Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

I didn’t realise this post was here, can I join too?
DS1 applied back in November and had 3 of out of 5 offers within a matter of days. Typically the one he actually wants he still hasn’t heard from. He has applied to do Sports Science and is waiting for Loughborough. He is predicted 3 A’s but they want 1 A star and 2 A’s so not holding out much hope. The other Uni’s he has applied for he no longer wants to go to so (downside of applying early under pressure from 6th form) so he needs to wait for Loughborough to make a decision before deciding what to do next.

Idontknow88 · 28/01/2023 09:31

So good to find others in this long process! My DD has offers from 4 including Durham before Xmas which really pleasantly surprised her. She is waiting for Edinburgh - anyone heard if any Edinburgh offers and when might be normal for them to come?

petitebleu · 28/01/2023 10:47

Joining here as DS is waiting for offers after a very last minute UCAS application. He has already done a term at Cambridge, which just didn't suit him, and has changed direction completely. I'm worried that he has chosen a very competitive course so very nervously waiting to hear - expecting a long wait! He's got great A levels in the bag but I suspect not great enough.

IheartNiles · 28/01/2023 10:54

Waiting for Warwick and Durham here. PPE, home student, non contextual. Expecting a long wait…

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/01/2023 11:11

Idontknow, ds1 had an Edinburgh offer for chemistry.
I think they do them in waves.

Idontknow88 · 28/01/2023 11:32

Thanks superloud. We will wait for the batches to come! Expecting to wait a while I think.

mightyducks · 28/01/2023 12:20

Still waiting for Imperial, Glasgow and St Andrews for Biochemistry…. Feels like it’s been a very long wait already !

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 28/01/2023 13:58

St andrews havent got back to ds1 either.

londonmummy1966 · 28/01/2023 16:35

I've been lurking here a bit but DD has now put her application in for History and has had unconditional offers from Nottingham and Holloway (gap year application). Her favourite is Cardiff so have fingers crossed. She's also applied to Durham and Bristol but she has a dodgy grade in her History A level as she was unable to finish a paper for medical reasons and so only qualified for special consideration of 3% instead of it being based on the rest of her work as would have been the case if she'd not attempted to sit it. Both Durham and Bristol told her to apply but I'm not sure she's in with a chance tbh. Also I suspect that they will be a while as that sort of offer is likely to be made on the gathered field. She's doing an EPQ but is hoping not to get any offers that are conditional on that as she is recovering from pretty major surgery so there is a risk she won't finish.

She's obviously pleased to be going somewhere but is a bit stressy waiting on Cardiff atm.

NotDonna · 28/01/2023 18:32

@londonmummy1966 that sounds a bit stressful and complicated. Fingers crossed for her!
DD likes York (offer holder day today) phew! She’s now thinking she may prefer it to Loughborough but not 100% sure.

KittyMcKitty · 28/01/2023 18:50

Welcome @londonmummy1966 hope your dd hears from Cardiff, Durham and Bristol soon.

pleased your dd liked York @NotDonna my dd really likes it. Can I ask what time the offer holders day started (I’m trying to convince dd we’ll go in the morning)

Remember DD has never visited York (city nor uni) so worth it for us. Less sure if you’ve already done an open day. The first intro was at 10 then repeated at 11; accom talk at 10.30 then repeated at 1130. We did 1030 accom talk followed by 11am intro, then visited a sample room, had lunch in one of the uni bars, then another sample room. Afternoon was dept talks. 130-150 they had sandwiches etc (we’d eaten already), 1.50 was the course info; followed by either tours of the dept or meander around the stands or talk on year in industry/overseas. We stayed for the talk as DDs dealbreaker is year in industry/overseas (ideally both). Was incredibly worthwhile.
We used public transport student style. So train across London, up to York & bus to uni (obvs stayed o/n in centre which she wouldn’t do). Bus system v easy. On the bus back lots of offer holders chatting and because I’ve big ears and nosey the conversations I heard they’d all done slightly differing things with their depts including sample lectures/lessons/workshops. Everyone seemed to think it worthwhile.

NotDonna · 28/01/2023 20:53

DD received the programme with timings about a week or so ago and then yesterday the locations of talks etc.

