Is there an applying for 2023 thread which isn’t early entry

1000 replies

KittyMcKitty · 01/11/2022 20:35

I can see there’s the Oxbridge one but dd isn’t an early entry applicant.

anyway she’s finally submitted her UCAS I know school have added the reference so imagine it’ll be off in a day or so 🤞🏻

Shes applying for sociology and has applied to:
Durham
York
Lancaster
Sheffield
Birmingham

her predicted grades comfortably exceed all the standard offers so I hope she gets some offers (and please please please let Durham offer!!).

anyone else waiting?

Good to see offers still rolling in just before the Christmas holidays! Congrats to all those whose DC have got an offer(s).

Welcome @Thingshavechanged hopefully your DD won't be waiting too long for the offers 🤞

hotmilkytea · 15/12/2022 22:08

@HappySonHappyMum great that your DD got her first choice offer. Are the offer grades particularly stringent and that's why she hopes they might include the EPQ?

I totally see why she prefers a points offer - it gives a bit more flexibility!

hellypad · 15/12/2022 22:13

DD got an offer from York today too, AAA, she is really happy. 2 down 3 to go.

hellypad · 15/12/2022 22:15

@Chickydoo our dcs have got both their offers from the same unis Smile

HappySonHappyMum · 15/12/2022 22:27

@hotmilkytea The other offers are all points offers that include her EPQ points so she can get the points from 3 and a half A level if you see what I mean. The offers are all doable - it's just that the points offers took the pressure off a little - and I'm all for that!

hotmilkytea · 15/12/2022 23:13

@HappySonHappyMum I agree re the points offers! Hopefully they update the offer for her 🤞 Which uni is her first choice?

HappySonHappyMum · 16/12/2022 07:20

The University of Chichester - it's really lovely, we've visited twice, on an Open Day and at Interview on a normal working day and the atmosphere and feel of the place was still the same, which is a really good thing.

Thingshavechanged · 16/12/2022 07:34

@hotmilkytea thank you!
DD got an offer from Exeter for 3 As (History) which bears out the open day information that they don’t look at personal statements.
I think it’s going to be a long wait for the others bar Strathclyde.

Thingshavechanged · 16/12/2022 07:54

Sorry to confuse with university choices - I was out of date - it’s Durham St A, Edinburgh, Exeter and Leeds. Things did indeed change a lot during tortured decision making period!

Which is the insurance out of those? Leeds? DS also applying for history. Has an offer from Exeter and is waiting on St andrews.

HappySonHappyMum · 16/12/2022 13:05

@hotmilkytea The Uni updated my DDs offer today it is now 'This offer is subject to you obtaining grades BBB or ABC at A-Level. May also include points from your EPQ if necessary.' Think it was definitely worth sending an email to admissions and querying the offer - the additional EPQ points make this offer far more favourable now.

ChiefDogsbody · 16/12/2022 13:30

Hi all, still waiting for Leeds but in the meantime Hull have changed their offer to unconditional. DS has not taken this well and thinks they must be desperate 🙄 tried telling him its because they've recognised how brilliant he is.... anyone got any thoughts?

Thingshavechanged · 16/12/2022 18:05

@Usee8789754 thats a good question….I think they are all AAA or higher. Hoping if necessary Exeter or Leeds may be somewhat flexible.

hotmilkytea · 18/12/2022 07:37

@HappySonHappyMum excellent news that they updated the offer, flexibility is always good, plus the fact they listened to you DD says many good things about the uni. Sounds like Chichester will be great for her!

@Thingshavechanged you never know, the wait might not be terrible. There has been a Durham offer on this thread already. Not sure if anyone has Edinburgh or St A yet....

@ChiefDogsbody wow, great that Hull changed it to an unconditional. Clearly your DS in an exceptionally strong candidate. Is Hull under serious consideration for him, or is it lower down his priority list?

End of term catch up, where are we at?

Has anyone's DC recently submitted? Anyone still waiting?

Any offers in the last couple of days?

cptartapp · 18/12/2022 07:59

DS2 offer for Mchem at Sheffield. That's four in. Still waiting on Nottingham - collected his brother from there yesterday for Xmas.

Still waiting for the school. They sent an e mail round saying we wouldn't be disadvantaged by submitting in January which is true. Slight bonus being that DS could add an end of term achievement to his personal statement. No good for my impatience though. Hopefully I will be able to update with some more interesting news in 3 to 4 weeks time................

DinkyDaisy · 18/12/2022 09:08

Ds now has offers from Bath AAB, York ABB, and Surrey BBB. Surrey is his current favourite but he will go to a few offer days to be sure.

Exeter might be slightly below. DS is predicted three A stars. His Exeter offer was the standard but had a grade reduction with an A at EPQ.

Has she submitted all of them? If not then I’d change one. It’s risky not to have any insurance offer.

KittyMcKitty · 18/12/2022 09:32

I disagree with the concept that it’s risky not to have an insurance offer. You can only keep 2 offers - your firm and insurance and they should both be courses you would be delighted to do. Yes I agree the insurance should be lower than the firm ideally but only if they are courses the dc would actually do. We see if every year on MN dc gets into insurance but it’s not a course they want to do etc etc. Out of the 4 offers my dd is currently holding the 2 she would keep are ABB (although 1 is BBB if she firms but it would probably be her insurance). So she would be holding 2 offers of the same grades (If Durham offer that will be a higher one and she would firm it). Her feelings are that if she doesn’t get into those then she would look at clearing and if nothing there reapply with her grades. I think that’s more sensible then putting a low tariff course she doesn’t want to go to on as insurance.

NotDonna · 18/12/2022 10:45

I agree with kitty that any insurance needs to be somewhere they actually want. Really want. It’s sometimes hard to find the right course on a lower tariff, it seems they’re often very similar. Even if you do find an insurance a grade or so lower, quite often the favoured uni then suggests they’ll reduce the offer if you firm - thus making the firm match the insurance anyway!
DD had an email from Bath on Fri (her fave) saying they’ll not be offering until after the deadline and that all offers will be made by end of April at the latest. That seems light years away! As you know she only applied to Bath, Loughborough and York. She’s not seen York, but likes the look of the course and will visit their offer holders in late Jan. She is hoping this will be her insurance (ABB with core maths, that she already has). She really struggled to find this insurance & it’s only because they drop a grade for core maths that makes it lower than her fave. And if Bath don’t offer Loughborough will become the new fave.

DinkyDaisy · 18/12/2022 12:34

My ds Bath offer might be because he ticked the defer box.

Usee8789754 · 18/12/2022 13:07

But if your firm and your insurance have the same grade requirements you might as well only have a firm. If you get the grades that’s where you’d have to go. If you don’t then it’s clearing.

I agree you need to be happy with the insurance of course but it’s very unusual not to find anywhere at all you’d go to with a slightly lower requirement. Unless of course the firm is already way below predictions.

KittyMcKitty · 18/12/2022 13:14

Not necessarily as your insurance (or indeed your firm) may or may not take lower grades for eg if your firm was UCL and your insurance QMUL with both asking AAA the chances are high QMUL may take you with a dropped grade. But if you’re predicted AAA for eg I would say it’s madness putting something at BBC as insurance! Also the lower tariff courses will most likely be in clearing.

Neversaygoodbye · 18/12/2022 14:15

DDs application is still with college but she assuming she gets the offers she wants (when it's finally submitted to UCAS) her firm and insurance will have the same grades. After a lot of discussion we agreed it's better to try for two she'd really want to go to. The potential insurance option also do a foundation year so that has factored into our decision.
