Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Not necessarily as your insurance (or indeed your firm) may or may not take lower grades for eg if your firm was UCL and your insurance QMUL with both asking AAA the chances are high QMUL may take you with a dropped grade. But if you’re predicted AAA for eg I would say it’s madness putting something at BBC as insurance! Also the lower tariff courses will most likely be in clearing.

I think that’s a really strange strategy. Unless you’re eligible for a contextual offer they’re extremely likely to offer at their standard offer grades.

if you have a firm and an insurance both at aaa and you get aaa then you go to your firm. If you get AAB then you go to neither unless they haven’t filled their places and they’re really keen on you. The higher tariff universities usually go to clearing with their standard grades not with reduced grades since they know they will fill their courses without having to drop.

nobody is saying you put down a bbc as an insurance if your firm is aaa but most will have an AAB as an insurance

i genuinely think she should discuss her choices with school. DSs school would certainly have tried to dissuade anyone who didn’t put down an insurance.

DinkyDaisy · 18/12/2022 15:33

Nervous at my ds preferring a BBB University when predicted A star, A, B (has A star in epq already...). I do respect why he likes it though (Surrey).
If he sticks to choice, insurance choice likely to be tricky...
Hope offer days help...

lovefizzycolabottles · 18/12/2022 16:33

Great news on all the offers! DD got an offer from St Andrews two days ago (economics) so maybe they won’t be so late this year…? We were expecting a long (painful) wait…

ACJane · 18/12/2022 17:28

How exciting - is St A her first choice?
Is she in Scotland or the rest of the UK?
There is someone on Student Room who got an econ offer earlier this week.
I'm hoping January will see a flurry of activity from Durham and St A!

Usee8789754 · 18/12/2022 18:14

I hope they start to look at history at St A. The process of leaving everything until late means that it's hard to decide what to do with those universities that release accommodation early.

lovefizzycolabottles · 18/12/2022 19:23

@ACJane i think it’ll be her first choice (she is RUK) but is still waiting on a couple. Looked really tough for some people on last years chat with really late offers or rejections so hope that this year is different.

NotDonna · 18/12/2022 21:31

Great news on the St Andrews offers!!

@Usee8789754 i know what you’re saying and having a safety net of an insurance is useful but sometimes the safety option is hard to find. DD could only find York that offered ABB for her course & that’s bc they’ve generously dropped a grade for core maths. Everywhere is AAB or above. Her fave is AAB. We couldn’t find anywhere else that offered the same course at ABB. The courses at BBB are significantly different with emphasis on different aspects that she’d not want. If it wasn’t for York she’d have had to apply for two at AAB and hope that if she missed her grades that one of them would still offer. I have friends where it’s worked for their DC and others where it hasn’t.
@DinkyDaisy if Surrey remains his fave then he won’t need an insurance. Especially with his predictions. He could put down a higher grade (Bath/York) a bit weird but not unknown. Given he’s deferring IF he didn’t meet Surrey’s offer he can reapply next year with grades in hand.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 18/12/2022 22:19

Wow - lovefizzycolabottles, that’s exciting news re St Andrew’s. What are your DD’s predictions if you don’t mind me asking? Economics at St Andrew’s is on DS’s list and we were imagining a long wait too.

Thingshavechanged · 18/12/2022 23:21

@Usee8789754 I agree it’s risky and probably ill-advised. The form is in now so it’s too late to change, and the whole process was very last minute and fraught, so I don’t think anyone has the appetite to change it now. The universities offering AAB or lower just didn’t appeal for a variety of reasons (not all logical or well founded I'm sure) - course, location, put off on open days etc. and it felt odd to throw one in almost randomly. Her predictions are 3xA star and an A, and GCSEs were all 9s, so I hope there’s some chance she’ll get offers and attain them. If not, it’s back to the drawing board - either via clearing, gap year or deciding against university all together. Great to hear more offers coming in - congratulations to @lovefizzycolabottles amazing to get an offer from StA for economics. I tried and failed to persuade my DD to go for economics. Unfortunately I think a tedious A level course has put her off.

Yoloohno · 18/12/2022 23:38

Well the application went in last week, no increase in the predicted grades so Dd is hoping that the offers will come in.

NotDonna · 19/12/2022 06:41

Good luck to all those who have just sent in their applications.

lovefizzycolabottles · 19/12/2022 08:07

@SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun her predictions are 4 A stars. Fingers crossed that your DS hears soon.

@Usee8789754 thats a shame on the tedious course - my DS felt the same when he did economics A level, DD has a great teacher which I think has helped a lot.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 19/12/2022 09:05

Thank you and wow - that’s an amazing set of predictions 🙂. Looking at last years St Andrew’s offer spreadsheet on the Student room I see that they will offer earlier to those with outstanding applications and then the flurry of rejections with a few offers thrown in comes later. DS is going to be predicted 3 As. The application isn’t in yet but I suspect we will be in the waiting group.

Is there a spreadsheet for this year at St A?

Yoloohno · 19/12/2022 14:39

Well we have our first offer in, a very good contextual offer from Leeds Beckett, not her first choice but she’s only got to get 88 UCAS points and no mention of her EPQ already counting. As she’s working currently at BBC.

She’s happy she’s got an offer in and that the saga of the last week has been resolved and that she won’t have to do a foundation year or go through clearing. She’s been stressed about it all.

Lets see if anything else comes in this week.

Yes there is. Here

DinkyDaisy · 19/12/2022 17:02

Well, have all offers in...AAB Bath, ABB York, ABB Essex, BBB Royal Holloway, BBB Surrey.
Politics for Surrey and Politics and IR for all the others.
Booked Surrey offer day but others don't seem bookable yet...

Surrey favourite for course content after open days. It really details them. But must visit Bath again as bit of a rush as did Bristol in the afternoon. (Bath beautiful). Course details less clear on website at Bath.
Essex as well for a visit as course of interest.
Not visited RH and loved York City but not so struck by campus...

mightyducks · 19/12/2022 21:41

My DD got her first offer today after over 2 weeks, Biochemistry at KCL AAA offer, her second choice so very exciting! Didn’t think anything would come in so close to Xmas but there you go. One down , four to go!

Yoloohno · 19/12/2022 21:52

Omg another 2 offers in, derby and Northampton have also offered.

Derby T her predicted grades with a possible reduction and Northampton have offered in at D,D,D down from 104 UCAS points that they say was the tariff.

im starting to think she’s sold herself short with her choices. But she’s waiting on her top 2 to get back to her.

The application only went in Friday morning.

I think we’re a little bit in shock at the speed.

Well done to all others that have had offers today.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 19/12/2022 22:04

Exciting to hear that offers are coming in. Well done to Yoloohno's DD, Mightyduck's DD and DinkyDaisy's DS - its all happening 🙂

WendyWebersdrugget · 20/12/2022 00:21

Wow! Totally second that - impressed by offers coming in fast!
UCAS form just waiting to be sent off by school now so nothing we can do except wait!
