

mightyducks · 06/03/2023 18:32

Offer from St Andrews today for Biochemical, still waiting for Imperial and Glasgow ….

mightyducks · 06/03/2023 18:33

Biochemistry that should say!

WendyWebersdrugget · 06/03/2023 18:33

Good luck to everyone with mocks. DS had his in January. Needs to pull his socks up in history! They actually do one more round in April.

Khara · 06/03/2023 19:09

My dd has just got an offer from Durham for Computer Science. It's been her first choice all along but she went to an offer holder day at Sheffield on Saturday and loved it so now has a bit of a dilemma.

KittyMcKitty · 06/03/2023 20:58

@Khara well done to your dd. Is she going to the offer holders day? My dd after procrastinating for 5 weeks or so finally firmed Durham a few days ago (tbf she was always going to but the actual process seemed very final). Sheffield is great too - dd applied there and the course looked really interesting.

Hello all. Can I ask whether parents generally go to offer holders day? My ds is going to 2 in London. We don't see that much of each other and we were thinking of making a day of it. Will I be welcome or a spare part?

Era · 07/03/2023 21:22

Loads of them take parents. Many have both parents there. Fair number of younger siblings being dragged along too

Tree543 · 07/03/2023 21:31

Most have at least one parent. I saw one teen with both parents, sibling and their dog.

Tree543 · 07/03/2023 21:32

The dog went with them into the lecture theatre for the talks.

Interesting how some DC have two sets of mocks. Just the one after Feb half term was enough. I’m pleased they didn’t have an additional at Xmas.
We’ve parents eve tomorrow - they don’t really discuss things with parents though; it’s very much aimed at the DC. So it’ll be them telling her to keep on keeping on, while I sit there sympathetically nodding.
I think once the History NEA is done this weekend she can focus on studying all three subjects. It seems to have been quite time consuming.
Are people holidaying over Easter or is it noses in books? I booked a 4 day trip for my two eldest DDs but now wondering if that was wise. They need the downtime but also the time to study. It’s hard to know at this stage what’s best.

stilldumdedumming · 07/03/2023 22:26

Oh thank you both!

Dd has a week study trip with school, first week of the holiday. After that it will all be nose in books. I.actually think having a few days break is a good idea. It's going to be all systems go until end of June amd they do need a break. Having said that, many of Dds friends went skiing at Feb half term, whilst she was studying most of it, so she hasn't had a break since Christmas. She is pretty tired..

In our case it was due to the new contingency rules. Mocks were very early in November. As a result they weren’t really reflective of pupil’s abilities and only covered some of the course. Then they announced that mock results might be used as fallback results so another set of mocks was held more recently using full papers.

DonnaGiovanna · 08/03/2023 07:22

We're going to offer holder days, @dumdedumming. Will attend general stuff about accommodation etc but leave dd alone for the departmental bits.

Any good thoughts welcome this morning - dd has her A level music recital 😬.

NotDonna · 08/03/2023 07:25

@DonnaGiovanna hope it goes ahead as planned. It’s VERY snowy here. Good luck to her. 🤞🏼🤞🏼🤞🏼🍀🍀

DonnaGiovanna · 08/03/2023 07:28

Thanks, @notdonna 🙏. No snow here on the south coast but I think it's icy on the roads so we'll have to be careful.
