Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Ds just got an offer for MEng computing at Imperial. Just updating, as I know there were a few others with dc applying to computing. It's a steep offer, but achievable I think.

stilldumdedumming · 08/03/2023 11:38

@DonnaGiovanna thanks- that's a good idea. Tho I'm a bit frustrated with my life and I like to sit in the taster lectures and pretend I'm going to enrol Grin

bguthb90 · 08/03/2023 12:05

Blanket email from Bristol this morning by the looks of it:

"I'm writing to let you know that your application to study at the University of Bristol is still being held as we are not yet able to make a decision"

Seems like they're in an 'indecision' race to the bottom with Durham

DonnaGiovanna · 08/03/2023 12:47

Grin @dumdedumming I went to a taster lecture on the open day and it made me desperate to go back to university.

GMH1974 · 08/03/2023 13:12

@bguthb90
We got one too today. Some people are getting offers so I think they are making offers on a ranking basis. I wonder whether they're waiting for people to firm up with them once these people have heard from places like Imperial.
Anyone know whether Bristol puts loads of people on hold rather than rejecting them? Or whether people on hold generally get rejected in the end or get offers.

CountFoscosMice · 08/03/2023 17:23

Offer from Bristol for Law!!!! We are over the moon.

NotDonna · 08/03/2023 23:26

@GMH1974 DD1 applied to Bristol for economics a couple of years ago and received an ‘on hold email’ then an offer a few days later. It was around end Feb/very very early March. She declined and chose big4 apprenticeship instead.

Huge congrats to those receiving offers!

We had parents eve tonight and mock results. Not fabulous. Unfortunately one subject has a teacher who’s not taught the subject before - EVER, at any level yet alone A2. She was new in Sept & hasn’t done the subject since her own A level at least 18 years ago. She’s taught a related Btec and is apparently lovely. Probs been thrown in at the deep end. Still, it’s nit ideal. DD has now opted out of these lessons and teaching herself as becoming more confused. So a LOT of effort has gone into this one subject and the other two have unfortunately slid! Plus she’s been focused on the History NEA due Monday. So now needs to be balance efforts.
It’s one thing getting the offers but those pesky grades are needed too! Damn! 🤞🏼🤞🏼

DonnaGiovanna · 09/03/2023 07:20

Congratulations, @countfoscosmice!

A-level recital didn't go as well as hoped - dd was thrown by an attack of sausage fingers in her first piece 😐. Teacher is allowing her to re-record today though so second time lucky...

NotDonna · 09/03/2023 11:20

Good luck to her @DonnaGiovanna

Interesting how some DC have two sets of mocks. Just the one after Feb half term was enough. I’m pleased they didn’t have an additional at Xmas.
We’ve parents eve tomorrow - they don’t really discuss things with parents though; it’s very much aimed at the DC. So it’ll be them telling her to keep on keeping on, while I sit there sympathetically nodding.
I think once the History NEA is done this weekend she can focus on studying all three subjects. It seems to have been quite time consuming.
Are people holidaying over Easter or is it noses in books? I booked a 4 day trip for my two eldest DDs but now wondering if that was wise. They need the downtime but also the time to study. It’s hard to know at this stage what’s best.

Funny you bring this up I was thinking about this walking the dog we’ve just took ours to NY Feb halt term thinking we were being good when we booked it as we knew Easter and Whit would be a no go but really Feb was a mistake too as she had mocks the first week back and didn’t revise at all for any of them because of being away / jet lag I felt like the crappest parent ever

we’ve never taken them out in term time but this is the second time we’ve took her away in the school hols only for there to be significant assessments the first week back literally on the Mon and Tues too not the back end of the week

i realise now this is the shape of things to come as in the Uni years there’ll be assignments due back straight after hols etc and between that and them having part time jobs at weekends I think we’ve reached a point that she’ll not be able to come on holiday and with us for the foreseeable

hellypad · 09/03/2023 13:31

@NotDonna I can sympathise DD has had a new English Lit teacher this year who is lovely but an awful teacher, loads of sick days, she has sat in lessons in tears telling the students about how rubbish her life is and when she does teach she just reads PowerPoints and doesn't do any discussion.

