Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

@Thepaintedgarden i went with DD yesterday to York as she wanted me to. There were concurrent parent talk but she wanted me to listen to her talks as I apparently remember different stuff. I only saw one kid without a parent in our talks and a couple of boyfriend/girlfriend duos. Loads of parents often both.
@KittyMcKitty lancaster is a pain to get to for us. We drove up for the open day as trains were bus replacement and it still took us 9 hours without even a wee stop. Loads of road works, closures and just a terribly busy Fri afternoon traffic despite leaving before lunch. Quite pleased it was scrubbed from her list as wouldn’t want to do that drive ever again! To be fair it is very north and we are very south!

Waiting for Warwick and Durham here. PPE, home student, non contextual. Expecting a long wait…

@IheartNiles DD is also waiting for PPE from Warwick, and also from Exeter. She has offers from her other three unis. She’s unsure of her favourite yet, and she’s yet to see Exeter, so if she gets an offer it’s definitely one for an offer holder day.

Good luck to her. I haven’t seen any Warwick or Durham PPE offers on forums other than obviously contextual. DD has Exeter, York so far but wants one of those as her insurance.

@NotDonna @KittyMcKitty I agree.
I went to Lancaster and didn't finish as I just chose badly.

It's is remote, it's absolutely freezing too, it's based around what's called the spine (sure you know this already) which acts as a wind tunnel.
Obviously loads of people had a great time but as a big city kid it wasn't for me.

That said it was the 90s and I was living in Manchester heavily into the whole Madchester scene and living g my best teenage life.
Then I went to a small town uni. I should definitely have chosen a big city.

Which is why when dd said she wanted to be in a big northern city didn't want to entertain lots of really really good unis because of location I totally supported her.

NotDonna · 29/01/2023 18:23

If you’re based in Manchester, Lancaster is not a bad option as it’s not too far and very few study in home town.

KittyMcKitty · 29/01/2023 18:26

Yes my ds is at Manchester so I imagine it’s v different!

DS's application has been in for nearly two weeks now so not long in the grand scheme of things but I am already impatient! He got two offers in the first two days or so (both standard) and has had acknowledgements from all 5 - again quite quickly. He has one offer holders day invitation. I would like to know when all the offer holders days are so that we can plan as I think he would go to visit all the universities that offer him a place so he can make an informed decision.

One of the universities is St Andrews so I am expecting a long wait there but imagined that the other two we haven't heard from would be in touch by now. Probably they had a big flurry of applicants as the deadline loomed and they are working their way through them all. Good luck to all of those in a similar position.

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/01/2023 19:56

St andrews offer holder day is 1st April

bguthb90 · 29/01/2023 20:40

Who are the other two you're waiting on @SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun ?

My DS got first offer on 1st December after submitting UCAS on 29th November. 2 months later we're still waiting on Durham, Edinburgh and Bristol, who are all notoriously slow. Be prepared for a longer wait if your two are any of those - or UCL and Imperial

KittyMcKitty · 29/01/2023 20:42

Some university have different subjects on different days.

durhams are on days strikes have been announced for sigh am going to phone them tomorrow to see if they can give clarification as it’s a lot of money to fork out for train tickets and hotels if they’re going to cancel them.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 29/01/2023 21:01

It's Southampton and Liverpool. Liverpool does have some dates on its website and it looks as though there would be a choice but I can't find anything for Southampton. Thanks for the St Andrews info - looking at the Student Room spreadsheet for last year there were loads of decisions made in April - quite a few in March too to be fair.

troppibambini6 · 29/01/2023 21:07

@NotDonna yes it's not so bad to get from Manchester it's more the social side that wouldn't appeal to her.
She was wants lots of clubs, bars and restaurants. Which isn't what Lancaster is about although a great uni.
She wouldn't stay in her home city either. She applied to (in order of preference)
Leeds
Newcastle
Sheffield
Liverpool
Manchester (just filling a space really)

I've just gone with it to be honest as she has very definite ideas about what she wants. It's her that's going to be living there at the end of the day I suppose....

HasaDigaEebowai · 29/01/2023 21:26

Lancaster isn’t a heaving metropolis but it has eight bars just on campus (one for each college) plus the student nightclub the sugar House in town and there are two other normal clubs too and loads of pubs. It’s a party uni even though it’s campus.

troppibambini6 · 29/01/2023 22:14

@HasaDigaEebowai i know and I agree. But she wanted a big city.
Ive had many good nights at the sugar house!

Hi all, my DD is still waiting for Durham, St A and Edinburgh - I know they are all notoriously late, but I hope she gets something soon as it’s a bit demotivating doing mocks without something tangible to work towards, as she is not sure about offers she has. I don’t think we necessarily made best choices but here we are…she has good GCSE grades (10 x9 - top of her year group albeit with TAGs)/A level predictions (4xAstar), is at a state school that hasn’t sent many to Oxbridge/Russell Group, so I assume it’s the PS that let her down? Or she aimed too high? Well done to all those with offers - I’m keeping fingers crossed for at least one more offer.

I wouldn't worry. We are also waiting on St Andrews. They take forever. I lurk on the St Andrews page on The Student Room and there is very little coming through. Mainly international and contextual students plus a few for applicants with grades in hand. There's a spreadsheet showing offers and there are hardly any RUK offers yet.

Thingshavechanged · 09/02/2023 14:39

Thanks that is reassuring- I’ll check out TSR.

SlightlyJaded · 09/02/2023 23:50

Can I join? DD is first in our family to go to University, so we are completely new to the process and a bit green. I am bracing myself for the accomodation scramble though - I have learned that much!

She is desperately waiting on her first choice (Newcastle) and I wondered if anyone had offers for Geog from Newcastle yet? She did only get her UCAS form in by the skin of her teeth so it's only been about three weeks, but she is PACING! She has had offers from Leeds and Manchester so we are waiting on Liverpool, Newcastle and York.

sevilla99 · 10/02/2023 07:40

@SlightlyJaded joining in simply to share your pain! I also have a DD waiting on Geography at Newcastle. Has offers from Southampton, Worcester and Northumbria. Also waiting on Cardiff. Newcastle has two offer holders' days in half term and I really wish they'd get a move on so we can book one of them. We're 5 hours away, so there's no other time we'll be able to get there.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 10/02/2023 08:40

Neither Geography nor Newcastle but we are still waiting for Liverpool amongst others nearly four weeks after the application. I guess it means they are a bit oversubscribed and looking at the personal statements. Hope Newcastle come back to you soon. I heard of someone who had a quick turnaround there for Computer Science but every subject is different.

LionsandLambs · 10/02/2023 10:41

Just waiting for Durham now but will be same grades as her favourite- so once offer days over in March (to choose insurance) she’ll confirm and withdraw from Durham if no offer by then.

KittyMcKitty · 11/02/2023 10:40

For those waiting on Durham the offers are definitely coming out. Dd - uk, non contextual, applied I think mid November- got hers the day after UCAS closed.

OP posts:
NotDonna · 11/02/2023 17:04

DD has just realised that L’boro offer holders is the weekend before her history NEA is due in. She’s thinking she’ll be wanting to finalise that rather than go to offer holders. Such a shame. I think that’s the only day they have unfortunately.

bguthb90 · 11/02/2023 17:33

@KittyMcKitty - If Durham offers are coming out, they're coming out glacially slow.

Looks like there's going to be an awful lot of applicants who receive offers too late to apply for their offer holders' open days, the final one being in mid March

LaundryPrincess · 18/02/2023 09:42

Has anyone heard from UCL, KCL or Bristol yet? Law.
