Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Can’t join as my DC is next year, but I agree it seems very odd that there isn’t one!

KittyMcKitty · 02/11/2022 10:11

Haha maybe my ds’s the only dc not doing early entry 🤷‍♀️

My ds1 is fixing to get around to finishing his ucas form

Selok · 02/11/2022 19:11

My DD isn't an early applicant in fact she is trying to up one grade so she might be submitting her application by December ( a bit worried hopefully the places don't get short by this time) she has finished PS just working hard for topic tests at the moment

KittyMcKitty · 02/11/2022 20:06

fingers crossed for your dd @Selok - what subject is she looking to study? All unis have to treat students equally irrespective of when they apply (as long as it’s before the cut off date).

@SuperLoudPoppingAction hope your ds gets it finished soon - dd said it was a relief to get it done as it’s one less thing to think about. What subject is he looking to study.

Dd was adamant she didn’t want to go to the same Uni as her brother (Manchester and also doing social sciences) but I did smile at the fact that she’s pretty much chosen unis which surround where he is.

@KittyMcKitty thanks 🙏🏻 she is looking to study neuroscience and chemistry degrees, she is doing A levels biology chemistry and psychology

hellypad · 02/11/2022 21:09

Hi, my daughter is, her application is complete she just needs to press the submit button, she is hoping to study History and applying for Warwick, Birmingham, Nottingham, York and Sheffield so a few the same as your dd, her predicted are above all requirements too so fingers crossed she gets some offers.

@KittyMcKitty thanks 🙏🏻 she is looking to study neuroscience and chemistry degrees, she is doing A levels biology chemistry and psychology

Same A levels as my dd! A level chemistry is an absolute killer - dd deeply regrets taking it.

@hellypad good luck to your ds!

@KittyMcKitty it absolutely is, my DD really regretted in the beginning of Y12 I was scared that she would drop it but didn't, she got some tutoring I guess helped her understand concepts and applying them, into Year13 chemistry is now her favourite subject ( I wasn't expecting that ) doesn't need tutoring however I must add her teachers at school are very helpful and encouraging they offer free time sessions lunch times for any questions etc she says she understands much better now so she really enjoys. Biology used to be her top, now she complains it is very content heavy - not really great with essay subjects like psychology but she finds some topic's interesting.

RainBow725 · 02/11/2022 21:27

Just finished off DS UCAS form tonight so hopefully school will submit soon. Also got Sheffield, Birmingham and Lancaster on the list! And he's also trying to avoid his brother's uni! On to the waiting game now.

KittyMcKitty · 02/11/2022 21:36

Well done to your ds @RainBow725 what subject is he looking to study? Hopefully the wait won’t be too long!

Ds is hoping to submit on Friday. Wants history at Exeter

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 03/11/2022 20:42

DS is waiting on updated UCAS predictions after exams. He has written a first draft personal statement and intending to study economics. Not yet decided on where. I am worried he is leaving it all too late but trying to let him get on with it himself. Seeing to offers come in on the oxbridge thread is making me nervous.

Selok · 03/11/2022 21:01

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun same here! I am getting worried seeing other posts!

NotDonna · 04/11/2022 08:56

DD2 applying for Business. She needs to ensure her predictions are good - teachers haven’t been 100% clear. I think her PS is almost finished but needs signing off by a teacher. Hopefully both will happen next week. Probs applying to Bath, Loughborough, Birmingham & York. She’s visited first two but not the latter two.
Despite this being DD2 it’s very new/different as DD1 applied during covid, so online school and all unis closed so no open days. She also applied to apprenticeships and was very focussed on those. Her uni application was purely a back up that she pulled in Feb once she got the apprenticeship. So we’ve not been through the offer agony/joy in the same way.

KittyMcKitty · 04/11/2022 12:38

Hi Donna yes our dc1’s were the same year so no open days etc etc. Hope yr dd1 is enjoying her apprenticeship- ds has a gap year and travelled and is now happy at Manchester.

OP posts:
Selok · 04/11/2022 13:23

@NotDonna is your DD1 happy with her choice of apprenticeship? My DD wants this as a back up option but I understand it can be as daunting as the uni application process and the aftermath of it, is she still happy with her choice? Thanks

NotDonna · 04/11/2022 15:54

@selok if your DD is wanting a degree apprenticeship then they’re extremely competitive with literally thousands of applicants applying for a handful of places - sometimes only 1 or 2 places. The chance of obtaining an apprenticeship is pretty slim. They know exactly what they’re looking for and even if your DD is a genius and amazing in every way, she still may not be what they’re looking for. For my DD1 she was very aware of this so had the university option as a back-up. She wasn’t bothered about the ‘uni experience’ and was very keen to start working. The recruitment process is full on too. There’s usually around 6-8 stages, including a basic application, then various maths and IQ type tests, games, situational analysis tests, interviews, a day at an assessment centre, followed by another interview. They get rid of applicants at every stage of the process. It’s pretty rigorous and quite time consuming. She applied in Sept/October and had completed the process by Feb.
She’s in her second year and it’s been hard. The job itself isn’t difficult and everyone is friendly and supportive but there’s a lot of exams which is hard going when you’re working full time and have an hour plus commute (and there’s a lot of pressure to pass as it’s a learning contract, so you’re dismissed if you fail. Albeit not all employers do this). Her course is level 7 (masters) and the same exams as the graduates, so it was always going to be tough. She has absolutely no regrets. This was most definitely the best option for her. Hope that answers some likely questions and doesn’t put your DD off too much. They’re a great option if you’re 100% certain that’s the career path for you. The above only applies to level 6 (degree) or level 7 (masters), I’ve no idea about the apprenticeships at level 3,4,5. Level 3 is equivalent to A levels so the employer will be looking for something different and I’d hope the process less gruelling.

NotDonna · 04/11/2022 16:00

Manchester is a great city kittymckitty I’m sure he’ll love it.

Selok · 04/11/2022 16:01

@NotDonna thank you so much for your detailed response, yes you definitely answered a lot of my questions. I heard it is very competitive and a long hard process. My DD likes the idea of getting hands dirty and get on with life on the other hand still thinks the university life is also good- being independent etc the other thing is there are not much apprenticeship programs available for the subjects she wants to study- neuroscience and chemistry only lab technician type which she is not much interested in so this is another thing we need to really make a good research but I must say her first priority now is the getting the grades she needs, PS etc so we didn't really look into this option as such

NotDonna · 04/11/2022 16:09

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun has your DS looked at any potential options. DD1 was going to read economics and found it hard to narrow down choices as everywhere offers it. It was covid but she had very fortunately looked a year earlier at a few (Warwick, Bath, Reading) then just the outside of buildings and the cities (Birmingham, Nottingham, Newcastle). But I still think they really have to look carefully at the modules and make sure they like the sound of them as each course can differ enormously.