KittyMcKitty · 28/01/2023 21:47

Thank you. Dd wants to go for the Dept sessions - I’m reluctant to go day before as we probably won’t be able to get train till 6 (due to my work) - it’s then half an hour to Paddington etc etc so will be really late. Whereas we can get the 6.30 train on Sat and be in by 9.45 so will save the ££ on hotel. Durham will need an overnight stay so am keen to save some money.

Weve been to York twice but dd wants to go to the Dept sessions and see it when students are there. And it’ll prob be her insurance.

Which accommodation did yr dd like? Of the ones we’ve visited (quite a few) dd likes Alcuin - sociology is on east campus so she thought it would be good to live on main campus

OP posts:
DrMadelineMaxwell · 28/01/2023 22:16

My dd1 lived on campus for all 3 years at York, in Vanbrugh due to it being closest to the history dept. She loved it.

NotDonna · 29/01/2023 06:54

I doubt DD will have much choice over accom as York will be her insurance IF Bath offer and although insurance ppl can register for accom same as firms in mid Feb we don’t think bath will have decided by then. In their letter they said they’re aiming for between March & April and by latest 28th April. So I guess a lot of York’s accom will have been snapped up by end of April.
DD will be in the Business & Society building so was thinking the East campus or maybe Alcuin/Derwent on West. We saw band 3 self catered/shared bathroom in Derwent (ok size rooms but kitchen badly designed - very narrow & I can’t imagine more than 2 pppl trying to cook, let alone 12!). Also Vanbrugh catered/ensuite which had huge square kitchen with table for socialising in centre - seems odd this was catered.
DD was thinking catered (to socialise, she’s a great cook) and shared bath but the east campus is self catered bar the one day a week dinner. We didn’t have time to see east campus but they are online.
I’m really hoping Bath offer even if it means waiting til end April.

DinkyDaisy · 29/01/2023 07:35

I wonder if ds got offer for Bath as deferring a year. Or subject of course.
When we went to York we were shocked by one lot of accommodation. Unless remembering wrong, Vanbrugh catered? Access through public building, old dreary concrete staircase, and run down looking rooms. And expensive.
Ds preferred 99 pound, self catering rooms on a campus 15 minute walk away (forget name).
Surrey is all self catering and he has yet to look at Bath accommodation.

User76765 · 29/01/2023 08:34

Lancaster offed holder day yesterday. Ds now in a pickle because it’s joint honours. One dept blew him away, the other completely turned him off.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 29/01/2023 10:30

Vanbrugh has a mix of shabby old concrete, mostly catered, accommodation and some really nice blocks with rabbit infested lawns which are self catered. Dd lived on Donald Barron Court. See view out of window... 😄

Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry
NotDonna · 29/01/2023 10:51

We didn’t see the shabby Vanbrugh ones but the ones at Donald Barron Court. the exact same as your photo @DrMadelineMaxwell

Well done to your DS @DinkyDaisy for the Bath offer regardless of the why! He’s got plenty of time to work out accom if he’s deferring. Is he still thinking surrey 1st choice though?

oh no what a pain @User76765 has the course changed since applying?

NotDonna · 29/01/2023 10:53

Ignore me, @User76765 i didn’t read your post properly. Still annoying. Is Lancaster first choice? Where else is he considering?

DinkyDaisy · 29/01/2023 10:59

At present Surrey still first choice but encouraging him to go in with an open mind to offer days and lots of questions. Both offer days in half term.

Thepaintedgarden · 29/01/2023 11:05

We didn't go to an offer holder's day with dc1. Dc2 is only planning to go to one. I'm going to go too as we will stay with family and catch up for the weekend. In terms of parents at the offer holder's day itself - has anyone been? Was it useful? I don't feel I need to understand anything about uni life etc (have done it myself, have an older child doing it now albeit at a different uni) - but don't want to miss anything that might be helpful either. Apparently there are "parent sessions" that I could attend - or I could go shopping 😉 or catch up more with family.
Any thoughts?

KittyMcKitty · 29/01/2023 14:29

We didn’t go to offer days either with dc1 - it was Covid so no open days or anything.

DD wants to go to Durham (her first choice) and York and Lancaster - one of which will be her insurance- we’ve not been to Lancaster and as it’s quite remote it’s probably important that we visit (am dreading it though as there’s engineering works on the train tracks near Lancaster so replacement bus nightmare so will need to drive).
