Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Train carriage - she was rejected from Warwick and Leeds and holds offers from Newcastle and Sheffield.

GCSE 999999888
A level predicted A*AA

‘senior student’ at college
selected to represent college in Poland recently
work experience in law
qualified lifeguard and swimming teacher
lots of extra curricular (piano grades all
distinctions, rowing, D of E).

just very, very competitive, and much more that we thought!

not sure what else we could do. Sadly live in a reasonably good postcode….

Can I ask if that stuff was in her personal statement? If so then I think that was the problem I’m afraid and she’s been given poor advice about what to include in her statement. A excellent ps for law will have been mainly about why she wants to do law. Not about extra curricular stuff at all apart from the work experience. Don’t worry though, Newcastle and Sheffield are both perfectly good universities to have been to for a career in law. I’m a lawyer and have involvement in recruitment

Also simply the numbers applying, all of whom will have a cluster of A and A star predictions

My DS is still waiting for any offers for comp sci 😩. I'm starting to feel anxious for him but trying not to show it.

He had a Cambridge post interview rejection but nothing else.

Does anyone else have comp sci offers for St As, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Durham? He's Scottish for quota-purposes.

Thanks!

They are four of the late offer universities unfortunately. St Andrews offer holder day is the start of April so most applicants are expecting movement in March. If you look on the offer spreadsheet on TSR the vast majority of offers so far are to international applicants.

Jabiru · 22/02/2023 07:28

Her PS was about why she wants to study law!

Jabiru · 22/02/2023 07:29

(But good to know those are ok universities, thank you!)

bguthb90 · 22/02/2023 07:54

@Era I disagree re your comment about personal statements.

It's acceptable/recommended to include information relating to personal achievements/responsibilities etc - the key is to ensure:

  1. You relate them to your suitability for choice of course,
  2. They are secondary, in precedence, compared to the information you provide regarding your motivations for your choice of course.
NotDonna · 22/02/2023 08:40

Is she waiting for a 5th @Jabiru?

NotDonna · 22/02/2023 08:45

The waiting is hard! I know Bath has said to expect nothing til March/April and they hope to be done by 28th April but it does feel like forever. DD is incredibly relaxed about it and has said no news is good news. She knows they have two reviewers and it will take a while.

I’m sure all schools give slightly different advice. At our school the kids are told to remove anything related to DofE, music exams (unless degree is music related), sport (unless degree is sport related) etc. It’s all completely irrelevant to a very academic degree course.

CaptainCaveMum · 22/02/2023 10:02

Anyone else’s DC still waiting to hear from University of Bristol?
DS actually did early entry so we’ve been waiting to hear since October… tumbleweed from Bristol.

Jabiru · 22/02/2023 10:04

She’s waiting for a fifth yes

bguthb90 · 22/02/2023 12:53

@Era - it's actually UCAS advice to include a section on personal skills and achievements:

www.ucas.com/undergraduate/applying-university/writing-personal-statement/how-write-personal-statement

Tbh, it all seems pretty irrelevant though given the number of universities who've openly said they don't use personal statements nowadays

bguthb90 · 22/02/2023 12:55

@CaptainCaveMum - yes, DS has been on hold since early December at Bristol.

Also waiting for Durham (latest update last week was they're aiming for 21 April to have responded to all) and Edinburgh (radio silence from them)

londonmummy1966 · 22/02/2023 13:15

DD got an offer from Cardiff yesterday which is her preference - unconditional as she has her grades in hand. So just waiting on Durham now but tbh it is a long shot which will require them to take the circumstances in which she took one of her A level papers into account so I'm not hopeful. TBH the accommodation situation in Cardiff is a lot better than Durham.... She's booked to look around Nottingham at the end of next month before she makes her mind up.

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 22/02/2023 13:17

@Aurea Ds is still waiting too for compsci. He also was pooled at Cambridge but not picked from the pool. Applied to St Andrews and Edinburgh in Scotland. Just about to interview for Imperial 🤞🏽

Aurea · 22/02/2023 13:53

Thanks Laundry Monster.

Best wishes for the Imperial interview. Let us know how it goes.....

CaptainCaveMum · 22/02/2023 14:10

Thanks @bguthb90

NotDonna · 22/02/2023 16:09

Yes good luck for the imperial interview!!

Titsywoo · 22/02/2023 22:48

Haven't posted for a while as still waiting for the final offer from Exeter.

Dd is pretty much 100% set on putting Cardiff as her firm. She spent some of half term there with her boyfriend and viewed some of the private halls. Since much of the Cardiff Uni accommodation is a bus ride away, and we would all feel more comfortable if she was in the centre of town, she decided private halls will be the best option. That way she can get a job in the city centre and get to and from that easily and the same with the Uni. Just a personal preference.

We have just booked her a room at Eclipse private halls in a 6 bed flat. If she doesn't get her place there we just need to show proof within 3 days and the booking will be cancelled. I think DD feels more secure now she knows she has a good place to stay if she gets in.

She has just done her mocks and is now planning a revision timetable for the May/June exams. I do hope she gets the grades she needs. She has worked so hard.

NotDonna · 22/02/2023 23:12

That all sounds very sensible @Titsywoo Do you think she’ll firm Cardiff before hearing from exeter then? If she chooses Exeter after all can you still cancel Cardiff accom?

SlightlyJaded · 23/02/2023 14:07

All five offers in now, thank goodness.

Hope those waiting get what they need soon. It's so bloody stressful.

troppibambini6 · 23/02/2023 16:44

@Jabiru she got rejected from law at Leeds? This year? Is she an international student?
Only Leeds law haven't offered yet?.....as far as I'm aware it's the end of March.

Could I ask where the spreadsheet is on TSR? I’ve looked and I can’t find it anywhere but I think I might be looking in the wrong place.
DS has 3 offers but still not heard from his first choice. He actually applied for 2 courses there (and is regretting it) as he was so desperate to go. They are both linked but one is a slightly different spec. I just wanted to find out how many people had offers or rejections but I can’t seem to find it.

NotDonna · 23/02/2023 20:34

@mrsconradfisher which uni?
my DD applied for 2 courses at same uni too (first choice) and yet to hear but they’ve said March/April.