DD has had a tough week as she has had mocks but both her History and English Lit NEAs are due this month so she has been mainly working on them so has had to cram in revision this week, she is really feeling the pressure. We have our last offer holder day this Sat at Warwick so hopefully she will be able to make a decision soon.

PettsWoodParadise · 09/03/2023 13:45

I am surprised how late some schools have for submission of NEAs and I didn’t realise there was such a spread of submission dates. DD has three essay subjects, two of which each have one NEA. She drafted both over summer and submitted one shortly after getting back from October half term and then another in November well before possible Uni exams in November and interviews in December . She was glad it was out of the way before mocks in January and second lot in March (happening now). I don’t know how she would have fitted it in this side of January.

Jabiru · 09/03/2023 14:35

I sympathise about holidays and revision. DD’s sixth form college has scheduled exams straight after almost every holiday.

I did try to find this information prior to her enrolling, but college wouldn’t give it. We then went on a very expensive holiday to the USA at Easter of Y12 which was completely ruined for the whole family by DD1 staying in her room revising every day, nobody to buddy up with DD2, generally miserable.

She’s just had mocks right after half term and the lack of half term holiday combined with rejection from her preferred university has left her feeling tired and unmotivated.

wonderwoman10 · 09/03/2023 14:46

My DS has had 3 sets of mocks, November, January and upcoming up in March :(
For him its not a bad thing as he needs to be pushed, sadly revision doesn't seem to be too much of a priority!

bguthb90 · 09/03/2023 16:59

@wonderwoman10 - November, January and March mocks ! I'm not surprised he's not too keen on revision 🙂

Titsywoo · 09/03/2023 19:30

I'm a little bit concerned that DD only got a C in her psychology mock. She has been revising lots but I think she is struggling with the wording of some questions. Looking at getting her a tutor for a little bit of extra help.

Student Finance all sorted already and the paperwork has come through agreeing the course and maintenance loans.

Just waiting on that last offer (or not) so she can choose her firm and insurance.

NotDonna · 09/03/2023 20:04

@Titsywoo I do wonder if they mark them a little harshly hoping they’ll work even harder. Has the teacher given her feedback regarding where she can improve?

NotDonna · 09/03/2023 20:09

I didn’t realise you can do student finance prior to firming & insuring.

Titsywoo · 09/03/2023 21:03

NotDonna · 09/03/2023 20:09

Yes you absolutely can. It opened up last week and from what I have read the sooner you apply the better! You can change the uni at any time.

Thingshavechanged · 09/03/2023 22:02

Finally offer for DD from Durham A-star A A for history - which I think is standard? Would like to attend an open day but not sure when next one is. Anyway it’s good news although not sure it’ll end up being her choice.

bguthb90 · 09/03/2023 22:32

Congratulations @Thingshavechanged.

Durham's final offer holder days are on 21/22 March - not ideal for those of us whose DC are still awaiting responses.

DonnaGiovanna · 10/03/2023 07:35

I'm surprised so many universities don't do a summer term offer holders day. We'd like to look at Cardiff but no chance as they finish in March and so far have all clashed with non-negotiable stuff.

Thingshavechanged · 10/03/2023 08:28

@bguthb90 thank you - and wishing your DD a speedy offer.
I think it makes sense to have offer holders’ days earlier so that DC can decide before acceptance and accommodation deadlines, and also see universities during term time. But it would be great to have a deadline for all offers to be sent out within ?2 weeks of UCAS application closing, so they can plan which offer holders to attend based on full knowledge of options, and it doesn’t drag on into the run up to exams etc.

They have their exams in the summer term though. Offer holders days are a sales pitch. It’s to persuade your DC to pick that offer. It’s not something they have to go to.

DonnaGiovanna · 10/03/2023 11:49

I guess so, but she has one in Birmingham towards the end of April so I thought maybe others might join them in trying to mop up any ditherers.
